Metaphor: ReFantazio and Sonic X Shadow Generations Are “Performing Better Than Expected” – Sega

Sega had a bumper 2024 with a long list of games that enjoyed both critical and commercial success, and the company has highlight two of them in particular for the continuously strong sales they have enjoyed.

Metaphor: ReFantazio and Sonic X Shadow Generations were among Sega’s last major releases of 2024, and both are enjoying steady commercial momentum. During a recent quarterly Q&A with investors, the company said both games “are performing better than expected”, allowing the company to offset at least some of its losses in projected revenue because of the cancellation of Football Manager 25.

Speaking specifically about the sales of Metaphor: ReFantazio, Sega said, “The recent number of units sold has been steadily increasing and is on pace to exceed our initial forecast. Those responses support our confidence about the title, and we believe we can expect the further sales by raising awareness of the title in the future. We will continue the effort to increase repeat sales while always closely monitor the appropriate price levels.”

Metaphor: ReFantazio sold over 1 million units on the day of its release, becoming Atlus’ fastest-selling game of all time. Sonic X Shadow Generations matched that achievement, and as of January, had hit 2 million units sold.

I expected Metaphor to do well. The Persona 6 itch is very real, and I think the idea of a “fantasy Persona” game sold it to a lot of people.

I expected Metaphor to do well because they promoted it well, maybe a bit too well since ultimately I felt the game was quite overrated and not as good as P5R. As for Sonic Generations, I was a very solid game back when it released in the PS360 era, so I'm not surprised that a remaster with added content (Shadow) would sell well especially when it launched at a reduced price.

Sonic X Shadow Generations is so good. The Shadow levels really feel like the future for Sonic, and after the success of Sonic Frontiers I am finally hopeful for the future of the franchise. The movie must have helped somewhat too.

I need to pick this one up again, I lost a bit of steam and time with it Other than the busy interface, I thought it was the second best RPG of the year behind FF7. For anyone who finished the game, is it something they can continue like Persona? with more installments? is it a new tentpole franchise?

I clocked about 40 hours into ReFantazio and was really excited for it. I played for a few days and loved my time with it

Not sure why I stopped. Probably because I got distracted by another game (FOMO strikes again)

I really need to join that "52 games in 1 year" thread to actually finish what I buy

edit:

Same for Sonic 🤷‍♂️

I’m glad Metaphor selling well, I liked the game even if most people GAF dont feel same way.
I do like the game as well! The only real criticism is that the OST isn't as strong as I expected it to be. I think it's Shoji Meguro's weakest work. Yeah, the battle theme with the monk spitting out lines is cool but that's about it.

Sonic Generation, unlike the recent Sonic trash games, was a decent back in time, so no surprises here. Not to mention the movie is giving this game a boost in sales.

And Atlus is being Atlus. Probably the only decent decision SEGA ever made.

Still haven't bought Metaphor. I played the 5 hours demo and really liked it, but I just don't have the timeslot for yet another 100+ hour game.

Honestly not surprising.

While I don't particulary see any reason to praise Sonic Generations, the game is on constant discount. I'm not joking, almost every Sonic game keeps being sold on discount frequently, specially Sonic Frontiers and Sonic Superstar. That old Team Sonic Racing? Aways on discount.

Metaphor on the other hand probably deserve it, as the quality of Atlus games are impecable.

I would imagine we will see both P3 Remake and Metaphor on Switch 2. It would be very strange for SEGA not to launch the games there.

I can also see the new Like a Dragon games making it there.
I purposely DIDN'T buy P3 Reload and Metaphor re:Fantazio because I didn't want to double dip on the obvious Switch 2 release.
