"Go to HECK, mom!", or what is a game you thought was edgy in your pre-teens but wasn't really all that edgy?

For me, it was Die Hard Trilogy. That beautiful M-rated logo. That R rated movie it was based around. My parents may have let me play MK games and Wolf3d/Doom, but I thought this was pretty epic when I was pre-teen. Now you look at it and it's such a soft mature game. I had to sneak this into the house on my PC, so I thought. My dad saw me playing it later and didn't care.

When I was very young I thought Samurai Shodown on Genesis was edgy bc of the blood and the way Charlotte shouts 'BASTARD!" (I think?) during one attack

I still remember the virgin at the EB GAMES refusing to sell this to me so I went and got my mommy from Kmart to come purchase it. I was standing there and he was rambling about how the game is rated M and this and that blah blah blah. I thought I was the cool kid amongst my friends and the game sucked buttermilk straight from the source.

At a certain point you weren't allowed to sell M-rated games to kids. I think it was more PS2 era though.

I remember I had to get my mom to come with me to buy Conkers Bad Fur Day. I guess there was a talking poop boss, and some furry bikini girls. It was really nothing.

Same with Leisure Suit Larry.

All this does is remind me of when I rented Turok and then after I got home my mom noticed the rating and took it away.

The whole thing was so preposterous with the N64 level dinosaurs I had to try not to laugh when I was 12

Mortal kombat was considered edgy. But I still played it when my mom was in Walmart.

Leisure suit Larry would be there too. But I have never played those.

Doom was edgy for the violence and devil. Still played it.

I felt like a criminal doing illegal stuff when I played Thrill Kill on the original Playstation. Because it was a controversial and unreleased game and I could get my hands on a burned copy.

I actually bought it with my own money. In my household, this would have been banned if my parents knew the content.

It's your own fault for buying an acclaim game.

I used to think this was basically a porn game at the time. I mean, you had to answer a quiz to access the game so it didn't help that assumption. It belonged to my friend's dad, and I remember we tried to get into it multiple times, and finally did. We were blown away about typing things for him to do, and him doing them, lol. Looked exactly like that bottom image at the time. So funny to me. I think I was about 8 or 9 years old? Lol.

I don't think my preteen years had edgy games. I guess the Atari 2600 porn games, but I didn't know anything about them until I was older.

Nah, all the M-rated games I played as a young boy were pretty "edgy" during its time.

- I laughed when you can run over pedestrians in GTA3. I was disappointed that Driver on PS1 didn't have that feature, so I was pleasantly surprised when GTA3 had it.

- Parents rented Conker's Bad Fur Day from Blockbuster, with the save-file right before the Sunflower lady getting plowed by the King Bee.

- Got in trouble in class drawing a squirrel soldier from Conker, saying all kinds of shit no kid from Grade 5 should be exposed to.

- South Park on N64 was fucking awesome.

This is the only game I've ever played where my dad legit got concerned and angry that I was becoming violent because of playing video games.

I was angry and violent because I was a disrespectful and sheltered little shit.

I mean... even as a 12yo, I already had multiple games that were banned or unrated in Germany 😅

like Manhunt for example, the guy who sold it to my grandpa (who bought it for me) literally committed a crime by importing and selling it...
so I don't think I ever was under the impression that games that aren't edgy are edgy, as my family was pretty chill about this stuff.
