Chibi-Robo Director Comments on Future of the Series

In a recent interview, Chibi-Robo director Kenichi Nishi comments about the future of the Chibi-Robo series including the possibility of a sequel.

Chibi-Robo director Kenichi Nishi shed some light about the series and its future in a new interview at Time Extension.

Many of game's original staff no longer work at Skip Ltd, which is the development studio behind the Chibi-Robo series. During development of the original GameCube entry, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto served as producer and helped keep the project alive until the full launch. Various sequels would spawn on Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS, but the series did not capture adequate sales and commercial success to continue after the release of Chibi-Robo: Zip Lash in 2015. Since then, various developers from Skip moved on to pursue other ventures in the gaming industry.

Kenichi Nishi founded Skip, but he was working on a separate project for quite some time during his tenure at the company. Most of the staff have moved on to other companies in the gaming industry, but some remaining staff is still working directly with him. Nishi's relationship with former employees is amicable, and he still sees some of them sporadically. The developer believes the staff wanted to pursue work and opportunities outside of Skip, leading to many of the original Chibi-Robo developers leaving together.

Nishi admits that he doesn't know if Chibi-Robo will ever return with a new game. However, Nishi is interested in making a sequel if the timing and opportunity is right. The developer continues to be fascinated with the Chibi-Robo character to this day, but there's nothing currently in the works for the Chibi-Robo series. For the foreseeable future, Chibi-Robo appears to be a dormant Nintendo series.

It is so surprising that a spin off game that had nothing to do with the original Chibi Robo didn't sell well?

The whole reason Chibi Robo was beloved is how unique the entire game is, turning that into a generic platformer is the worst thing you could do...

At this point I would settle for a remake/remaster of the first game, at least others would get a chance to experience why many people loved the game.

Zip Lash was a good game. 60fps would have made it better, though.
Problem is, these are low-budget, low-profile IPs that easily get overlooked. It's always amazing how people rant there's nothing to play on Nintendo systems, yet insist on ignoring smaller games like these that while not incredible, are always solid and fun.

The original GameCube game was fun though. It’s the 3DS game that was yet another example of Nintendo’s fans asking for one thing and Nintendo giving them something else because Nintendo sometimes incorrectly thinks it understands what its fans want more than the fans themselves.

I don't understand why either of you read the title of the thread, didn't care what it was about, still clicked on it and felt compelled to post this. You don't actually have to comment on everything, ya know.

Chibi-Robo is fantastic, it's a shame that we never got a true sequel with similar gameplay to the original. All these weird spin-off games never captured why people liked the original in the first place.

It's one of my fave series i loved the aesthetic of the sandersons house, the sequel on DS was even more fun just a shame they kind of didn't know what to do with it after the DS. I'd gladly take the GC original & the DS one remastered as that one never left japan.

Pretty depressing article. Chibi-Robo was a fantastic series. To everyone who says they don’t care or haven’t heard of it before you should definitely check it out. It was something different during a time when we took that for granted.

We deserve more Chibi-Robo and games like it.
