The protagonist of the series is Alex Cross, an African-American Metropolitan Police Department detective and father who counters threats to his family and the city of Washington, D.C.
So long as "damn them white people" isn't every other line of dialogue I'm down for this.
Maybe we can get an Alex Cross/Shaft/Hawk/Black Dynamite crossover episode!
We just lost Richard Roundtree but Sam Jackson can fill in, Avery Brooks is still around, and Michael Jai White is still swesome.

I loved the old novels and movies, especially Along Came a Spider. That movie that Tyler Perry tried to float was unfortunately very bad.
This looks like it could be good. Aldis Hodge managed to make Hawkman, a comic character I have always found incredibly boring, a joy to watch. So I'll give this movie a shot.

That the one with Ashley Judd and...Cary Elwes? With Morgan Freeman? Or am I thinking of Kiss the Girls? Anyway, is Cross mostly dealing with psychos, serial killers, kidnappings, etc (basically Silence of the Lambs stuff) or does he delve into the mob, occult, conspiracy, criminal heists and whatnot? They gonna do the Reacher thing of 1 book 1 season?

That was Kiss the Girls. They have a lot of books to pull from. Think they are going the Reacher route.

So it's out... Has anyone seen it?
I don't want to read fan-girling reviews that are all about Aldis Hodge's good looks and whatnot. I want to hear about story and the character of Alex Cross.

So I fired up the first episode. Again, other than the 90's films I know basically nothing about Alex Cross. In this show they reference some prior stuff so I'm assuming they skipped some early books, or maybe he started with a dead wife, flower stalker, and a 6 month suspension.
Anyway, its about as subtle as amop of paint, but well acted. You know who the racist bad guy is gonna be and Cross gets to knock them down, either verbally or physically because Hodges is HUGE. Maybe not Reacher big, or at least they don't film him that way. There are lots of scenes of folks talking that feels a bit heavy with "the jive talk" but maybe its authentic, I wouldn't know. Being set in DC is makes sense that virtually everyone is black, though they have the now standard female police captains (I can't even remember that last time I saw a dude as police chief in a show unless he was the bad guy). Nice conversation about BLM/defund the police with a couple black cops. So while there are racial bits, at least so far its not aggressively "fuck white people" type stuff.
Cross fits the "positive male role model" bit as well, since he has two kids.
As a cop show its just alright. Lots of "get the tech guy to give me my next clue" which is just lazy writing. But seems like they are setting up a big conspiracy thing for him to take out so
I'll forgive the lack of real "detecting" in just the first ep.

I got about 25 minutes in on the first episode. It's fine. I like the main lead, but it's what I call a "dad show." It's predictable as all hell.
I might continue watching it, but I got as far as the ballroom/gala scene.......and I can tell the white dude is the bad guy.
About as subtle as a sledgehammer or a Netflix show. I guess I would recommend Bosch over this, just from what I've seen, but honestly, Bosch had a rough first season, so I'll give some slack.

The author for the Alex Cross novels has an interesting back story to why he made Cross black and his writing felt authentic... He's a white guy, btw and didn't kowtow to Hollywood wanting to make him white.

I used to love the early books. Then the Alex cross stories became very predictable and outlandish. With the authors attempts to connect everything and tie up all the loose ends (his poor family and all that 
). Kinda gave up when a main Character was pretty much described as ‘Brad Pitt’ and the books just felt like they were written as movies. Or movie tie ins. Even though there was no movie )
Thought the movies kiss the girls was pretty good, but along came a spider kind of murdered the book. Didn’t really watch much of the Tyler Perry movie.
Haven’t read one in years, but maybe I’ll give this a try over the Xmas period, once the jackal has finished

??You know he is the bad guy quite early, actually it's almost from the onset, why are you acting like you saw through it? Don't think they're going for the 6th sense type of finale.
There was his first appearance when it wasn't clear. Though they cast the most "suave serial killer" looking guy EVER, how that one girl swallowed her apprehension and started dating him, she deserves it
I hope this family stuff doesn't get dragged out. You'd think Cross would just send them away. Seems odd that given the 'hood he lives in, white folks can just show up and mess with his house without getting spotted. I was hoping his community ties was his secret weapon and SEVERLY restricted rich white folks from directly messing with him.

Oh, I know, I am just saying it was obvious from the second he turned around and said hi. Again, I don't expect a deep mystery here. This is the kind of show my 81 year old mom will love.

A show with real balls would have had the guy call him on it and Cross whips it out.
I understand, but not everything needs to have a cliffhanger, sometimes you know who the antagonist is from the get go and then the rest unravels. I didn't see it all just yet though.

I was genuinely excited for this show, and most of the casting and performances are great....it's just boring as hell.
I have been sick this week laying in bed with not much to do aside from watching TV, so this show's glacial pace and aggressively dark cinematography has knocked me out cold at least three times.
