Why the long case?

Should I go to a barber or stylist?
xskMCkA.png

I'm going to keep this short and sweet, since I think the last OT was too cluttered. The biggest difference between a barber and stylist is that one has a license for a straight razor and the other doesn't...for the most part. Forget about terms like "nape" or whatever. Bring pictures to your stylist or barber, that's the bottom line. And preferably one for every head angle. You don't want your stylist to ask if you want a disconnected fringe and have no answer. Also, consider the following: the longer your hairstyle is, the more suited it is for a stylist or salon.

It's up to your stylist to form your desired style to your head. It is important to take advice from someone who does this everyday. However don't lose sight of your dreams!

IMO, Pinterest sucks. I use Tumblr and Instagram.

Products and styling
Ask around here for your desired style. I once used a huge range of products, but now all my needs are solved by a hair dryer with a diffuser, Baxter matte clay, and some volumizing mousse. I forbid wet look products from my restroom p much, but obviously different strokes for different folks.

Edit:

I use this. Costs me about 18 euros a piece here in the Netherlands but very happy with it. Its a very thick, clay-like substance, becomes hard fast and handy if you want your hair to stay where it is. Your hair has to be really dry before you put it on or it'll become a mess. Just use a little bit or your hair will be so hard that it looks like you have a brick on your head.

I should probably just try girl GAF thread instead. I have hair down to my pecks now and I have no idea how to look after it, suppose I'll start with a trim at a salon then ask there how to treat it. Most days it looks terrible.

e. Also don't feel any shame in taking a picture in. Barbers typically want you to go out feeling happy and it will probably help them know how to cut your hair. My last one said that's a really good technique if you don't have the lingo to describe it well.

This thread will not be limited to short cuts, as I know there are a lot of people here with longer hair that can help!

yeah doesn't sound good at all.

My girlfriend used to cut my hair and since we broke up i have been in hair hell! I can never find someone that cuts it the same way or makes it look as good. Shit is frustrating.

I have quite long hair (not hippy length) and I want it cutting quite short for a change.

I didn't think of how to properly end this post when I started writing it.

Forming Cream is pretty good too.

Ohhhh I forgot about this stuff! Adding to the OP.

Thanks for the reminder.

Ahhh, ok.

Makes more sense for your description.

Might use the picture of the ASOS model for my next haircut. I always tell them to go short on the sides and get talked into keeping it a little longer. I have a long scar on the left side of my head, so this'll look interesting.

I feel I can be open and honest with you guys. I have no hair. It's not a cue ball, but it's peach fuzz at best.

:(

I've been using this stuff for 2-3 years and have been very happy with it. You guys should look at buying your hair products on eBay. A <3 oz jar of this crap at a store runs something like $18, but I can get it for half that on eBay.

Okay, some good stuff on short hair cuts OP, now let's get some long hair cuts in here.
I never use hair products because I hate the feel of it and having to wash it out (some products wash out really badly too), and fortunately my hair can when it's cut right look styled enough on its own without products.

Excellent OP. We've needed one for a long time.

People in salons are sometimes not licensed by the State and therefore can't use a straight razor. Only licensed Barbers are allowed to use straight razors at least here in the States.

tl;dr Always go to a Barber.

I'm a convert to barbers. Go in every couple of months and get it buzzed down to this. Will consider keeping this as the general cut when grey starts to really take over.

Have stopped using product - hair sticks up without it, anyway. Possibly as a legacy of a decade of wax abuse.

It just looks like short hair that's has some product in it then roughed up to give it that disheveled appearance to be honest.

I really want to get out of the habit of shaving mine, and actually have a hairstyle. Something somewhere between Mike Patton's slicked back hair and a subtle pompadour. I really do have the shittest hair though.

For the past couple years I've really had an identity crisis of what to do with my hair. I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do with my hair and when I did decide on a style I liked, I couldn't describe it very well.

I took pictures to every place I went and was like "Hey can you do this with my hair?" and they would say yes and then it would come out janky. I tried barbershops at first, but then started going to salons. Salons provided much better results for my hair as they would leave it looking excellent. I always preferred barbershops until just recently and I wish I could find one in the Rockville, MD area that would do my hair well. There is a special atmosphere about a barbershop that a salon just doesn't have for a guy.

What are the latest hypes?

Pretty easy to achieve if you're blonde, you still have to get a haircut for it.

Other hypes, I don't know, I'm not the expert. I just know the faux hawk was VERY popular a few years ago, had one myself actually, but it got tired quick. Maybe someone else has the latest on the popular haircuts right now.

I'm just a big believer in whatever makes you feel good, is the best. Be it faux hawk, be it long hair, whatever. If you feel good then it'll show.

Wish I could get a cool hairstyle but my wavy hair pretty much crushes my dreams. It's almost impossible to straighten and gels never worked as intended. Been getting a buzz cut for the past decade lol.

You just have to own that wavy hair

The moment you try do go against the style of your hair, is the moment you're going to fail. Of course with a buzzcut you cant go wrong, but I mean, if you want to grow it out, don't try to straighten it.

Well, to further clarify it's black wavy hair that kind of grows out of my head in every direction. The back curls up first and almost sticks straight out from my head. Thought about going to a stylist but really have no idea what my options are and how they'd look on me.
