[PC Gamer] The PlayStation Network outage proves PC gamers were right to resist its mandatory sign-in requirement

Review-bombing campaigns are often motivated by half-baked culture war "controversies" about trans characters, queer developers, or supposed mafias of liberal writing consultants bending multi-million dollar companies to their will. Last May, though, we saw a great example of the review bomb's utility in pushing back on a genuine consumer grievance: Helldivers 2's PlayStation Network sign-in requirement.

To be fair to Sony and Arrowhead, it was communicated from the start that such a requirement was meant to be implemented eventually, and at the time, the stakes didn't seem all that high. Many players pointed to the galling exclusion of gamers in countries that can access Steam but not PSN as a reason to resist the imposition, but Sony has largely surrendered its PSN on PC ambitions while still weirdly excluding those countries in Helldivers 2 and its other releases, and players in the global north don't seem too bothered these days.

Let's call a spade a spade: Much of the backlash was because Sony's requirement was annoying, and the supposed "player protection" justification felt insulting when the move was clearly meant to force more users into Sony's PSN ecosystem. Having to juggle online services you wouldn't use if you didn't have to, another company insisting on having your email and other personal information, is always annoying.

But this weekend we saw first-hand that the issue goes much further than that, and PC gamers' capacity for acting annoying when we get annoyed helped us dodge a bullet. Sony's PlayStation Network was completely knocked out for 24 hours, and the company refuses to offer an explanation for what happened. If Sony had held firm on a PSN sign-in for Helldivers 2, it would have been just as borked on PC as it was on console. Ditto for if Sony had retained its log-in requirement for singleplayer games: You could effectively play God of War Ragnarok offline after creating or logging into a PSN account (unless you opted for a handy mod), but just like installing a PS5 disc drive, a PSN outage would have prevented first-time setup of something that simply does not require an internet connection.

Sony does not seem to understand the PC audience. I'd wager it's only being dragged to the platform kicking and screaming by the continued healthy growth of PC gaming and relative stagnation of consoles. But the demands and delays Sony subjects its PC players to smack of condescension to me: A company that believes it is operating from a place of strength, gracing PC gamers with the essential PlayStation exclusives we've been bereft of for so long.

The truth is that Sony has to win us over. There are too many good games on PC to acquiesce to being shackled to a service whose founding principle is charging players extra to go online with games, internet connections, and consoles they've already paid for. One that, fourteen years ago, suffered one of the greatest cybersecurity disasters of the 21st century so far. We don't even know what happened to the PlayStation Network between February 7 and 8 yet or how thoroughly it may have been compromised, Sony still won't say. But after reporting on this absolute cluster as it happened, it's clear to me that mandatory sign-ins to extraneous "services" like the PlayStation Network aren't just an annoyance: They are an odious imposition to be avoided at all cost, with genuine risks to the consumer.

Just because you might (quite possibly correctly) agree with the aspect of something being review bombed for doesn't the validate the use of review bombing. It'll never cease to be a stupid argument for an even stupid process.

PSN is also a relatively small blip for something that is simply a minor annoyance in most circumstances the rest of the year.

Outages are an inherent risk of living in the interconnected world. They can happen to any company for a litany of different reasons.
But when interconnectivity and online checks are mandatory? That's a problem.

I'm all for the advancement of the medium and the convenience of digital; but Sony, Ms, Steam, Nintendo, whomever needs to find a better solution that "lol get fucked" when you can't access your games because of THEIR failure to keep their services up and running.

I'm talking about PS specifically, but yeah. All of this is getting too anti-consumer I'm inclined to Pirate shit, I don't own anything when buying digitally anyway.
The more anti-consumer and neo-corp these AAA companies get, the more I retreat to older games. On a side note, Grandia is fucking amazing. Replaying it for the first time in over 20 years.

PSN is only a small part of the problem.
Steam is responsible for the mess PC gaming is in right now and people shouldn’t be hypocritical about it.

There should be 0 logins required to access any games.

Take the fight to Steam, they are the source of the problem.
That’s actually a correct take. There is no physical on PC thanks to Steam success, unlike consoles. During PSN outage I happily played Spyro with my son that I’ve installed from PS4 disc. A feat impossible with a steam game.

You can play PS4/5 and Steam / Steam Deck games when not online. Not sure where this is coming from.
Tell me how can I install a steam copy (usually the only copy I could possibly buy) when the Steam is down.

Steam and its success basically destroyed physical ownership on PC, even with boxed releases you’re getting a Steam code.

But this is maybe a topic for a separate thread.

I believe they had a two hours'ish one back in December? It's not very common.
Smart man always store backups locally because cloud is just someone else’s PC in a server room. Same could be applied to every service possible. Steam is reliable until it isn’t. But with consoles like PS and Switch i have at least some physical options to play. For PC Steam Storefront is usually the only way to even install the copy. So PC gamers scolding PSN is hilarious, considering that they’ve cheerfully destroyed the concept of physical ownership on their platform.

Just shows that no matter how modern we think we are, things get fucked from time to time. Locking everything out when the net goes down is a real disservice to everyone.

Online play should be free for every player. You want to lock content behind a subscription? Fine, just don't make people pay twice for internet fees.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Where are the “it only takes 4 minutes to sign up/in for a Playstation account” console folks?

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I like that they start off by telling me that they're the authority on what I can or can't be annoyed by. I won't be annoyed when they finally shutter PC Gamer, I can tell you that much.

But either way, anything that phones home *unnecessarily* is essentially trash to me. Don't tell me I need an account so you can manage my unlockable costumes on the server or some sort of excuse like that. Put it on my computer. Figure it the fuck out. You were fine doing it that way for decades, so don't pretend like something changed.

Agreed Steam has the power to stop it. At best rockstar would leave.

L for sony thats for sure.

it seems this PSN "outrage" was used amazingly to make fun of PS. and a lot of criticism (even from PS fans) was thrown at sony for their lack of communication and transparency.

little L here, Little L there....overtime, it makes you an Xbox too.

Sony really should watch out.

Perfect world, yeah. But we live in a world where data about users is often times more valuable than the product itself.

Counterpoint. GOG shows digital can be okay to consumers. I say this as a long time physical supporter.

Can't disagree with that either. Valve should really put a stop to the practice entirely. The PSN outage highlights a big reason why.

All these companies have departments for PR and social media managers...but they suck at actually telling you what's going on in a timely matter enough of the time.

Nothing wrong with scolding a company over having a less reliable storefront, and for being silent the whole day it happened.

Physical ownership for PC wasn't killed by Steam or gamers, it was draconian levels of DRM in the early to mid 2000s that required you to sign-in a key to a digital service to register your games...some even giving you finite installs. All to stop piracy, which didn't even work, and PC games in Gamestop's were dying before Steam even took off.

Steam over time won because their DRM didn't burden the customer, you could play online, and patching started to be required for games to work. Even on console, outside of Nintendo games, limited run titles that include later patches on the disc, and a handful of other devs that do their job properly...physical games are still reliant on a service to function, which spits in the face of "ownership".

I mean not being able to download a new game while steam is down falls into that edge case category of not being able to register your new drive while PSN is down making all your physical games useless during that period also.

For online MP and shared-world games, that’s just the way it goes.

For SP experiences? Becoming less and less clear. The market is shifting to cloud for both business and technical reasons and we are to blame for being willing to accept a different delivery method with a greater number of fail points in the name of lower costs.

And? Why introduce extra points of failure, for no good reason at all.
There are many services and systems with added fail points in the name of enterprise strategy even when there is no technical advantage. Making extra money on Steam is welcome, in the short-term, but that alone doesn’t forward the core business of PS to justify the cross-platform push.

For markets where PSN doesn’t exist, the criticism is valid. Everywhere else? It’s a comparatively low price for a game you otherwise wouldn’t get.

Isn’t most of PSN running on Azure nowadays? I forget what the full details were of their partnership…

The PS outage occurred right after Sony removed mandatory PSN login on PC. The timing couldn’t be any better.

Don't care about the outage outage...more interested in the level of knowledge players have these days.
Are people saying that with the PSN outage they were not able to play games that were downloaded to their console digitally or via disc install (non-multiplayer games obv)?

I.E. if a player had Elden ring installed on their PS5 (digitally purchased...because the DLC is digital only) during this outage they were not able to play elden ring (in this example)? Cause that is complete and utter bs from grifters or ps owners who do not know how to set up their console.

I believe this was the problem many people ran into:

Basically, you have to set the PS5 as the primary console to play offline. However, some people said that DLCs needing to be verified also caused them to be unable to play.

Edit: The DLC issue may have occurred when attempting to play a physical game with purchased DLC from the store. Not sure.

This is what I assumed as well. If folks have multiple PS's this can be an issue...but only on the non-primary PS system(s).

If on the other hand you are sharing libraries around between a few friends "them's the breaks".

I could not access the games I bought with my own money, not rented shit from PS+

We need to go back to Physical games or let people OWN their digital library.
You didn't set your ps5 as primary , otherwise You could, unless it's an online Game or a Game with mandatory connection.

I am not trying to start anything or something. It's a genuine question: How easy and visible is this to the user of the PS5? If it is hidden somewhere in a menu and the user isn't actively told about this (which wouldn't surprise me), then it's not only his fault.

Steam does let you create local backups for any games you own. Time to buy a BluRay burner and get burning.
