Anyone who puts strange chips in the brains deserves what they get. Are we even at the stage where there are beneficial brain fixes like pacemakers but for fixing messed up neurons?

It won't be too long before the majority of humans augment themselves with tech like this, adoption will largely happen for financial reasons - because of the advantages it'll offer.

Yeah, a lot of tech stuff today were scifi dreams when I grew up. The speed of coming tech might go into hyperspeed if we create a super AI. Not to mention if scientists manage to create augmented humans. Funny thing is that even if anti-gravity vehicles are invented and there are corporations with mind-controlled employees trying to take over nations, these things will be as normalized as smartphones and nuclear weapons. Humans have a remarkable ability to adapt to every new situation and environment.

If I ran a business using augmented staff surely the first efficiency gain would be to take that sack of meat away and stick the chip in a server or droid?

The author chose to do it for whatever reason. 500 ethereum was sent to the null address, destroying it, and included the message on the transaction. People monitor the blockchain for large or unusual transactions, so it was noticed.

A nanochip could be implanted in your brain through ingestion or inhalation like a drug or brainworms do, you wouldn't notice anything. The chip doesn't need to be advanced, only to send or block electric signals to a specific part of the brain, like a pacemaker, to induce suicidal or self destructive thoughts, or submission or agressive... Humans integrating with tech is the best case scenario for society because people can still work, and I think they'll perform better than machines in a lot of tasks, especially creative ones. But if the server/droid is true AGI, then I'd say you're right.
