Prototype versus Infamous Sales Age

EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich singled out the war between rival open-world action titles Infamous and Prototype in his retail sales preview today, estimating that Prototype will eventually win out over its rival by a sales margin of 90 percent.

Sucker Punch's PlayStation 3-exclusive Infamous was released on May 26, while Radical's similar, yet multiplatform title Prototype (PC, 360, PS3) launched on June 6.

Though EEDAR estimates that Prototype will triumph overall, it also predicts that Infamous will outsell its rival by 35 percent on the PlayStation 3, a margin that may increase to 50 percent in the future.

"Due to near identical game play and quality scores, the Infamous vs. Prototype case study presents interesting data to publishers when considering the sales bump a title could receive by choosing exclusivity over a multiplatform release," concluded Divnich.

Divnich added that since EEDAR does not have data on how much it cost publisher Activision to support development of Prototype for three platforms, it is currently difficult to tell which strategy will ultimately pay out the most.

So the early returns in in the sales results.

Infamous does 368.6 in about 5.5 weeks.

Prototype does 419.9K on 360 in about 4.5 to 5 weeks and ~180k on the PS3

True although we'll obviouly have more data for the thread when the actual NPD comes out this week.

This is true, even if the conclusion will state the obvious.

they are mistakingly assuming that gameplay/review scores are the only significant contributions to sales.

LOL.

They do play alike. Also Infamous has a comfortable lead in reviews, last I checked the medians were like 80 vs 90.

His insight is really that putting a PS3 game on 360 may result in higher sales.

Why didn't anyone tell all the third party devs before they invested in all these 2009-2010 PS3 exclusives?

Its 80 versus 84 on Metacritic for the PS3 versions of Prototype and Infamous respectively. Not that I'm necessarily a fan of Metacritic.

It's really bad that the average, wait, barely average game that is Prototype even sells good.

Also, what a fucking Sherlock Holmes! How can someone predict a multiplatform game would sell more than an exclusive on the console with the lowest sales? Color me flabergasted. How could anyone NOT predict that??

Prototype excels at making you feel like a badass and effortlessly moving through the city can be a lot of fun. Unfortunately that fun is pretty short lived and the rest of the game is pretty low-quality.

I'm sure it will outsell Infamouse overall, though, and that is a damn shame.

Then why couldn't you just wait until enough information was available before making this thread ?

oh you.

It'd been lost in the NPD 500 shuffle or just buried in the corpses of console warriors.

Why is the average review for it 78 versus 84 for Infamous then?

Because it's a thread that can easily be bumped since time works in a manner where it moves forward.

I only played the inFamous Demo but I enjoy Prototype more, I hope it sells well.

I played both. I personally felt Infamous was more consistent throughout but that Prototype was more fun and I felt like more of a superhero.

I was too scared to discuss the game in the official thread, it's one of those threads were dissenting opinions don't seem to go down very well :D

I'm not shocked that a multiplatform title beat an exclusive one in sales. I am shocked that a high profile title beat a somewhat average profile one, though. They both deserved to succeed, so good news all around.

:lol, Stoney stirring up the hornets nest.

I legitmately have never mentioned Infamous on this forum or If I have its been rare and I've refrained from editoralizing about the merits of either game in this thread even though I've played Prototype.

I would argue the hornets are are out looking to sting in this example ;)

I didn't play either of these games aside from the inFamous demo.
I'll get around to it.

e.g. any Sony-GAF thread where the same clique of 20 or so people hype each other up so much that they form a reality distortion bubble around the thread where hyperbole is rampant and expectations are always unrealistically high and dissent/critiquing is jumped upon with :lol icons and character assassination. Happens every damn time, too.

Anyways, Infamous is the better game, but in the end it really can't compete against a multiplatform title which has the purchasing power of 360 consumers behind it.

I doubt it. inFamous had the benefit of a pre-release demo and the Uncharted 2 beta voucher among other things.

I don't. Prototype has the word of mouth benefit. Someone with only a PS3 might see a friend playing prototype on his 360, and decide "I need this game!"

Prediction: Console owners buy more of a game exclusive to their platform than a similar multiplatform title, but the multiplatform title sells more and is probably more profitable.

Shocking

After I'd finished Infamous I really wanted to talk about it because I couldn't believe the things I heard people saying about on podcasts and the like and to a lesser degree on the boards.

I read much of the official thread and felt confident in the fact that I wasn't really going to be able to have any constructive discourse on how I felt about it.

I say this knowing full well that I might be in the significantly smaller minority because since then I've pretty much heard nothing but praise for the game from every podcast I've listened to. Still it would be nice to be able to not feel the same way as the majority and still have them acknowledge your point of view as valid.

Especially a game with what seemed to be triple the marketing budget.

Sony made a good ad for inFAMOUS, they just didn't do enough of a marketing campaign for the game. Hell, Protoype was one of the sponsors for UFC99 for chrissake and that's just one indicator of the multi-pronged approach Activision took in marketing Prototype.
