Gaf, why is Dark Souls 2 so bad?

I absolutely love bloodborne, I love it so much, its probably one of my favourite games ever by now. But I started Dark Souls 2 on PS4 the other day after getting it cheap from gamestop, played about 10 hours, and man its not good, I think I'm gonna quit. I mean, I don't know if sucks is exactly the right word for it, but its so fucking obtuse, frustrating, the combat is so dull and bullshit, drives me mad. Am I a peasant who doesn't understand good mechanics or what?

Here's 10 enemies to try and dodge that you could kill in two hits but you can't get them all before they get you isn't fun. Horde enemies just aren't fun like this.

It's not so bad, it's just hugely disappointing. If I had to give a quick answer I would say the changes to movement and the way the world and lore was handled. Both are worse than Dark Souls and Bloodborne by a significant margin.

The problem of course is intensified by the fact that the game attempts to follow in Dark Souls's footsteps, so the whole time you're thinking "why don't I just play Dark Souls instead?" Bloodborne has a lot of things that it doesn't do quite as well as Dark Souls I think, but the game as a whole seems different enough that it doesn't make me just want to play Dark Souls.

At the end of the day it's a game that's just not worth playing I think, but it's not bad.

Because it's not bad. The multiplayer is superior to any other game in the series. The DLC adds a lot of great content. Howver, the world doesn't fit together as well as DS1's does and some of the encounters aren't well crafted. Other than that its great.

Quickhint: It's not Bloodborne.

Don't play it like Bloodborne. I've felt kinda similar when playing Bloodborne for the first time after multiple hundred hours in the souls game.

I don't get the complaint. you get surrounded by a bunch of enemies in the very first area of Bloodborne. Learn to parry and block.

Get ADP up, go shieldless + light gear and then you'll get the closest to BB experience, even if combat won't be never as good as BB combat.

But yeah BB is a superior game so I understand how playing DsK2 it can be a hard experience.

This happens in Bloodborne too, also they will keep respawning cuz of bell ladies.

BB combat is more geared and better suited for those type of encounters.

Its a generation older bro

Going from Bloodborne to DS2 is jarring but there are things in DS2 to love if you stick with it

What section are you talking about OP?

You can't play ds2 like Bloodborne and expect to get very far. Try using a shield and/or taking it slower. You can't just rush into a bunch of enemies and dance around them.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
This isn't Shit Souls 1, get gud (I fucking HATE this term but feel the need to use it right now) and start using pebbles to pull enemies. Also, abuse the fact that you can pull groups of enemies and then go outside their aggro-range and then re-pull them one by one.

It's a great game. Hitboxes are bullshit though. The amount of times I dodged The Pursuer's curse stab and was just attached to it for no reason was so irritating.

It's not but it's probably really hard going back to DS2 after playing Bloodborne. I recently watched videos of it and the game looked like it was running in slow motion lol.

Yes, weak enemies, with no shields, with much faster attacks/animations.

Also that multiplayer shit can go fuck off. I'd rather deal with the hunters in bloodborne rather than the NPC player invasion I got in DS2.

Souls games like to pit you against multiple enemies, only none of them have combat built to handle multiple enemies but Bloodborne. 2 is the most egregious with it in my opinion. You have to pull enemies but that usually ends up feeling really silly and gamey.

This has been hashed out a lot on GAF, but it's the Souls game that is the most different from Bloodborne. It's much slower paced, especially in the first hours.

You have to approach it with a much more defensive mindset than BB, or go for a combat build built around stun locking/guard breaking. I recommend playing around with clubs or rapiers. In fact, my default melee build for Dark 2 characters is a shield and a rapier in the left hand and a club and a rapier in the right hand, and I switch up what's equipped based on the scenario.

It's a legit good game, it's just prioritizing different things than BB (and the other Souls games, really.)

There are a lot of super precise hit boxes in Dark 2, but the grab attacks (cursestab, hippo head bite) are usually egregiously awful. It's easier to notice the awful ones, but if you look for them, the precise ones are pretty amazing when you see one happen in a dramatic situation.

Those enemies are significantly better balanced by being weaker, less dumb stagger attacks, and the movement and attacks being faster.

Still annoyed the shit outta me. I played Bloodborne after hearing all the hype so I think I'm a bit tired of the series at this point. Finished DS2 the week it came out and thought it was good, but not as good.

Dark Souls 2 isn't bad, in fact its quite good. The problem is that it's still a significant step down from Demons, Dark 1, and Bloodborne and is riddled with a lot of bad ideas that shouldn't have made it into the final game.

I havent played DS2 so i cant comment on that but Bloodborne gives you enough tools to fight against horde enemies. Its clearly built with that in mind when the majority of the weapons extend for futher reach control and stagger. Offhand guns have sprays and flamethrowers as well.

"YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO RUSH IN"

*5 enemies ambush with one foot step forward*

My unironic favorite part of my SotFS playthrough was getting to some part in the Iron King DLC and every few steps there'd be a message that more or less said: "Yeah...there's an uh ambush ahead. Yeah...yeah I know there was one literally two feet ago and another a room before and there's probably going to be one right after this but uh....I uh I just wanted to be safe and let you know"

I loved DS1, but stopped playing DS2. I didn't like how the world was nonsensically connected. All of the boss encounters were against bipedal humanoids. Some of the mechanics were overly cheap comparatively etc.

I had fun with it, but it wasn't what I was hoping.

Play offline first and learn the system. It's very different than BB. Also, try choosing a starting class that better fits your playstyle. Try different ones out. Give it another shot.

Adaptability really makes the early stages of that game feel like hot garbage. Soul Memory is a poor answer to Twinks. The world layout is below par. Vitality didn't need to be seperated from Endurance.

Prepatch Shrine of Amana was an indicator of how different playstyles got shafted. You need(ed) ranged options or you were in for it.

It's not a bad game, it's just the weakest souls game.

I was playing offline. Said hunter was an NPC who spawned in a random area and chased me, and had magic attacks and swords attack that fucked me up.
