Wonder if SF6 will ever get to SFV numbers.
It should eventually. CBA to find the launch aligned figures so I'll be quoting a dude from reddit who did the work for me:

It took SFV 3 years to sell 3 million, 1.4 million of which were in roughly the first three months.

SF6 has sold about 4.5 million copies in a year and a half since its release (from this thread's article), hit 1 million in its first week, and two million in just over a month.

Gematsu's search box is free.

Wrong. It released simultaneously on both PS4 and PC on February 2016. Even so SF6 is still tracking considerably ahead though as the comment I've quoted says.

So, the guy doing the track miss a little of context there.

SFV release on PS4 and PC, while SF6 release on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X and PC.

By the popularity alone SF6 should be very far ahead of SFV.

He didn't though. SF5 took four years to break 4 million copies sold. SF6 is selling a lot faster even accounting for the multi-platform release (4.5 million copies in a year and a half).

Of course he did my friend. He forgot to mention the list of consoles the two games release.

This is an important piece of context. How can you put sales numbers while not mention the consoles the game release?

Still my take, but SF6 should be very ahead of sales in comparison with SFV.

But the point is that it's already way ahead of SF5 launch aligned, and it should outsell it especially once the base game receives deep discounts like SF5 did in its lifecycle. Also, I expect a release for Switch 2 down the road, so SF6 sales will have a long tail (def longer than SF5).

Street Fighter is such a famous franchise yet it just doesn't sell. It's games sell a bit worse than Kirby games.

Capcom doing what Capcom does.

That DD2 drop off though. A rare miss. A game that had a crapload of critical and sales potential, subsequently squandered by one of the worst launches in recent memory and a product that was rushed out to beat the end of the financial year. It'll be lucky to do 6m lifetime.

Love how this gives us so much insight into how gaming has changed over the years and how game franchises can get more popular over time if you cultivate them.

So many publishers give up on franchises too early. Look at Devil May Cry, that's insane. Monster Hunter is another great example.

Note to publishers: Build out your franchises...

SF5 sales were boosted by Capcom sneakily counting the Champion upgrades as separate sales. There is no way SF5 on its own sold 7 million. The numbers are way boosted by various DLC edition upgrades. You will notice how its first year sales were extremely modest. Something like only a million in its first year.

DD2 is so fucking good I went back to it like 2 days ago and couldn't stop playing until a good few hours in. Its also the best looking game this gen, imo. Shame it was released like it is, and the chances of any new DD content are slim.

This is what happens when you patiently nurture your properties over several decades.

There’s so much good will towards Capcom, apart from a bit of a rough patch in the late 00s (as with a lot of Japan) they’ve been consistently great since the 80s

Pretty damn sales for most of them, kudos to RE4R to pull that number.
Not really impressed with SF6 numbers though, seems mid for a franchise this big and that has alot of plataforms.

Street Fighter 6 seems to lack innovation compared to its predecessor. They need to introduce something fresh, perhaps new graphics, to compete with Tekken's visuals.

SF 6 looks good enough. I don't think visuals are lacking. It's also probably the most complete package a fighting game has ever released as well. The full single player mode honestly feels like a pretty great starting point for people completely new to fighting games, even if the story is kinda goofy. The traditional attitude of expecting new players to either hop in training mode or get wrecked online has always seemed super isolating for the genre and I think Capcom could have done more to market SF 6 as welcoming.

On the actual fighting game side SF 6 feels more robust to me? I know everyone has their feelings on the drive system but going back to 5 really threw me off. I forgot just how basic the move sets in 5 were and how basic the characters felt. I swear the SF 6 roster have like twice as many special moves and even those special moves have a lot more variety (Built in follow ups, variations, etc). I was never really a fan of any of the v-trigger stuff either so I kind of welcome SF 6's return to a solid fundamental package instead of trying some off the wall stuff.

Launch aligned already is. So pretty likely yes.

SF6 fixed many issues SFV had and added on top many great innovations for the series and the genre. Some of them:
  • Super long open world single player story mode to develop the lore and background of the characters
  • Cool 3D lobby for the online matches (optional, there's the traditional menu based too) with seasonal events, tournaments and other stuff
  • Character editor where you unlock and customize the character's appearance and moves to use it in these two modes
  • Arcade cabinets to play retro games of the company in-game
  • State of the art netcode
  • Tons of QoL and big or minor innovations or improvements in different (often new) features, settings or game modes like the way more complete training mode
  • Many unlockables types distributed across the different game modes and also in new battle pass-like monthly unlockable stuff
  • Many new and improved newbie/unskilled player friendly ways to learn and improve in the game, from different tutorial types, tutorial/practice in the story mode or even a simplified control method that is actually balanced enough to be compatible with the traditional system in tournaments or playing online
On the actual fighting game side SF 6 feels more robust to me?
Yes, it's way more complete and robust in all areas. Specially considering how both were (as SF6 is now) around half a year after launch.

The World Tour mode is bollocks even if it is not compared directly to Alpha 3's version. You have 2 mini cities and a bunch of hub areas to traverse with Temu avatar. If the fighting was not so painfully slow and dull the special battle mode would be awesome with how in-depth the options are. Playable arcade cabinets online are cooler than the game itself as it is.

Capcom games have legs as always, so I expect Capcom to not ditch Dragon's Dogma IP as it is ranked #32 and most of the game above it release a few years prior besides MH Rise/Sunbreak, Street Fighter 6, and RE4 Remake. They should have given it more time in the oven, but I hope a beefy DLC comes to fix things like the lacking enemy variety (missing many monster from the original), gear progression, difficulty, and give more skills to the vocations.

Great work Capcom. Can't believe the evergreen tatic work for someone else besides Nintendo.

It solved the issue of no single player games but new IPs are still hard to championed/greenlight.

New AAA IPs with the rising cost and it not being somehow live service can't it.

Maybe AI can do something.

SF6 has animations that are miles ahead of the competition, what they need is way more characters, hopefully SSF6 remedies this.

Square Enix should learn one or two things from Capcom. Not milk the shit out of one franchise and cut a remake into 3 games and expect it to move millions 🤣

My personal problem with Street Fighter 6 is how he is similar to Street Fighter 3. Capcom got obsessed with that viral video of Ken vs Chun-li 'endless' parry on Street Fighter Third strike and use that as a base for SF6.

Trying to replace Ryu as a main character, using 'art' instead of 'super', the imo annoying 'parry' system with I'm not particulary fan, not to mention a loads of annoying new characters.

I played the demo on both PS4 and PS5 and I find terrible to play.

But I must disagree about the 'new graphics' you mention. I think Capcom really did the correct job with the graphics. Their new engine suits perfect for Street Fighter.

Again, glad some folks like SF6, but I not. I prefer skip another SF generation or move on to Tekken 8.

It looks awkward like putting realistic textures on characters with stylized proportions. The stages and relative image quality given poor performance are also embarrassing when a small budget fighting game like Fighting EX Layer looks like this on dated hardware:

Maybe is a missmatch on the art direction, but again at launch the game really did put the engine at good use.

Resident Evil 5 just about holding onto the top selling spot for RE. I give it a few more months for RE2R to surpass it.
