Disney removes same-sex kiss from The Rise of Skywalker in Singapore

New film has first same-sex kiss in franchise’s history

Disney has removed a brief scene of two women kissing from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in Singapore.

The film features the first same-sex kiss in the franchise's history, and is shown in a flash when two women embrace among a crowd of characters.


Singapore's media regulatory body told the BBC that Disney cut the scene to avoid it receiving a higher age rating. Without the kiss, the film is rated PG-13 in Singapore.




"The applicant has omitted a brief scene, which under the film classification guidelines would require a higher rating," said a spokesperson from Infocomm Media Development Authority.


The kiss reportedly went uncensored in China, but was removed in the United Arab Emirates.

While I think this is an excuse to cover the real reason, I am more surprised that Disney decided to go full 100% Woke with Star Wars.

Man poor Lucas, didn't know that 3 movies would tarnish the brand. Granted the scene itself is brief but they have been doing stuff like this since the first of the new trilogy.

If they focus the camera on it and turn it into a big scene you'll probably call it pandering and complain about SJW's, etc. If they make it a small thing in the background it's a cheap way to add diversity.

Honestly, I didn't even think anything of the shot until I read posts about it online. It was just a brief moment of embrace in the big celebratory scene and didn't feel out of place or forced at all to me.

It's just that it was so throwaway and sort of random that you have to suspect Disney's motives a little bit, and their removing it for other markets basically confirms that they were just cynically trying to score some woke points in western markets.

I'm watching it on and off. Movie is too long, things keep happening too fast, and it feels like there's not really anything at stake, as Rey wasn't defeated not even once in VII and VIII.
I would recommend it just for those that want to watch it out of curiosity, because it is not even a "bad, but entertaining" movie.

I know this is going to be a spectacular train wreck as I’ve read all the spoilers, but I’m still gonna go watch the pew pews because my family is going and why the fuck not? I really enjoyed it. Forget what everyone else thinks, and just watch it. It’s enjoyable, got some great sequences, and was just fun.

Have you been watching the main Star Wars movies up until now? If so, it's probably better to see it to the conclusion.

I thought it was pretty enjoyable (outside a large portion of the first hour). Ultimately I'm tremendously disappointed in this whole new trilogy, but ROS at least left me with a better aftertaste than TLJ.

I say yay. It was entertaining. I don't think its the series high or anything, but it's more than worth the price of admission to see it on the big screen at least once.

Also, the kiss was so inconsequential, I bet removing it from the movie will draw more attention in these countries than just leaving it be.

Eh, not everything has to be a life and death decision about who I’m giving my money to and frankly $50 ain’t shit for me when it’s my mother in law’s birthday two days after the anniversary of her husband’s death (today). Sometimes you just say fuck it and go see the dumb new Star Wars, buy everyone overpriced junk food and then turn the brain off for a minute to escape reality, just like I watched that dumb infinity war movie with her husband in the theaters weeks before he died.

I don't think it was really a background thing but they were clearly quite front and center kissed for a few seconds. It was clearly a shot where they were the main thing to show than them being in the background.

That said, lesbians in movies is a funny thing nowadays. Back in the day most guys would've been drooling at a scene with women kissing each other, but now it's either stupid wokeness or a non-sexual sign of bravery. I don't know if I should be aroused or calling out the "woke progressive leftist liberals" or gently nodding my head at the sign of social progress without even a thought of arousal. Now that's a first world problem if anything!

There's no obvious reason for homosexuality to even exist in a made-up universe that is unlike ours in a thousand ways. Since the SW world is not like our own, it could very well be one where there is no such thing as homosexuality. To use just one example, two people in my family have autism. But does autism exist in the SW universe? I wouldn't expect it, or indeed want it, to be the case.

Not gonna lie, I'm worried about those two female characters. Sad that female characters have become a bad sign, but it's Woke Hollywood's fault.

Here's how you fix Star Wars: make it male again. Star Wars is at its heart a young male's fantasy. It came from the mind of a grown-up nerd who wanted to recreate the fun he had watching Flash Gordon serials, which probably skewed 90% male. When I was a kid, Star Wars mega-fans were always guys. Why do you think?

Star Wars is a male-fantasy story and universe that's tailor-made for the male mind. It couldn't have been created by a woman, in the same way that Wuthering Heights couldn't have been written by a man. Doesn't mean women can't enjoy SW. But you need a guy to be in charge of something like Star Wars. The name itself screams young boy fantasy world.

I don't want her to be playable because they would have to make her an action character like Link, when that's not who Zelda is in those games. She's a spiritual, calming, peaceful presence. A passive character. She's a princess, she's royalty, she's not a soldier or a fighter. Not every woman in video games has to be an action badass like freakin' Sarah Connor.
