One Way Heroics | Don't look back

Hey guys! Time for another game recommendation out of the Indie Games thread series:

Guys... its $1,99

Currently, only playable via the Playism website. These guys are not only selling it, but also put in a LOT of effort to localize/translate it and bring it over in the west. Huge props and a big thank you from my side to the ones putting effort into making these games playable in the west, especially considering One Way Heroics is really fun and engaging, but also in general since way too many interesting games are never being released over here. For that effort alone you deserve my money, thank you. Read the full comment here:

I really hope gaffers check out the game. BudokaiMR2 put his blood sweat and tears into the game over a period of 11 months to get it localized. Initial localization was only a couple months, but we've been testing it and refining the script since then. It's insanely hard to test as well, since so much of the game is randomized, and there's a buttload of loot in the game.

The game is basically a turn based roguelike sidescrolling dunge... er... overworld crawler. Darkness approaches from the left and you are escaping from it, exploring the world, beating demons, bartering with merchants, upgrading your equipment, levelling up and generally kicking ass until you are strong enough to finish off the demon lord and saving the world.

But that is only the beginning.

As you play the game, you will earn points based on your performance to unlock more classes, new skills, and new ways to conquer the ever-looming Darkness, like a possibility to transfer your most valuable items to your next run. You will even earn points if you die. Defeat is not the end. Instead you always get a sense of improvement by unlocking more customization options, which makes each run rewarding in itself. The game does a very good job at engaging the player by allowing an easy entry into the game, but still offering plenty of challenge and tactics if you feel like you are up for it, especially by gradually unlocking more options instead of overwhelming the player right out of the gate. Even considering the surprising amount of depth and challenge it can offer, the game is by no means one of the hardest/deepest games in the genre, but I believe it comes together splendidly and feels original enough to deserve a shoutout in the form of this thread.

Some bullet points:
  • Turn Based
  • Lots of Items, character classes, skills, secrets and baddies to find/defeat
  • Roguelike Mechanics in a randomized dimension
  • These dimensions can be identified by their seed and shared
  • Unlock more options/playable characters/content by playing the game
  • Game doesnt require to be online
  • ...but still has some Online Features if you are connected to the Internet:
    - Online leaderboards for your current dimension
    - A daily Challenge for every player that gathers the saviors in the same dimension for a leaderboard competition.
    - Spirits named after other players who died in that dimension.
    - Twitter functionality following victory or defeat
    - General bug fixing and version upgrades (performed at startup)

Some impressions from the Indie Games thread:
I think what impresses me most about One Way Heroics compared to its closest contemporary Half Minute Hero is just how in depth every system is. While the interface trims a lot of the usual fat found in RPG UIs and menus, on the whole everything you would normally see from a full fledged RPG is represented here. Starting stats are important, properly equipping yourself will mean the difference between life and death, party positioning could cost you several minutes of progress or ensure your briefly enjoyed victory. You will know the weight of the world is on your shoulders, you will watch your party get disintegrated yet again by the mist, you will hit the ground running repeatedly with newfound knowledge of the map every single time until you’ve crafted the best possible run. Then you can dump your world and explore an entirely different place, listening to the cries of the NPCs as they fall victim to the impending darkness.

One Way Heroics is probably the greatest video game representation of Groundhogs Day I’ve ever played.

For $2 you really can't go wrong.

Hmm why I like One Way Heroics. ( won't be nice I'm really bad at this kind of thing ! ) Well it's probably because it's kind of the strange mix between FTL ( you need to move forward, every game can be kind of different if you take a new Dimension, you can choose a different class ( + perk ) like you would choose a different ship ) and a a/jrpg.

It's hard, ( at least for me ), but really rewarding ( when you beat the boss of a dimension you know how many people did it before you, you get to see a message from each of them, what character they had with what level, gear, etc.. ).

In a way the content seems small ( there isn't tonnes of different kind of weapon, spells and all ), but procedural Dimensions ( map ), the different classes ( 7 of them ), being able to choose perk at the start, and special event ( for one day ( or week ? ) x world is cursed, no level up but better drop; or x world give more xp but with harder monster ( probably other events too, just saying what is up right now ) make me think you can actually spend hours and hours on it ( heck in one day I must have spend about 5 hours on it, and it only made me 'finish' one dimension with a single class ).

The way the online is handled is also very very good, it's still a single player game, but the game advertise a dimension each day, as to get many people to play the same dimension ( meaning even such a small community can easily compare their score on a same world ), it also do some small thing which give some kind of a Demon's souls online feeling ( you get to meet other player ghost who ask you to beat the boss in their stead, you see other player advance in the same dimension at the top left part of the screen ).

It's actually the first time I even think about maybe making a OT ( but like you can see with that post, I'm not very good when it come to make well organized post/thought ! ), hell I'm even thinking about doing some kind of giveaway because I think I could have spend more than those $1.99 ( but I couldn't be sure I would like the game before playing it, better safe than sorry ), and I want to do the best I can to get the community get bigger even if it's just by offering like 5 games to other people.

Its basically the roguelike-style game design school. Start a game, see how far you are going, die, learn from your mistakes and try again, all the while you pick up items, level up and prepare for the fight with the demon boss.

My first run was 45km and I died to a horde of zombies in a dungeon. For that first run I got 5 "Hero points", which I exchanged for an item slot that I can now use to carry over an item to my next run. I put my decent armor in there and started my next run with a better armor immediately and managed to destroy the monsters in the dungeon that previously killed me. I got cheeky though and have been squashed by darkness in the dungeon because I didnt get out again.

The game is really fun and deeper than I would have imagined, at least judging based on first glance. The perks and armor/weapon skills really make these items feel different and allow for certain tactics. Gotta love the details/polish as well, like not talking to the fairy and then getting snark remarks for ignoring her, the multiple world setups and even online integration (which I havent tried yet). The ability to carry over items means its not punishingly hard either and you will always see some progress.

This game is really clever.

A word about the content in the game. The game has a vast amount of unlockable content as in new classes, perks and unlockable secret items on top of the randomized content you'll encounter on each playthrough. Additionally, it has plenty different modes for the well versed world savior on top of two difficulty settings:

Finishing the game once might be considered "short", as I "beat" the demon boss after about ~2 hours. However, that doesnt account for dipping into any of the other modes, learning how to use the other classes or even attempting the higher difficulty setting. This game lends itself extremely well to be played in short bursts, yet still allows for a certain mastery of its surprisingly deep systems if you seek the challenge.

This game is really nifty and deserves to be spread a bit more. Use this thread to ask questions, share hints/tricks, challenge each other to a certain dimension or even SHARE a cool/devious/impossible/beginner friendly dimension you found. Lets help the dev and the awesome guys over at Playism to a few more sales :)

Thanks for the thread, Toma!

I'll be happy to answer any questions anyone might have. It's a surprisingly deep game, and has a ton to offer.

My first piece of advice: Try to die in new and interesting ways. The bad endings are great. :D

Btw Toma, would you mind adding that the developer of the game is Smoking WOLF? Thanks!

I just noticed that today after being squashed by a wall. Really surprising how much thought the dev put into small details. Same with the fairy being mad at you if you speak to her at all. Really love these little touches. Reminds me a bit of the character selection shenanigans that Full Bore had with its character switching text.

Sure. What is his official website?

I grabbed this over the weekend actually and only got a chance to put about an hour into it, but I've really enjoyed what I've played thus far!

The music is good and the rogue-like feel is unique in terms of the scrolling field. Looking forward to streaming this.

I also died a lot. Haha.

My first successful run of the game:
G8MDN7f.png

It was my third try overall with that class. Knight is probably a more suited beginner choice if you have some issues with sword master.

Whats everyones progress? So far I've only beaten the game on normal/standard maps with only sword master and knight.

This is a bit of a long-shot, but can someone else try running this game on Wine (ideally under Mac OS)? The game seems to run fine, except for the text being completely screwed up. Like, it starts like this and gets worse. I'm not sure if it's an issue with my Wine config, or the fact that my Mac's set to Japanese language, or both. I could use another data point!

Have you tried switching to software mode in the config options to see if that fixes it? I had a ton of issues until I switched to that even though my card is plenty good enough.

Edit: Hopefully people notice this game is only $2, if you are even remotely interested in the concept there is very little "risk" involved.

Really glad to see people on GAF enjoying this now.
As thetrin mentioned before it was a very long and difficult localization,
but it is the one game that has impressed me the most out of the entire indie scene.
It is basically the game JRPG style game I have always wanted but never realized.

So it was worth it all in the end. Now it is just up to us to spread the word and get more people playing!

Thanks again for making the OT Toma!

Ugh, I officially nominate this as the worst town ever:
dOJgOVU.png

Lots of room, but only 2 guards? Come oooon, especially annoying because I am having some issues keeping my frail adventurer class alive. First time trying it, but the item identifying skill is mighty handy. Lets see how far I get with this.

Oh and yeah, I wanted to kill an enemy with a bow. I need a bow.

Really glad to see people on GAF enjoying this now.

There were quite a few more people enjoying this over in the Indie thread, but we'll see. Smaller Indie threads always have a bit of a problem staying afloat, we'll try our best ;)

Onto continuing my adventure!

Might not help the game ( or topic ) much but I'll buy the game to the first 4 people who quote that part of my post ( I think I'll just need a pm with a mail, since it work that way on playism-games from what I saw of their gift option ).

---------

My first clear of the first difficulty was with bard, while recruiting the charisma judge ( which I think is the only one you can recruit in first difficulty ? ).

Second difficulty really get tricky, only finished it with 2 class and by using some stuff from my vault.

Finishing the second difficulty also unlock a 3rd one and the possibility to play each difficulty in maniac mod ( no godess nor vault ).... yup this game content is actually really impressive.

Woah, its kind of crazy how different these dimensions can be. I would have thought they are more or less the same with different randomized elements, but nope.

Dimension XMHJUZBN was rather easy and I managed to beat the demon boss with 2 different classes on the 3rd and 1st respective run. The dimension had plenty of open fields, small one room dungeons and a good amount of towns so I was never running out on anything. Probably an easy beginner area if someone needs one.

OSR4GBTR on the other hand... Only tried it 4 times with the adventurer so far, but holy crap. Dozens of HUGE dungeons which I havent seen in my first map, great treasure (I was running around with ~15k worth items I wanted to sell), empty cities and areas filled with crap strong monsters (I basically ran away for the last 50-70km in hope of finding a merchant to sell my stuff to and buy some nice equipment). Oh and yeah, not to mention the huge mountain area which I had to climb over. There was an 8 spaces wide mountain which I needed to CLIMB over. Jeez. That area didnt give me a break, but the rewards were so damn good.

You could ask that in the Steam( or Indie Games) thread, since the game is on Greenlight and might as well end up on Steam at one point. They usually gobble up free games, ask them to post in this (One Way Heroics) thread and to quote your post here.

Also include a screenshot of the game, a short description and make sure to tell them that it would be preferable if only those quote your post who actually want to play the game and impressions would be very welcome because its a very unknown game and it would be nice if they gave something back to the developer by posting their impressions here after they got it for free.

Or if you want, I could ask them over in one of those threads and let them know about your giveaway. As you want :)

I know from experience that you are far better than me at selling a game to other people.. so yeah I wouldn't mind. ^ ^"

For the people who has Key(s) of Seals in their vault and want to see what it is used for, you can find it on the Dimension H8LSXRGQ ( was the advertised online Dimension 2 days ago if my memory serve me right ) very very close to the start ( 19km ).

Will do!

The second dimension I posted above has one of those doors as well. And a shit ton of other dungeons. Try beating that dimension with an adventurer please and tell me how it went :D

During the snow area there, I had 5 bears following me, I ran away and managed to get to 390km before being surrounded by several skeletons near a dungeon, but I doubt I would have managed to beat the demon king anyway.

$2? Sounds interesting enough.

Easily worth the asking price. I played a bit more than 3 hours so far, and even that would have been easily worth 2$ but the game still has plenty more to offer.

Wasn't easy ( mostly because of the adventurer class which I find quite weak ) but finaly beat it ( on easy but no vault used ).
Getting a decent weapon is really the hardest part, mine wasn't very strong but still better than the starting dagger, and used a scroll of flame on it for the boss fight, then mostly kited it while he burned.
Had quite a few 'holy shit moment' one of them where I had to awekning + jump over a bandit, then dash for my life.

video of the replay ( no sound -my fault- ), and text are hard to read when not in fullscreen :

Nicely done! Yeah I had a good weapon on my first run, but even then the adventurer was so frail that he died after being trapped to any opponent. And those mountains, so many mountains.

Still going to try later though, setting the boss on fire and then kiting sounds like a decent strategy, think you could have beaten him in a hand-to-hand fight somehow?

You actually never have to climb any mountains, there is always at least a small path somewhere. But yeah some dangerous mob ( red cap skeleton etc ) and Adventurer is very weak ( I went with 5 vitality perk ), sure dash allow you to flee, but fleeing also mean you get little xp ( and that dimension make it even harder by not having a goddess shrine in those first 400km ( at least I didn't find one ).

And yeah could probably have beaten him without that fire effect on the weapon, could move fast enough to get some regen of life without him being able to hit me ( best time to move is when he use meditate, so you can avoid his next spell ), thought the more the fight last the more risk I had to get another ennemy to spawn and attack me.

Fun fact. One time I was in town, and I was overburdened. I meant to drop a heavy axe so I could walk over to the merchant and sell a couple things.

I threw it instead of dropping it. It hit the merchant right in the face. The entire town lynched me. :(

I was too afraid to try what would happen. Curious whether they at least drop some decent loot though :p

Victor #12 on the 1.3x dimension. Knight's daily is pretty awesome: increased defense, constant healing, Demon Lord had nothing on me. Unlocked Hunter, too (shot some bats with a bow), now going to save up for a pet.

Great game here. I hope it has achievements when it makes it to Steam.

Since the engine is a very unique beast in itself I thought it would be difficult, but after talking with the developer Smoking WOLF he reassured me that Achievements should not be a problem for him to implement.
Stuff like getting the Steam overlay working properly and such could be the most troublesome part.

Nice to hear that he thinks its not impossible. Would certainly be a huge boon to the sales, roguelikes are usually gobbled up there anyway and the game is original enough to stand out from the crowd. Not to mention that 2$ on Steam would lead to sooo many impulse buys.

Today I learned it's useful to throw arrows when you don't have a bow, especially bomb arrow which are very nice.

Oh damn, thats a useful thing to know. I assume it did quite a bit less damage than shooting arrows with a bow, but still handy.

I did few big mistake of that kind
-killing an npc because of the 2 tiles range with a spear
-using a bomb and a vial of fire when I wanted throw it ( once just as I was gonna fight the Demon Lord... )

I'm slowly working on making some pretty good ( at least for me ) gear ( don't even really know why, probably for the last difficulty ) :
1386244545-gear.png

And I was wondering if BudokaiMR2 or thetrin knew who those effect on the armor are calculated ( difference between armor and damage reduction, how those multiple damage reduction effect accumulate ( if they do, like does my second "Absorbing" effect add anything since I already have it once )).

Happy to hear a steam version might get Achievements, thought I actually think the best 'Achievements-like' are already in the game in a better form than what you get from the steam one; small things like the silouhette/artwork of the class you were able to beat the Demon lord, those cup/medal showing which class beat what difficulty with or without using the vault; etc.

Yeah, the game did a great job at using those kind of achievements with actual ingame mechanics and I do agree that those are better, but the "Steam" achievements could (and should) add some more challenges on top of some basic stuff. Say getting to the demon lord on level 1 or whatever other weird and tough challenge you could think of.

Any other weird challenges you could suggest?

Bought in a heartbeat.

Yeah I still use vials of fire on myself occasionally and I put at least 200+ hours into the original Japanese version. I am so glad I didn't keep count of how many hours I put into debug ;p

Regarding the bonus effects on armors, I have actually been meaning to write a long e-mail to Smoking WOLF to clarify all that again. I remember asking a few questions during the lead up to BitSummit but it was mostly about how they stack.

They definitely stack normally.

Regarding the difference between Armor and Damage Reduction I can't even remember if I got an explanation from him. I always thought that it was a system where the damage was calculated based on Attack pwr vs. Armor like many old RPGS and Damage Reduction would just reduce the damage resulting from that calculation.

So I think it looks like this.

Attack - Armor = Damage (5% damage reduction) = damage to character

But this is just me coming up with this from playing the game so much and seeing some of the inner-workings. I have actually been meaning to see if he will gimme the game source code to play with one day. ;)

I will shoot off a mail tomorrow because I am actually curious what the official answer is!

And yeah I plan to come up with some really evil achievements. ^^
Has anyone in this thread actually beat the final boss? That battle is one of my favorite events in any game ever at this point. Blew me away when I first figured it out!

I was thinking about that recently as well, what are some others you liked? Rogue Legacy is sort of the action platformer equivalent, but I had a hard time thinking of traditional roguelikes.

Has anyone in this thread actually beat the final boss? That battle is one of my favorite events in any game ever at this point. Blew me away when I first figured it out!

Yes! Evil achievements are good.

And at the rate I am going atm, it will take me a few weeks to even see the last boss :p

Yeah, I plan to offer up a ton of ideas to the dev. Especially since it already has well done in-game *achievements* I think it is a good idea to go all out with Steam achievements.

We had already started distributing the original JP version and had decided to go forward with the localization AND ONLY THEN did I finally figure out the last boss. There are definitely well placed hints in the game but I doubt most people will figure it out on their own. The true genius of the game lies with that lead-up and fight IMO.

Give us a few more weeks, then I'd be ready and willing to hear some spoilerific endgame tidbits ;)

Haha I am pretty glad that the first few who figured it out haven't uploaded vids or anything. ;)

Although I do get the urge to just jump on Twitch over the weekend and stream it ;p

You know, I really can't come up with anything right now lol

Risk of Rain is the latest one, obv excluding this, but it's far from a typical roguelike. I should look into it, these kind of games are perfect for boring evenings and I have a few of them coming up.

Yeah, I had a hard time thinking of another one as well because its sort of a recent development to include these in games. FTL maybe, as far as roguelike-like goes. Its at least turn based and has some unlockables, but its far from being a traditional roguelike as well (although perfect for boring evenings if you didnt play it yet!).

Thanks, hope you will get and share those clarifications. ^ ^
