New Gundam announced. Studio KHARA X SUNRISE

I absolutely hate the main mecha design. Part of it is that they always insist on giving main Gundams those tacky red/blue/yellow colors and they really don't work here, but it's also just too busy/noisy, like it doesn't read well.

Maybe something you could fix with a repaint, I guess.

More details:

The story begins with Amate Yuzuriha, a high-school student living peacefully in a space colony floating in outer space. When she meets a war refugee named Nyaan, Amate is drawn into the illegal mobile suit dueling sport known as Clan Battle.

Under the entry name "Machu," she throws herself into fierce battle day after day, piloting the GQuuuuuuX. Then an unidentified Gundam mobile suit pursued by both the space force and the police appears before her, along with its pilot, a boy named Shūji.

Kazuya Tsurumaki (FLCL, Gunbuster 2: Diebuster) is directing the anime, and Yoji Enokido (Bungo Stray Dogs, Sailor Moon Super S, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Ouran High School Host Club) is supervising the series scripts and writing the scripts with Hideaki Anno (Evangelion, Shin Godzilla). Illustrator Take (Katanagatari, Zaregoto, Pokémon Sun & Moon) is designing the characters, and Ikuto Yamashita (Evangelion, Shin Kamen Rider, Yukikaze) is the mechanical designer.

This thing's got a pedigree. I'm really not digging those character designs but all the other big names get a thumbs up from me. I'm also not onboard with yet another high school arena fighter after how safe Sunrise played Witch from Mercury (Geass guy just wasn't free to Valvrave hard enough), but I am a sucker for Gundam and will always give it a shot.

clan battles?

I know people are gonna shit on the mecha designs but I would rather have them try something different than always using the same cookie cutter aesthetics.

FYI, the main mecha designer also designed the gauntlet runner in Metaphor. He also designed the mecha in Rebuild of Evangelion movies.

Basically the main staff for this series previously worked on the Rebuild of Evangelion.

What is it with the Japanese and tournament stories?
Easier way to tell conflict stories? I don't really know. But if I remember correctly, Gundam right now is targeting children, and many children don't know what Gundam is. Manga/anime that are aimed at children/teens usually have tournament arc too.

It sounds like this fugitive guy shows up in the first episode, so I assume the arena might just be an element in episode 1 to establish the lead’s piloting skills, and then when she and her friends meet this fugitive, their world gets turned upside down and they end up on the run and get involved in a major struggle far bigger than anything they ever expected with their lives.

Just my feeling. Witch from Mercury had a lead who was a skilled pilot but had her first proper arena fight in episode 1, whereas this synopsis makes it clear the lead is already an experienced arena fighter, so I feel it’s unlikely the show will continue to follow her doing something she’s already been doing for a good while.

while I'm mostly a UC fan, I am surprisingly down with this. the mech design is different enough from the traditional Gundam that I can just take it as some random mech show and not a Gundam show instead, so that's fine by me. character design seems fine with me also. hopefully it doesn't disappoint.

I didn't end up liking G-Witch so....we'll see. Anytime I see a new Gundam project now I can't help but think that I'd rather they just finish Hathaway Part 2 instead.

Apparently Anno is also doing a Yamato movie?

That guys is living the Otaku dream. Godzilla, and Ultraman? And now Gundam and Yamato? Insane

Unless for some reason intentional, people should check-out the story synopsis at the Italian version of the official site, before they get around to fixing things. I'll avoid spoilers, but it's certainly interesting, maybe even more so considering some of the series' staff.

Site is down now but I saw a screencap elsewhere of what you're talking about. Very interesting.

The site lasted longer than I would have expected.

Well, whatever, I grabbed the synopsis, before the site died. Text is below, if people want to copy and translate themselves.

Nell'anno U.C.

The colors are not a problem... I want it to be transformed into vehicles.

Days like these...

Have a Blessed Day
"The story begins with Amate Yuzuriha, a high-school student living peacefully in a space colony floating in outer space." It's good to know that the space colony is floating in outer space. This along with the art style seals the deal. Hard pass

The entire first minute of OP's preview reminded me of that recent Digimon anime.

Definitely a different style and it makes me curious.

So, some things from the trailer...

Top one not so much, but the other two...I think that pretty much confirms the rumors/leaks from before. Old dude also does look like an older Challia Bull from the original Gundam series

When the fuck is this suppose to air, so I can mainline it straight to my brain
TV air dates haven't been announced nor number of episodes (although the general assumption is at least 24/25 episodes in total). A movie version of presumably the first few episodes will hit Japanese theaters this January 17th. Assuming it follows the current model, the earliest the show could start would be this April, unless the powers-that-be run it on some irregular schedule.

A timeline where Feds lose but Whitebase and Amuro’s Dad’s brain damaged gundam upgrade still exists?

Color me intrigued but highly skeptical in where the story will take me.

Official new synopsis (from the booklet given out at theatres, today is when GQuuuuuuX Beginning premiered).

STORY
U.C. 0079: ONE YEAR WAR
The Principality of Zeon declared war on the Earth Federation, initiating the conflict known as the "One Year War."
On U.C. 0079.09.18, Char Aznable, the "Red Comet" of the Principality of Zeon, infiltrated Side 7 and discovered the Earth Federation's new prototype mobile suit, the "Gundam." Acting on a bold decision, Char seized the machine and successfully commandeered the Federation's Pegasus-class ship as well.
Despite deploying the RX-78-01 Gundam to recover the stolen Gundam, the Earth Federation's efforts ended in failure. Subsequently, the Principality of Zeon began to analyze the Gundam, spurring dramatic advancements in mobile suit development.
Simultaneously, research into "Newtypes," humans with heightened intuition and precognition, continued. The Gundam, repainted for Char's exclusive use, was equipped with a psycommu system and cockpit enhancements. Alongside his brilliant combat tactics, Char formed a partnership with the Newtype pilot Chalia Bull, executing joint operations so seamless they came to be known as "M.A.V." (Mobile Assault Vanguard) strategies.
After two decisive battles at Solomon, the Principality of Zeon successfully cornered the Earth Federation. However, the Federation launched a desperate counteroffensive, attempting to drop the asteroid fortress Solomon (renamed Konpei Island) onto the lunar city of Granada.
Char's unit intercepted the operation but found altering the asteroid's trajectory nearly impossible. Just as all hope seemed lost, an unexplained phenomenon called "Zeknova" shifted Solomon's course, sparing Granada from destruction.
This turning point led to the Principality of Zeon's ultimate victory in the One Year War. However, Char Aznable and his red Gundam have remained missing ever since.

I kinda wished they give Frozen Teardrop an anime and show them new Gundams. Then Bandai will make model kits/metal builds/metal composite so I can collect hehe

I still can't get out of my head how terrible Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom was

My biggest issue with SEED Freedom is I watched it 15 years too late. Would have been more enjoyable when I was younger. I did find Kira's characterization in Freedom to be reasonable progression. Teenage optimism does wane. Athrun was there to set him straight.

A fellow I used to rent a room to was collecting Mobile Suit Gundam École du Ciel. I never finished the manga so I don't know how the story eventually progressed. It would be interesting to see it animated.

,I didn't like the main girl... Lacus or the one with the ugly name, very annoying.

I expected more from the movie, like a Macross. Not even the combats were interesting.
