This is a lie! the PS3 had 0.230 TFLOPs. The PS4 and 1.84 TFLOPs. So an 8 times increase in GPU performance and the same CPU in terms of performance.

The PS3 CELL processor - ignoring the main general purpose two way CPU core, and the seventh SPU for OS background tasks and eighth disabled SPU for yields - would give you 6 * 3.2Ghz * 2 vector units(64bit), each doing 4 single precision float(16bit) ops per clock = 6*3.2*2*4 = 153.6GFlop/s, or 0.1536TFs/s.

Added to the 0.192TFs/s (192GFlops/s ) of the RSX (according to the wiki) gives 0.345TFs/s of compute. Which is 5.3x the performance jump of PS3 → PS4 – a jumo at the time was considered modest, but balanced against a greater need for a larger jump in memory size and speed, and simplicity of unified memory HSA. So at the very minimum jump again, the PS5 would be no-less than 9.81TF/s. which generally agrees with your numbers. Although, I think the jump in compute will be more aggressive this time and the jump in memory size will be smaller, so I'm still expecting something fast; especiallyif they are spending 5x the money on CPU cooling. 3D dual wafer APU with 72CU downclocked to 16TFs/s would be nice.

Before this gen Microsoft shills, including their employees like Penello, were implying that they'd be ahead of Sony because they are the makers of DirectX. Then we learnt that in fact Xbox One devkits were behind PS4 devkits in terms of API. This was due to the need to remove the whole DRM scheme from the system, which damaged their workflow a lot. Later, they got better and matured. Does this mean they have an equal solution? It's hard to tell because this gen consoles have significant power differences. Also, if you're a first-party dev, you prefer the work environment (API) you're familiar with. It takes time to adjust or switch.

RT is new and APIs aren't mature yet, for sure. We're going to see a lot of progress in the applications of that tech in next gen. RT in games will be miles better a few years into the cycle, even if the hardware in consoles doesn't change. I heard it too (see my post about news from AMD) that the solutions might be different API-wise. Which one will be better? We'll see in games and I bet it won't be the first games of the generation to decide. With close to equal hardware, API and talent of devs will decide who has better looking games.

AMD is most comfortable with free/open source solutions, so it might be their fault if the DXR not implemented properly though. But Microsoft is a veteran in shit programming so expect the worse, always.

I'm so sick of people who think the improvement from the PS4 to the PS5 will be gigantic just because of RDNA2. Have they forgotten that every single generation has had massive improvements in GPU efficiency? RDNA2 is not some magical leap beyond other improvements. This is insanity.

I would like for one person who is thrilled about 9.2TF to explain what exactly makes the leap to RDNA2 so much better than that of the RSX in the PS3 to unified shaders in the PS4.

Agree, unified shaders improved performance a lot and MS of Sony still werent talking about it. IMO even 10TF RDNA2 is not much considering what most people want to see. We should still see some improvements but anything like PS2 vs PS3 generational leap (30x times faster GPU) in graphics fidelity is out of question. What they can do with 5-7x TFLOPS inscreae is just to run the same PS4 game at 4K 60fps with few additional details. RDNA2 GPU's will use interesting tricks (AI upscaling, VRS) so hopefully that will help to increase graphics fidelity a little bit more.

Many people were disappointed seeing godfall or halo infinite trailer because these games run at 4K 60fps. There's simply not much developers can do with such small GPU improvement and 4x resolution and 2x framerate increase compared to current 1080p 30fps games like uncharted 4. Graphics fidelity increase on next gen consoles will be even smaller than it was on PS4, because PS4 only run games with 2x resolution and still the same 30fps targert, so not all GPU resources were wasted into resolution and framerate increase alone and that will be the case now. I however expect huge texture quality increase thanks to SDD streaming speed. 4K textures are a given.

Also it's still the case that an RDNA2 GPUs performance can be customised, why would anyone think RDNA2s cu count and clock speed are locked, it makes no sense.

The 12 TF number is the only one confirmed by xbox. The others are still rumours, because they aren't confirmed yet. These other specs and numbers are what the sources from WC got. They are most likely true, but not yet confirmed.
