Elden Ring Nightreign beta test scalpers reckon you'll pay £400 for a free network test code

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Elden Ring Nightreign network test codes haven't even been distributed yet, but a number of scalpers are trying their luck and listing their free, currently non-existent codes for hundreds of pounds on auction sites.

Whilst eBay has reportedly delisted some egregious auctions, you don't have to look very hard to find listings with Buy it Now prices of £150, £200, and even £400.

Although those lucky enough to have been selected don't yet have their codes to hand, scalpers are sharing screenshots of their FromSoftware email as "evidence" with promises that the code will be "emailed directly" when they're distributed on 11th February.

I didn’t get in to play the ER stress test, but I got the Overture book. Overture is basically a Japanese fan guide about the stress test. Sounds crazy. I definitely believe this is happening and someone out there is going to fork over hundreds of dollars to get in.

I’m kinda starting to despise the modern world in many ways. Scalpers scalping literally everything, ads being shoved down your throat on every single website, etc…

I remember getting an Elden Ring Beta code and putting it on eBay because I was on vacation expecting to get 20 bucks or so... Ended up with over 200.
People are crazy....

Not sure you can “scalp” something that was never for sale in the first place.

Anyway, I see a few on eBay for $25.

Don't worry. People will. Look at the people paying thousands for a 5090. Look at the people that paid a thousand for a XSX or PS5. People will 100% pay $400 for a limited beta of a From game.

lol, that’s not scalping. Thats your own personal al definition of the term.
I can see why it would be classed as scalping.

Scalping is intentionally leveraging high demand and short supply to make profit above and beyond retail price, right? If someone's sole intention was to sign up for the beta only to sell for the sorts of money some are attempting to sell for, I wouldn't disagree that it is scalping. Not particularly good scalping mind you in sense that the demand isn't that high, but they still set out to deprive legitimate suckers customers for their own personal gain.

Interestingly enough, he said in the signup thread that he had zero interest in this.
Basically this, I was excited at beginning but this seems to me this more of battle Royal mode.

The thing I like about Elden Ring was build variety and taking my time exploring at my own pace but in Nightreign it seems you need to rush to find as many gears as you can before fire wall close in and beat the boss.

Couldn't agree more.

Just want to clarify for other people here: This is not a pvp battle royale game.

It is a co-op session-based experience. The only BR thing it has (allegedly) is a ring of fire that slowly shrinks, to potentially funnel you to the ending of the session.

For people who are curious about games that take an existing premise and make a whole new fun and different experience out of it, like Resident Evil Raid Mode, this is worth checking out.

That definition covers the entirety of retail business. And market trading, and art collecting, and dozens of other legitimate business practices.
Scalping is a legitimate business practice.
I guess what distinguishes it from regular buying and selling is the rapid turnaround and reliance on short term scarcity and time limited opportunities to drive up the price (ie FOMO) rather than general market trends.
Selling bottles of water at a supermarket for a $1 wouldn't be scalping even though the supermarket bought them for 25c - buying them for a $1 and selling them for $4 to people who fled the wild fires for example would be.

Fair enough, most scalping is legitimate. Scalping tickets specifically is illegal in my sate and a few others, though.

That water example would be price gouging of essentials during an emergency, which is illegal in most states. Weather or not it's really enforced I don't know.
