[Digital Foundry] PlayStation 5/ Xbox Series X New GPU Spec Leak Analysis: 9.2TF vs 12TF?

Bullet Club

Testing data from AMD recently leaked giving us some hint of the technical make-up of the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X. So what has been revealed, how accurate is the leak likely to be and how could the new Sony and Microsoft console possibly compare? The leak looks genuine, but take any analysis with just a pinch of salt. Regardless - here's what we think.

If this turns into a $399 vs $499 situation this could be interesting. Then you have Lockhart if it does indeed come out. Interesting times.

This time let's pay more so we can have a better hardware. I don't want the same situation as with PS4 when playing AC Unity in 2014 (a year after the release of the console) we had fps issues.

*until the X came out of course.

Again, the MS of 2019 is not the same MS of 2013.

Yes of course. MS bricked themselves in 2013 because of the added cost of the mandatory Kinect. The Xbox One X was/is a great machine, where the Pro was only a moderate upgrade over the standard. I do hope these figures are false though. Hearing the 4.2TF PS4 Pro vs 6TF Xbox One X news, I would think Sony would push for a bigger power jump this time.

IDK if that was the PS4's issue but more of Ubi's lack of polish.

Nah it was definitely an issue with the consoles. I played Unity on my PC where it looked and ran very smoothly. The consoles weren't good enough for what they wanted to do, which is why they scaled it back with the later games.

Obviously these consoles will be limited in some ways, they are $400-$500 boxes designed to be affordable and economical, not high end computing platforms.

FFS, lets not forget that its not just about GPU performance. These new machines have way faster cpu's, bus, memory and data-storage subsytems.

Pro and One X also had very substantially increased GPU performance, but in the end the improvements elsewhere were far less significant and that resulted in only moderate improvement overall.

Ok.

I tried to track the source and the tests.

There is basically 4 chips that AMD tested in early August but nobody says what they are.
So people are assuming the 56 CU @ 1700Mhz is the Xbox One Serie X and the 36 CU @ 2000Mhz is the PS5.

The 56 CU @ 1700Mhz is suppose to be Xbox One Serie X because MS said it has twice the power of Xbox One X but nobody knows if it is TFs count or just overall performance (Navi delivery better performance per TFs than Vega).

For now I couldn't any evidence these chips are even related with next-gen consoles.

So before I click on this video and give it an undeserved view...does this have any actual NEW info or is it flabbergast bs with a bunch of "educated guesses" per usual?
Nothing new... just comments on the assumptions about the chips tested.

If true, this is disappointing. PS4 had a big advantage over Xbox One for it's entire lifetime due to being able to hit true 1080P, where Xbox One games mostly hit 900P. 9.2TF compared to 12F is a huge difference. I hope it is not true.
I would wait for concrete info from Sony but either way differences between multiplatform titles will be even smaller with both being 4K and checkerboard rendering will be even more refined

Yeah, I got it (AC:Unity, that is) off sale a year after launch and it was perfectly playable after all the patching - or at least about as buggy as you can expect from an average open-world game.

(still couldn't force myself to finish it as I was bored to tears)

Are they really making comparison with absolute fucking nothing official yet??

Why not? Everyone else is. Here, Era, gaming websites, Youtube etc. It's just speculation, right?

It's what you think and not deserving of a click.

"This video doesn't confirm my preexisting biases therefore it is worthless"

Did I do that right? Do I get a medal now?

Sounds like MS is going to burn a lot of cash if they want to sell the X at $499 but they’re used to losing money on XBox hardware so that’s normal.

Sony will probably again going to have an easier time selling the console to non ‘hardcore’ gamers and making a buck.

I have to say, if PS5 turns out like it has been laid out by DF here it will be pretty much 100% what I thought it would be.

"Independently confimed by several sources" is enough for me.

Arden 3584 SPs only meant 12TF of RDNA is guaranteed. Completely out of my prediction, but I didnt think they will go with PC tower in your living room.

If true, could that monster (Series X) be as much as $599? If the Lockhart really does turn out to be only around 4 TF (as per previous rumours), then maybe it'll be just priced at $350? Having both the cheapest and the most powerful console could be a good move by MS. If they can get together an impressive launch line up (and maybe even offer a mobile phone style monthly payment options for the consoles), then Sony would have reason to be seriously worried.

I would be very happy to see MS coming out swinging like this.

Its internal ASIC testing from AMD that leaked the other day. It is from June this year and contains info on few unreleased PC and notebook chips as well as Xbox and PS5.

Its been removed from github and twitter as of yesterday.

You didnt track much. This is what happens when people dont follow rumours posted for a year (coming from AMD data miners) and then parachute into this like you just did.

For the people criticising DF for clickbait, remember that there are many people that haven't been following the rumours very closely. I've only had a quick look through the other threads, so this was a nice little summary for me.

Richard seemed fairly confident about the PS5 specs, which lend the rumours much more credence in my eyes.

DF tends to not report unless they at least some sort of confirmation. So there has to be some credibility to this.

So as usual no one addressing that all Devs are saying they are close in spec with most of them also saying ps5 having a slight advantage.

Doesn't fit with the 9 + to 12 narrative I guess.

Because these are the newest leaks. If the other stuff were the newest leaks, they would be talking about that. Many already did when they were new.

Whether they turn out true or not is completely besides the point. This is how rumor mills work, it's been a thing for decades you shouldn't act surprised.

As usual. Only the narrative that you like better is credible lol. You guys sure seem worried although you keep claiming its bs. Yet feel the need to repeat the same thing in every thread 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

Lockhart is starting to make more sense.

It certainly does. There's an idea that the day one adopters are the hard core gamers who would be willing to splash the big cash to buy their console of choice, but I still think they need to release the Lockhart at the same time to avoid Playstation gaining a foothold. It would be weird to release the weaker console second, kind of a reverse of the Pro/X situation this gen. I imagine they will use the monster specs of the Series X to drum up hype, and then slip in details of the lockhart later.

He was also very confident the PS4 GPU was over-specced, and that the ESRAM was going to make all the difference. Just saying.
This is also true. TO be fair some Devs used the ESRAM to make pop the difference while others didn't at the start of last gen.
