Just watched the Xbox Developer Direct with all the new details for DOOM: THE DARK AGES...

First thought it looks INCREDIBLE!

Second thought... this is what Hexen (1995) and Painkiller (2004) would look like if made today. Both games deserve to be better remembered. They rode in on the coat tails of Doom but with a medieval twist, and now Doom is going back to the dark ages too.

If nothing else, perhaps the new DOOM might encourage some appreciation of these two under-appreciated gaming gems. Anyone else played them?

Yes it does, watch the Developer Direct bit when they talk about the weapons and you you get a nice shot of the stake gun impaling a baddie!

Hell yeah. I hope we get a true Heretic/Hexen sequel now that Microsoft owns both id and Activision, but this is the next best thing. (I can also see why using the Doom license would make better business sense.)

Painkiller maybe. But Doom The Dark Ages and Hexen are pretty different.

It's a long dormant IP but you never know... at least we can confirm Phil Spencer is a fan (or maybe he just wore it because of the big X in the middle!).

I don’t think Painkiller deserves to be mentioned. Outside of Black they’re all considered mediocre, and I don’t think any of them had a new idea to bring to the table.

Hexen, I’d love to see a third game done by the developers doing Doom. Dark Ages looks crazy good, and I’m so happy it’s not another shooter where I’ve got to be a damn acrobat. It’s definitely more my style.

I used to love painkiller, it's a game that caught me in my teens, and between the edgy touch and the metal music I thought it was awesome. I played it again recently and it's a simple, repetitive and mediocre game. It's not even close to the level of other shooters of the time or even older, and it doesn't deserve to be compared with Doom.

I LOVE Hexen but won't be getting my fix from 2025 Doom
