Rise of the Triad is a success. What other old FPS should be revived?

BONUS QUESTION: Would you want the game to keep it's original style or would you prefer it to go in a more modern direction?

For me the answer is easy. One word: Hexen. It's funny, in the rpg scene I'm a bit burnt out on the fantasy setting and would prefer sci-fi but the opposite is true for fps. A return to a dark fantasy fps would be very welcome in my opinion. Now as much as I'd love a true to the original experience, I think Hexen would be incredible if it followed the borderlands format. Now before you roll your eyes, think about it, an open world similar to what you would find in elder scrolls but gothic and with the ability to quest with others. Seeing as how Hexen is already in the fantasy setting, more rpg style character upgrade mechanics would be a really good fit.

Have at it gaf.

Shadow Warrior.

Oh wait.

Real answer: I want another Duke Nukem game, but I want it to take a nod from the RoTT reboot and just focus on the core tenants; I'd prefer an entirely new game -- something that happens after DNF, but a total recall of DN3D-style gameplay, but contemporary where it's appropriate. I don't have any faith in Gearbox anymore to make this happen after A:CM, so I am a sad human being.

Hexen would be great, but you just know they'd try and Skyrim it up.

My vote goes to Blood.

THAT I would not want.

Blood would be nice too. It actually needs an enhanced version like DN3D and SW got, since there is no source port solution for it, making it a bit annoying to play on modern machines.

We already have Deus Ex and Thief revivals.

No One Lives Forever revival would be nice. There are barely any comedic FPSs along with Timesplitters and Borderlands, and that's about it.

you can find it on GOG.com perfectly playable on modern machines.

Yea a good source port of blood would be a nice start.

A sequel to XIII would be cool.

I would shit my pants. It's still so fresh now, is there any FPS out there that lets you deck your squad with all paintball guns and still be fun? I never played SWAT 4 with actual guns, until the Grand Hotel when the terrorists aren't effected by paintballs :(

Totally agreed. I really hope The Bureau paves the way for more games to be set in the 60s

I wouldn't call it perfectly. Aside from the low resolution, and having to run it through DOSBox rather than natively, it has all the old Build issues like no mouselook for more than one axis at a time.

Jace Hall tried to do exactly that for Blood, but Atari said no and stopped him from doing it. Gits.

Aww, that sucks.

System Shock series (goes without saying, really).

Immercenary (I haven't played it, but reading on HG101 made it sound like a really interesting game. Would love to see something similar out there today).

I hope they patch the performance of ROTT a bit, and add options to bind my additional mouse keys. That last one is a bit unforgivable imo.

Game itself is pretty great though, good price, fantastic speed.. just needs to get polished a bit more.

How do we know if ROTT was a success? Have the devs said as much?

Yes yes yes!! Such an unloved series; I'd love a modernisation of it.

Personally I'd vote for Dark Forces. Not Jedi Knight - I mean specifically Dark Forces. And maybe reboot Quake as well, as I didn't enjoy the direction that series went in.

Blood and No One Lives Forever. Since Blood is already out of the question of ever seeing a sequel or remake, my bet is on NOLF. But I guess the rights to that are lost in limbo and no publisher is willing to give a developer an appropriate budget for a game like that.

generally positive gaf impressions are my litmus test for whether a game is worth a damn or not.

it's also doing pretty well in other mainstream media.

XIII, which is not that old BTW, is getting the benefit of some rose tinted glasses. The only thing it had going for it was that it looked neat, and that's coming from someone who was really looking forward to it.

EDIT: And Hexen would be my choice.

You and I, we'd get along just fine. Would you be interested in buying a Monkey at all?

Doing a Hexen game like that would take out pretty much all elements that made it Hexen in the first place.

Kingpin? yes please - I'd take a sequel of that over pretty much anything bar NOLF

Yes; I wanted to call it "Convict", lol. Just like ROTT reboot the game should begin with the player getting beat up and tossed in a dumpster.

Blood and Hexen / Heretic. I ADORED Shadow Warrior when I was younger, and I'm excited about the remake that's coming out. I'm sure it'll be awesome, but I can't help but admit that I'm bummed there is no multiplayer, considering I had SO many good times on the original.

Also, keep your eyes peeled for Duke Reloaded considering Gearbox apparently retracted their "don't release it" statement. Interceptor worked on it for quite sometime, so I think there's a good chance it'll come out some day. Single player AND multiplayer. Pumped and hoping for the best! :D

Old FPS runner-ups:
Shogo
SIN
NOLF
