First Look At EA Motive’s Iron Man Will Be At This Year GDC

GDC has listed an upcoming presentation from Motive, which will feature Marvel’s Iron Man itself. Lead Technical Artist Martin Palko is Lead Technical Artist at SEED, an R&D studio in Electronic Arts that is providing support to Motive for Marvel’s Iron Man. His talk is titled Advanced Graphics Summit: Revolutionizing Texture Pipelines: EA’s Journey with Texture Sets, and it will be held this coming March 17.

GDC has provided this description of the presentation on their website:

“Art workflows have become increasingly complex, and many areas of the production pipeline have not kept pace. Textures are a prime example, where the days of a single image applied to geometry are well over. We now have intertwined surface maps packed in various channels of multiple textures, causing headaches for all involved.

EA Motive and SEED have decided to tackle this problem head-on and will present their learnings developing “Texture Sets” for Dead Space, Iron Man, and more. Texture Sets is a modern rethink of the texture pipeline, bundling sets of related textures together into a single asset, and taking a data-driven and extensible approach to texture authoring, processing, and sampling.”

Based on this description, we may also get a BTS for Motive’s 2023 remake of Dead Space as well. In fact, it’s more likely that we’ll get a more extensive post-mortem for that title, as it’s been two years since its release.

But primarily, given how long EA Motive has held back on showing us anything related to Marvel’s Iron Man, we assure Palko and EA themselves know that gamers are looking forward to seeing even just a small glance at this project.

So we do expect that we’ll see something, but since GDC is not E3, The Game Awards, a State of Play, etc., it isn’t likely to be something substantial. But then again, if we only get one screenshot that confirms that Robert Downey Junior’s likeness will be used in this game, that will already be a lot for fans.

With Marvel Rivals taking the de facto position of the Marvel franchise video game, EA Motive will have to live up to how well NetEase has catered to their players, on their own project. Maybe if we’re lucky enough, they’ll know where to find the proper inspiration.

Honestly? I just can't see how they can meke a great game out of Iron Man from the pure gameplay perspective. Iron Man was boring as sin in Avengers cuz he only can do so much - fly and shoot stuff, well, maybe also punch stuff too and all of this is hardly compelling outside of heavily scripted sequences and set pieces.

They should've just gone for X-Men instead.

Moment to moment gameplay of Anthem was amazing even solo. (shame about everything else)
If they can make a game that feels as good to play as Anthem with a decent story and good graphics we are in for a good time.

IronMans arsenal is basically limitless.

Saying IronMan can only shoot stuff and fly is incredibly reductive.
Most shooters all you can do is shoot stuff, you cant even fly?

And this is being made by EA Motive and SEED.......im excited, without being too debby downer, im kinda tired of seeing UE5 titles.....so something from a different engine and with SEED involved im looking forward to this.

Please melt my PC!!!!!

It sure was, as well as flying mechanics.

Not sure how flying will change stuff for a boring open world and repetitive combat after 20hrs. - it sure didn't for Spider-Man games.

I did say he can also punch stuff, right?:messenger_smirking:
Which is hardly the main stuff IM uses to deal with enemies.

In any event, if Motive can actually make a great game out of this licence, I'll be one of the first who will praise them for it, but I just can't see it happening and tbh, it's hardly the most compalling and interesting Marvel IP out there.

Like Superman, Ironman is a very difficult hero for a video game. Too OP and mostly airborne.

As for the story, there are good ones in the old comic books, but I don't expect any good in that department either.

You stated that IronMan can only shoot and fly(punch) as a negative.......when in most shooters characters can only shoot but shooters are still some of the most popular games on the market and can very easily be very very good games.
So adding more mechanics to an already great genre should be a positive.
Adding to that IronMan has a near unlimited arsenal of weapons which could make for unique gunplay.

P.S: This game has a boring open world with repetitive combat?
Did a preview drop that I missed?

Spider-Man is with Insomniac.
Wolverine is with Insomniac.
Black Panther is with Cliffhanger.
Captain America & BP is with SkyDance.
Guardians from Eidos was great but didnt sell well.
Avengers was live service nonsense.
Midnight Suns just came out and everyone ignored it.
Blade is with Arkane.

So what Marvel IP would you want them to do instead of IronMan one of the premiere Avengers who doesnt currently have a game already.
Thor? And hope people dont call it a God of War ripoff.
Captain Marvel? I actually would like an Aplha Flight game if only for Abigail Brand.
Scarlet Witch?
Ant-Man/Wasp?

After Camouflaj's Iron Man VR, where you actually move your hands the way Stark does in the movies to fly and attack, anything less than that will just be a step back.

Come on, just make it happen! Sony Interactive, reach out to Warner Bros. and DC and secure that license for Insomniac. Somebody bring back Superman for fucks sake. Damn!

Edit: It's been 18 years since a stand alone Superman game.

Look at all the 3D Iron Man games that were released so far and you'll understand my extreme scepticism. Sure, none of them were made by Motive level studios, but still, I just can't see a great game happening here, especially when you know that the team wanted to remake Dead Space 2 (you can tell by seeing how passionate they were while developing the first one), but EA pulled the plug and made them make this one instead. I'm sure they weren't happy and had plans for fixing Dead Space 3 as well.

Can you explain, how is it possible to make a huge AAA Iron Man game without open world? Hell, even Anthem size map at least.

I want them to make goddamn Dead Space 2 remake, just like they did the first one and made it even better. Or as I've said - X-Men.

Anyway, we're not going anywhere with this. I said what I thought about the idea of an Iron Man game, nothing more, nothing less. If you don't agree, fine, more power to you.

P.S. Avengers weren't as bad in terms of combat, it's just the core design of it and and GaaS nature killed it.

Wide-Linear like Combat Evolved.

We have no indication of whether the combat is repetitive or not and we have no idea the length of the game.

Its also pointless to compare previous generally movie licensed games to an actual fully developed game.
Look at licensed Spider-Man or Batman games vs the fully developed titles.

Older licensed games could in many cases be done in like one year from concept to completion.....even in the 360 days that was nowhere near enough time to get a game out the door.
