But it’s a strange move for them to do this now. Didn’t the Quest 2 also have a price increase recently?

Why do so many people want to buy a PS5? Why can they afford to raise the price at this point? Maybe Sony is doing something right as well because the demand it there.

I hate to break it to you but no country on this planet has capitalism now. It's mixed at best but we haven't had free markets since 1913 in the US.
The cost to produce things are staying the same, it's just currency is going bad. Your currency is losing purchasing power but manufacturing adjusted for inflation is mostly stable outside of supply issues.

Sony should charge the maximum price the market will bear. That's how pricing in a free market economy works. Else you either have a shortage due to underpricing (which is the case right now) or the business will do poorly due to unsold stock as a consequence of overcharging.

Not every product is sold with the same contribution margin? duh? Controllers are sold to bring profit. Plattforms, ie consoles, and VR-headsets probably too, are sold to create follow up sales. Entire different goal.
The Edge controller is probably produced for a few bucks more than the regular one, but gets a Premium Deluxe markup just because they can, the target audience are enthusiasts and masses wouldn't buy anyway. 299 for VR is possible as soon as you don't want to profit from hw, and accept selling at cost. probably, I have not yet seen a plausible BOM of the VR parts, but 299 seems possible in my guesstimate. Since Sony seems to be bean counting maybe they try to price it (much) higher which is together with the increase of the needed base hw just dumb and will again send VR out to drown again in shovelware games, if the depressing low number of announcements so far, is the actual support it will get at launch.

Impossible to tell the ramifications behind this beyond internet meltdowns. PS5s are selling as fast as they can make them and this price hike won't stop that. We won't know anything until supply catches up and by then fanboy rage will be elsewhere.

You can criticize them all you want, but this one is pretty clear cut and it's hard to understand what makes it so offensive. Demand is apparently there they think that they can get away with a 10% raise.
PS+ Premium/Deluxe sucks that pisses me off a lot more than a price raise for hardware I already have. MS went an entire year without any meaningful releases, where is the outrage?

If MS did it I would say it would be a tad worse, size of the company and war chest matter.
If MS only had the entire warchest Sony corp has, they would have likely not spent in the order of $70+ Billion in less than two years just to acquire two game publishers… and you keep dancing around this point. SIE has fat they could trim not to raise prices but a lot less than NS and it would mean less ability to compete against MS which has a lot more cash on hand. Then again you do not have to care about that and I get it

Except this kind of thing for consoles has never happened before that I can remember. The most recent example being the Meta VR price going up which also shocked everyone. Usually the price of a console goes down over time through the course of it's life, not jacking it up a few years in.
Playstation releases their games though unlike Xbox. If Playstation show it, 99% of the time they will release it. I know they would do a showcase regardless since they did one last year in September but it be wise to go all out to soften the blow of the price raise by showing more games than they normally would.

You know that currency forward contracts are a thing? Every time a company blames currency difference it is a scam, since you can lock in the exchange rate in advance.
Inflation would have at least been a bit more genuine, if not for taking the hit in the US because Xbox, and screwing the rest of the world because Sonyland.

We know this by the reduction of copper on the PS5 heatsink.
I don't know why the US price didn't increase (maybe to stay competitive price wise with Microsoft) but the raw materials is most likely the reason.
As for Microsoft. We know they have money to use as toilet paper, so I don't expect them to do the same.

They all affect the GPU market also, yet one is dropping in price and one has increased. We know why it's happening prices have increased across the board but let's not make out that Sony isn't without blame, they could eat those extra costs to save for their customers correct? Will Microsoft increase console prices? Will Nintendo? If they do only then will your argument hold any water.
