No Man's Sky - August 9, 2016

I feel like, as far as delays go, this really isn't that bad. My backlog is pretty huge right now so, on a personal level, this allows me to get through a few more before this one hits.

Still super stoked for this game and looking forward to tackling it with a few less games in the pile.

Well, Kthoku was right. They've been on fire lately with their rumors and leaks.

A couple months isn't a big deal but it is a little disappointing.

Disappointing, but August isn’t too bad, it could have been worse. I don’t think there are really any major games coming out in August I want anyways, so I don’t mind.

What the hell is wrong with people?

People bitched about uncharted 4 being delayed and then the game turned out to be stellar.

Well, I'm totally fine with this. He didn't wait until just before release to say this and I can change my plans and it actually works better for me the date he proposes. I'll have just come back from my wedding and will be able to more focus on it rather than wedding plans, gives me time to try to reach far harbor with my survival character on fallout and maybe play some other stuff on the backlog.

This is fine. I mostly was worried that 1. He'd wait forever to tell us (he waited til the end of the year to say it wasn't coming in 2015 like he originally claimed so I was not putting it past him). 2. That it would be delayed a really long time (worrisome and well, patience is not a virtue of mine and I've already waited 2-3 years. Been excited since I saw the first promo which was just a planet with some animals and a spaceship that took off into the sky. Didn't even really tell you what the game was about but I just got this feeling it was something to pay attention to). Ii wouldn't me mad if number 2 happened, just sad and impatient.

A little fluff between the ears never did any harm...

I dunno, 3 weeks is pretty darn close to release, and who knows when he was actually planning to say. They'd decided at least a couple weeks ago that they were delaying, since they had enough time to inform Gamestop and give them time to print out their planograms and ship them to stores. Who knows how long before that they actually knew? Seems exactly like what he did last year.
(Also congratulations on the upcoming wedding.)

It's pretty close to release, I'd call this waiting about as close to a release to announce a delay as you can get for a big release. Not to mention they were probably only forced to announce it now because Kotaku leaked it.

Oh, I agree. There's already a post on the subreddit for people who it is too late to cancel plans. It was kind of rude of them but honestly, I was really fearing he'd actually wait til E3 (I mean as much as they seem to wait last minute to say plans have changed it really didn't seem a far out thought). Or at best wait and give 2 weeks notice.

Well, anyways, we should thank Kotaku for forcing their hand before they managed to screw everyone who had made plans around the original date they planned for (though sadly it's too late for some, most of them seem to be handling it ok but I could understand if they were angry. I'd honestly think they would have reason to be as there is plenty of evidence they didn't just figure this out and kept quiet a bit). I do remember Jason saying on the subreddit that they have known weeks about this.

I just wonder how those blaming Kotaku for all this feel now that they've been vindicated.

The last minute call isn't appreciated, but it's a minor delay. As long as the game comes out in good shape and quality, there's plenty in the backlog to keep that hobby running.

Oh oh oh! I know! "There wasn't actually a planned delay before the article, they were planning to go into crunch time and finish it, but the Kotaku article gave them an out." *nod sagely*

I won't know until tomorrow if I can reschedule my days off to August.

Another e3 with an extended demo coming

wouldn't be surprised if gets delayed yet again and if it does we'll need to wait until july to see. seriously how did they not see this coming sooner? why wait until a month before release to delay it?

Sucks for those who were really looking forward to this, but honestly I'm glad. I have way too many games to catch up on, and this one looks too amazing to miss. I'm fine with waiting.

Yep and if Hello Games had released the game in a buggy/unpolished state there would be people lining up to crucify them, along with a barrage of "I called it" shitposts.

shut uuuuuuuuuuuuuuup
August is a pretty empty month otherwise I think, so I'm okay with this. Might give me a chance to play it at launch.

This isn't a major delay. Good that they want to and are able to release the game as cooked as possible.

Some pretty big warning signs are there for me:

  • Extremely ambitious concept
  • Peter Molyneux style pitchman
  • Small inexperienced studio
  • Troubled schedule (I know, pot kettle..)
That said I really hope it's everything everyone hopes it is. I would love for this to be legit and I would never root for it to fail. I'm just feeling reaaallly cautious.

After all, this was their only game (or series of games, I guess) before NMS:

Plus $60 indie game in the month of Deus Ex and Madden.

Bomba of the month.

Kotaku redeemed.

Now all the shit posting about Kotaku and Jason can stop.

As for the delay, if they aren't ready, they arent ready, these kind of decisions aren't taking lightly.

2) Comparing Murray to Molyneux is just messed up. We've seen NPCs, and herds, and behind-the-scenes of the procedural engine, and so on. And they make a point of only showing things they've made sure works and will be integrated into the game and not promising things beforehand. For example, that's why Sean originally said the game had no NPCs, because they were still working on the feature and it wasn't ready to be revealed
3) You make it sound like this is a team making their first game. The team did work on other titles and at other studios before forming their own (ie Burnout 3 Takedown)

So, I'm going to be doing an Army of Tentacles giveaway soon.

Should I bribe GAF members with naming Systems after them in No Man's Sky for reviews?

Well, I agree he's not Peter Molyneux, but you have to think back to how this has all unfolded. There was a long period of time when all we had were insaaane claims about the premise of the game and that original reveal trailer which was basically just footage of ships flying and stuff that had no real substance to it and could have even been a mockup.

For quite a while we had little to go on but promises and hype (I remember the celebratory concert for NMS at that PSX when we still had nothing firm on the game). We've since had more substantive gameplay demos, but my skepticism was forged in those early days.

Whether he's Molyneux depends entirely on if the game ultimately delivers. In the mean time, anyone playing frontman to a developer making the hard pitch on a hugely ambitious premise will make those comparisons spring to mind. To some degree, Molyneux has ruined the very idea of being the face of a dev and going around pitching ambitious sounding games

i dont think peter's thing isnt always what he shows but how he talks about his games. in that sense, i can totally see why people compare Murray to Molyneux personally.

in any case, we'll find out in less than 2 months. i still think the games gonna be solid, i dont even need it to be amazing to enjoy it tbh.

Murray programs.

Molyneux talks.

You think Deus Ex will do better than No Man's Sky? Haha, okay.

Well the last game in the series hit 2.2 million copies sold in the first year. As of 2016 there are 1.2 million people who own the Director's Cut on PC alone. It's a franchise, and if it's as good as Human Revolution, Mankind Divided has the potential to sell several million copies again. There is no guarantee that NMS is going to outsell that.

I dont know much about Molyneux, besides the usual. Did he actually do any of the programming/design of Godus and the Fables?

Odd to say Murray is a pitchman when he's also one of the main devs deep in the trenches making the game and its engine. He may be the face of the game, but he's also one of the hands crafting it

I don't know what Molyneux's exact role was. I always assumed he was a lead designer or something.

As for Murray, I don't doubt that he's involved in making the game, but if you are going all over on every talk show pitching the game then you are a pitch man.

You should have seen his first interviews - he could barely talk.

He´s gotten better at it, but I´m pretty sure he does it out of necessity not by choice.

He´s a designer/programmer first and foremost.

I was really riding on this game releasing in June. August 9th is doable I guess, but I will be a little busy that week.

Sure, Deus Ex seems to attract a wider audience since Human Revolution and I don't doubt Mankind Divided will do well, too, but I would be very surprised if NMS didn't do better on PC and PS4, unless it's a total bugfest or gets absolutely killed in reviews, which seems unlikely.

And, let's be honest, if your biggest "competition" is Deus Ex and Madden, I think you'll be fine -- there are much worse months to release in. (June and July obviously would have been fine, too.)
