‘The Rings of Power’ Officially Renewed for Season 3, Plans Major Time Jump

The Hollywood Reporter can reveal the show is executing a major time jump going into the new episodes, with Sauron is now crafting the iconic One Ring. Here is the exclusive logline: “Jumping forward several years from the events of season 2, season 3 takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer all Middle-earth at last.”

Hate watching did it again!

I've a sneaking suspicion that this "war" is gonna be 99% off screen cause the only way amazon can save itself is to slash the budget for each ep. They are committed to 5 seasons though.

Have they shitcanned all the writers and replaced the showrunners? Though maybe after a few years of burning through hundreds of millions in $$$ these guys will finally learn their craft.

Haven't their ratings collapsed? The only reason they're still making this piece of shit is because the deal was for 5 seasons iirc and they want to keep the rights
Sounds like they are jumping from Season 2 to Season 5 lol. Shitty failures like this are probably why I have ads now.

You guys are practically paying for Hollywood's delusions, incompetence and pretentious bullshit, it's the reason why I cut all these services years ago, I simply refuse to give my hard earned money to watch 10 episodes of a couple of decent shows in a sea of absolute slop

They paid $1 billion and committed to 5 seasons, this show is going to be made no matter what because they lose more money from dropping it than from continuing to the bitter end

Hate watching got this renewed or they're contractually obligated to do more?
I believe part of the sweet sweet BILLION dollas they contracted with the Tolkien estate was like $400 mill for the rights to LOTR+appendicies and then 5 seasons of TV at $100 mill/season minimum or some shit.

So we are gonna get 5 seasons no matter what, but I expect the budgets to drop as they go into damage control mode.

Sad thing is they probably had full rights to "redo" the familiar LOTR story but went with the appendices WITHOUT all the detail from the Silmarillion, leading to the atrocity we got. Really looks like they have to dance around anything directly from the Silmarillion as well, so not just use the extra details, but actively avoid infringing on them and having to come up with alternative versions.

Without the rights to Silmarillion it's just a bad fan fiction and it's made worse by being peak woke at exactly the worst time to be woke

Good. Some things should remain sacred.

The last thing I'd ever want to see is Hollywood disrespecting the Silmarillion. They've done enough damage already.

No, they’ll just handle it like Game of Thrones Season 8 did, as Pitch Meeting perfectly summed up:

Writer: So there are thousands of the forces of our protagonists, but there’s a ton more of the zombies, like a whole wall, and it’ll change straight into them.
Producer: Oh wow, cool, it’ll be like watching World War Z!
Writer: Yeah, exactly like watching World War Z, only, you know, while wearing five pairs of sunglasses!
Producer: Wait, what?

I dunno. You give a religious guy like Mel Gibson the IP and let him combine his strong action, storytelling, and character chops with his faith and I think you'd get something Tolkien would be proud of and that the masses could still enjoy.

You need a subtle touch, but certainly not a pure secular interpretation. I think Mel can do that, versus something like Angel Studios where the jesus stuff is on front street.

Imagine Jim Caviezel as Beren and Margot Robie as Luthien directed by Mel. Getting chills just thinking about it!

A rare woke victory.
Not really. It's draining Amazon coffers on a show they are getting little return on. It's really digging in and making them suffer for having gone this way in the first place (the 'wokeness' of RoP is the least of it's issues, really). But if they do a time jump maybe they will kill off some of the most offending stories and zero in on the little that is going well for them.

No.

Just being Catholic wouldn't cut it. Nothing would.

Tolkien's Middle-earth is based on far more than Catholicism. It's inspired by England, English culture, English history, experiences of WW1, Northern European mythology, his long love with Edith and much more.

More importantly, this was a hobby and personal passion project for Tolkien. He never originally intended for it to be published, let alone it being adapted to screen. It's a stroke of luck we have it at all.

For these reasons I think it should be left alone. As already stated, enough damage has already been done.

Ask me about my wife's perfect butthole
Season 2 had some flashy elements to it that lured me under its spell early on but by the end I realized it was all a trap designed to get me to forever consoom poorly written content as I withered away in my cave.

not sure I understand the hate on RoP. I really enjoyed both seasons. I hope it makes it through Season 5 without sacrificing their original vision.
That's kind of the general consensus across the internet. Not sure what to tell you. If you enjoy it have fun.

I'm near certain they're obligated to do 5 seasons. Show is a financial black hole, luckily for them they have lots of money.

This is five seasons.

When the fifth season is announced you'll see endless bullshit about how it was "cancelled" and people celebrating its death, when it's been five seasons from the start.
Well, presumably the end ep would lead to Isildur and Elendil fighting Sauron and losing the One Ring so it would go right into the LOTR films, but with these jokers at the helm it will probably end with Galadriel arm wrestling all of them for the ring and then just tossing it into the river because "she is bound to NO MAN!".

Who signs a contract guaranteeing 5 seasons without even seeing a script for the first one?

IIRC there was a big bidding war for these portions of the Tolkien license, amazon 'won' with that offer. Amazon then took a lot of pitches for a show and somehow "were impressed" with these two nobodies that landed the most lavish and sought after show imaginable.

There was a bidding war between HBO, Netflix, and Amazon for the LOTR rights from the Tolkien Estate.

HBO wanted to do a modern remake of the movies as a mature Game of Thrones-style series with lots of sex and nudity.

Netflix wanted to do LOTR Avengers. A Strider series, a Gandalf series, and Sauron series, etc. all culminating in a remake of the movies as a Netflix series. The Estate was apparently horrified by that.

Amazon bid lower than the other two but gave Simon Tolkien and the Estate control over the series and committed to five seasons.

I think they said in an interview they got JJ Abrams to put in a good word for them :pie_thinking:
