I completely thought Phil's goal was to consolidate and monopolize... I was not expecting gamepass to really damage the brand this much at all. At least not so soon.

I've said it for a long time, but I believe Phil Spencer was put in place to oversee the transition to 3rd party publishing, but gradually.
Everything that happened since he took over pointed towards this.

My guess would be the 10-year deal that Jim Ryan got out of the ABK acquisition.
It went horribly wrong real quick after the acquisition and now they're in full panic-mode. There isn't even any damage-control anymore.
It's also probably why Jim Ryan decided to retire. It was his mic-drop moment.
