Decades ago, before some of you were ever born we use to have ring tones. Basically annoying song clips that would play when your phone rang.

Now adays my phone stays on silent.
In fact I feel like a lot of people keep their phone on silent. The only time I ever hear a phone go off now is on tv shows.

Why is that? What changed? I can be out with groups of people and no one even has an audible text alert.

No, I have it on and like switching ringtones. Unfortunately unless it's my (older) relatives calling it's usually some scammer and my call detection software wasn't successful in blocking it.

I have my phone on silent most of the times. I just get a severe headache these days from the phone ringing, app notifications, text messages and all the other bullshit that comes from owning a phone in this day and age. I just want silence in my life.

The first thing I did when I got my first smartphone was mute everything. I have a big intolerance to sound having been on certain addictive meds for 15 years, though. When I shop I wear headphones blasting white noise typically. I just cannot stand hearing ignorant people talk to each other.

I use dnd settings to silence texts at night but otherwise I can't silence it due to my job. On the flip side I don't get calls or texts very often.

I hate wearing restrictive clothes/accessories (ties, necklaces, bracelets) so a smart watch or earbuds are out of the question.

I use a ringtone. I don’t know how people can use their phone in silent.

I’m not glued to my phone as much everyone else. I can’t always feel it vibrating. Even my watch I don’t always notice it vibrating or ringing.

Ringtone on max volume. I’ve missed too many calls not noticing vibrate. And there’s no confusion when you have to stop a conversation to take a call. And it’s a great power play ignoring a call when talking to somebody.

Both me and my wife have to keep our ringers on especially when we are on call. We prefer getting calls on our phones than having to have pagers like we had a few years ago.

I'm a heavy sleeper but she isn't so if I'm on call and my phone rings I usually don't get up right away and she has to wake me.

I think phonecalls in general are out of vogue. People WhatsApp more than call for personal use and - for unfathomable reasons, imo - people mostly want to do video calls for work/business.

I actually miss voice calls, I hate video calls and if someone's sending voice notes through WhatsApp I wonder why it isn't just a phone call.

There are times when I want my phone to be louder - usually when I'm expecting something I don't want to miss.

I love having the quick switch on iPhone. A quick swap without even looking at the phone is very handy.

But to answer the question, it's usually on vibrate.

Ever since I got a smartband, my phone is almost perennially on silent.
Few things are more obnoxious and embarrassing than Gen Xers using full-blast popular songs as ringtones. One thing that I absolutely hate about my father is that he always used loud ringtones on his cellphones.
You get so many notifications in a day in these times, I don’t know how anyone can keep their sanity if they don’t silent their phone. The world is noisy enough as it is.

iPhone and Android stock ringtones are terrible and most people never seem to change theirs from the default.
Tech's in a dark place when a 20 year old cellphone ad feels like it's from the future where people have smaller phones with better ringtones.
It's pretty funny how people love to customize the cases on their phones or even system wallpapers, but never change their ringtones. I often hear (mostly sms) ringtones in public places and they're always the default ones, no matter if it's an Apple or Android device. Maybe they don't know how to download new ringtones and make the change?

Same. It's rare.

Loud tones are an annoying noise otherwise.

Mine's on vibrate, but it might as well be silent because I never feel it vibrate unless I'm actually using it.

I've also grown to ignore my smartwatch vibrate.

I use some generic ringtone, my coworkers as well. I'm not glued 24/7 to my phone and I don't want to miss any calls.

There was a time I used vibrations exclusively but the issue of "phantom vibration syndrome" got so annoying that I had to go back to ringtones.
