A recent Reddit post about the upcoming super-resolution "Quality mode"

EDIT: Wo Long Comparison Video

A Chinese macOS app developer, known as CHUNQIAN on Reddit, is claiming that their Mac app "Console Link" can enhance the image quality of your PS5/Switch/Xbox games by implementing a custom DLSS-like solution, using Apple's MetalFX APIs among other Metal APIs for a custom rendering solution. You just need a capture card. For instance, if you have a capture card like the Elgato 4KX capable of 4K60 output, the Console Link app can upscale the output to 5K60, or even 6K60 according to the developer's Reddit posts.

For people who own a Mac and a PS5 then, the Mac becomes the best way to display their PS5 games. The developer claims that the app adds zero latency, so the input latency is essentially that of your capture card.

I have not tried this app yet as I don't own a low-latency capture card. I am just putting it out there to see if someone else has tried it or wants to. It would be pretty insane if with the right capture card and cables you could output PS5 games at close to 5K60 on an Apple Studio Display.

Has anyone tried this? Would love to hear about the results.

Devices could just take your hdmi output run it to a box that upscale it to 4k then out to your tv.
Does this kind of thing have to be done inside the GPU?
TV’s could have the upscalllers built in. No longer need to pay for 4k Netflix. Just DLSS/XESS/FSR or whatever alphabet is new comes along.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
I know console folks really want DLSS but this is not it. He only said he’s apply a DLSS-like super res technology. Nothing about DLSS ray construction, frame gen, DLAA etc.

In fact I don’t think this is the exact same super res technology as DLSS

On a side note, the developer rip off Steam Link’s mobile app logo for his app logo 🤡

Fair enough; if a mod wants to update the thread title to say "Add Upscaling" instead of "Add DLSS" I think that makes sense.

The real question for me though is, does it actually work? Did this guy really just develop an app that (for people who already own a PS5 and a Mac) upscales to higher specs than Sony's own PSSR? I would love to see more IQ comparisons across various game with this app.

Another thing is that I've tried to output the PS5 to the Studio Display before and I wasn't even able to get more than a 1080p signal. I think 4K is possible with the right signal converter but I didn't want to put any more money into it. Now with this you can use the Studio Display to play in 5K? That would be awesome.

Don't worry, DF will have 800% zooms at 10% speed by the end of the week.

For the console gamer who doesn't own a TV? I'm not sure why I would route my console through a capture card to a Mac.
Suppose you are someone like me who has a PS5 setup near their Apple Studio Display. This app's upscaling can target the display native 5K resolution, making it the best way to display your game (assuming it works of course). Well my ASD just went from a screen that is hard to even use with the PS5 to the best screen for my PS5. Secondly, if the upscaling is better than PSSR at even at the 4K60 target, you could output go PS5 -> CC -> Mac -> TV through HDMI (as far as I know HDMI adds no input lag), and you would get better IQ. I would love to see comparisons on this. It works with the Switch too so you could output your Switch to your Mac if you are traveling with both.
Can someone explain to me how we went from beeing nit picky af by pixel counting to celebrating fake frames with all of its drawbacks?
This is not fake frames aka DLSS3 frame generation. I shouldn't have put DLSS in the title. As far as I know this app does not try to change the frame rate of your game at all via motion smoothing or anything like that, it just supports 60/120fps outputs and improves the IQ using Metal upscaling.

EDIT: Dev made a comparison video for the quality mode.
