Need For Speed Isn't Dead, EA Says. It's Just On Hold

Need for Speed and Burnout developer Criterion is now entirely focused on developing EA's next Battlefield game, the publisher has told Eurogamer - but there are still plans for the studio to return to its racing roots at some point in the future.

Today, it sounds like what's next for Need for Speed is still some way off - even if there's a commitment to the series long-term.

"The Need for Speed team at Criterion are joining their colleagues working on Battlefield," Zampella said in a statement to Eurogamer today. "As a company, it was important to us to take the last year to listen to our Need for Speed community and use their feedback to create content for Unbound.

"With an increased understanding of what our players want in a Need for Speed experience, we plan to bring the franchise back in new and interesting ways."

Once an annual stalwart of EA's release schedule, the Need for Speed series now looks set for an extended break, with no new game seemingly in active development.

With no new title waiting in the wings for 2025, Need for Speed will be paused for the longest time between releases since the series first began, all the way back in 1994.

Probably an unpopular opinion but they need to give the game back to 'Black Box' (if they still exist).
Imo they made the best NFS games, inclding imo the best in Most Wanted 2005 version.

Id like Burnout 4 100% next gen. We didnt have one like Burnout 3 Takedown on Ps3 or Ps4. Its about time we got one.

It might as well be dead to me with that piece of shit launcher as a gatekeeper

There are huge discounts on plenty of modern NFS games, but I'd rather go without than be forced into using Origin.

Shame, too. I'm sure an arcade style racing game would be good fun at 180fps.

Any other arcade racers with high hz support that don't force you into an awful launcher?

Unbound's camera options were far too restrictive. I like a very high camera and pulled back pretty far.
For me, the game was unplayable with what they provided.

i fucking love need for speed, its like call of duty but with cars. Basically fastfood of videeogames.

sad to see its on ice. nothing scratches that itch just like NFS even though i have many many more hours on forza horizon

I keep telling EA. If you want to have NFS sell again. Stop trying to please both Hot Pursuit and Underground/Most Wanted fans. You are currently pleasing nobody.

We dont care about NFS! WHERE IS BURNOUT YOU FUCKS
Burnout paradise got a remaster relatively recently. I played it but didn't really care that much for it.

What would you like to see from the franchise if they do end up working on it?

A return to the form of Burnout Revenge. Closed off tracks, no more open world. Im sick and tired of open world racing games.

Paradise wasnt really my jam either. Also it didnt have a Crash mode :(

I know its a lot to ask.. so I'll take a Burnout Revenge remaster/port

Fuck the open world played out shit.
Get back to a racer like Hot Pursuit 2. I no longer wish to commute to my next race or take a wrong turn mid race.

Sware i do most of the racing staring at the mini map. lol
Yup. The only NFS game that did a good job with the open world was Most Wanted and that was over a decade ago. It had plenty of races and hidden cars/secrets scattered everywhere that it felt like it had an actual purpose. Unbound was awful with this - only a handful of areas you would drive to every day for the street racing meets. I lasted about 10 hours with Unbound and couldn't take the useless filler anymore, what a weird game.

I sure do miss the older NFS games where it was more serious about it's Road and Track origins. It was a nice break from Gran Turismo with more scenic and interesting tracks to drive. I sort of lost interest in NFS after Underground and have replaced the series with Forza Horizon.

To me Sim racing has been gotten more enjoyable than pure arcady racing.
Forza Horizon covers whatever lies in between.
