Hironobu Sakaguchi wants his next game to be a successor to Final Fantasy VI in a good way

“I’m currently working on a new project with the same team that worked on Fantasian Neo Dimension. It’s generally going to follow a similar style to my previous works, and it’ll be something that can be a successor to Final Fantasy VI in a good way. Our goal is to create something old but new at the same time. It’ll be part two of my farewell note.”

I feel like players don't really trust Sakaguchi anymore. Worse, many don't even know who he is. It's true that Fantasian isn't extraordinary, but if he goes back to basics, there's hope. We’re not asking him to innovate here, just to make something as good as FFVI—if not better (which won’t be easy).

I mean, that would be nice. But I’m not sure what to expect. Will it try to capture the tone? Pixel graphics? Turn based combat? All of the above?

They won't have the budget to make it triple A (or even AA). It will probably be similar to HD-2D or a diorama like Fantasian if they continue down this path.

I would welcome a bigger budget bigger scope game from Mystwalker. Heck work with MS to get Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon remastered on modern platforms.

If this is the Gooch's last game then it should be given all the funding it needs from whomever is publishing it.

Also just to add he's the GOAT.

What he achieved in that 10 year window in the infancy of industry, whilst switching from 2d cartidge games to disc based 3d games, bringing story telling, orchestra and cinema to video games in absolute bangers like FF1-10, Xenogears, Chrono Trigger etc is unparalleld imv.

A huge contribution and legacy that is perhaps not recognised as much as it should be in the modern industry.

My first FF was IV in 1992. An old friend recommended it to me because "it's just like AD&D, like they made D&D into a video game." I played FFIV and I hated it. Two years later I got talked into giving FFVI a chanced. I loved it. Three years later FFVII comes out. I loved it. FFVIII comes out. I loved it. FFIX comes out. Yeah, I can't deny I loved it, but I that was despite my thinking "After all the progress they made from VI on, why would they regress back to this?" It was probably around that time that I went back and played all of the OG FFs, I thru III on NESticle and V on ZSNES. And I really didn't care much for them. It took me a while to figure out, Sakaguchi invented FF and made the first five, and they just weren't my thing. To me FF kinda starts with VI, which is when he became an executive and had to pass the torch to Kitase and Itou. FFVI was the first 'weird' FF and they just kept getting weirder after that and that was my jam. Sakaguchi's post FF stuff like Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey left me cold. Meh.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

A game in the style of FFIX would be fantastic. It's his favorite game as well or at least that's what he's said.

Well, fuck. Making a game better than the best Final Fantasy (and maybe even the best JRPG) is quite an ambition. But I trust him more to be able to pull it off than current Square, tbh.

I hope he can get Yasumi Matsuno on his team.

Sakaguchi - Matsuno - Mitsuda making a HD 2D spiritual successor to Final Fantasy 6 would be a dream come true 🙏

Last Story was great too, it wasn't the most polished game but the combat system premise was incredible and a refined sequel/successor would have realized that potential. Between that and Xenoblade to me it had the better systems within a vaguely similar framework but Xenoblade won in sales.

Shame nobody has given him a half decent budget since then.
