How does a 7 year old title look better than new releases?

Red Dead Redemption 2 PC

With the new DLSS 4 release, I have really been putting this game through it's paces. I finally able to Crank all settings to ultra thanks to the DLSS 4 performance looking really close to Native. The visuals on this game are insane. I said it before but I will pit it against the best looking games and it just wins.
From the sheer scale, detail of environments, from the blizzard shows to the dusty towns. It's just crazy this game is still outdoing modem titles .

Is lack of innovation to blame? Modem titles should be running circles around a title made in 2018 but most do not even come close.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.

Cause it had a budget of $500M. Next question, OP.

I said recently that the AAA Dragon seems more like the AAA Horse. Whether it's RDR2, Arkham Knight, Uncharted 4, or even something like AC Unity or FF15, dev studios are having trouble achieving 8th gen results with 9th gen machinery. Whether that's raw textures fidelity, animation quality, world interactivity.

Both purely and relatively, current games are falling short. This despite more time and money being spent across the board.

It's not even my opinion, from the Insomniac leaks when of their own employees put it in writing in reference to Spider-Man 2.

"Is 3x the investment in Spider-Man 2 evident to anyone who plays the game?

Because about the only studio on the planet that can throw 1500 developers on a single game for 8 years and pay salaries large enough to attract best developers on the planet is called Rockstar

But, as much as I love RDR2, it has its share of flaws, specifically its extreme linearity in mission design.

Yeah I don’t know what’s going on, I’m seeing a huge downgrade in textures. If I go back and play MW2 from 2009 the environmental textures look fantastic compared to the latest call of duty which just looks flat in a lot of areas, sky boxes look worse than they used to in a lot of hames, lighting is more boring. I don’t get it.

it's not running on UE5... that's why. if it did, it would run at 720p upsampled to 1440p on current gen consoles.

Unreal Engine 5, and Lumen in particular, are fucking destroying modern videogame graphics

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I think it has less to do with activists or a lack of care and more to do with all the myriad filters and bullshit performance band-aids (TAA, et al) that have become so prominent in the last several years. There's a huge disconnect between art and tech, and it's fucking a lot of AAA games up.

Tell me you know absolutely nothing about game development, without telling me you know absolutely nothing about game development

Thread should've been closed the second it got made

Ever since PS4 visuals are not about tech but amount of manhours and money thrown at the problem. Uncharted 4 still miles more consistent than Indiana Jones. Forza Horizon reached its visual peak at 3 and just polishing the picture ever since.

And it’s totally fine. RDR2 will be surpassed by GTA VI, but mostly thanks to even bigger budget and dev time.

You sound very angry. Or scared. Or both maybe? I was once like you. But then a friend showed up , ready to help, to find out why, how i got here. And then, to start, the process of healing.

We all experience pain and suffering at some point in our lives, but it's important to know that self-healing is possible. Self-healing involves taking responsibility for our own well-being and actively working toward our own healing.
Before we can begin the process of self-healing, we must first identify the source of our pain. It's important to be honest with ourselves and explore the root causes of our suffering. This may involve deep introspection, reflecting on past experiences, and seeking the help of a therapist or counsellor. Once we've identified the source of our pain, we can then start working on addressing it.

The same way Rocksteady put out a game last year that looked worse than one they released a decade ago:

It's not the same people working in these studios. The good and talented people have been replaced with talentless activist DEI hires. There's been plenty of reports of veteran devs complaining about their newly hired colleagues, saying that they basically don't know how to do anything, can't handle criticism and take forever to do the simplest of tasks.

Money, Talent and Time. Most studios tend to have both of those requirements but R* is one of the exception that has all 3.

I said it in the other thread already.

Since 2019, however, hardware acceleration for real-time ray tracing has become standard on new commercial graphics cards, and graphics APIs have followed suit, allowing developers to use hybrid ray tracing and rasterization-based rendering in games and other real-time applications with a lesser hit to frame render times.

This shit technology brought graphics development to a halt.

Most games look like PS4 or PS4.5 games.

There are very few good looking modern titles.

RDR2's graphics were indeed ahead of its time. Unfortunately, as a game, it wasn't.
