[UK] Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row

Apple is taking the unprecedented step of removing its highest level data security tool from customers in the UK, after the government demanded access to user data.

Advanced Data Protection, external (ADP) means only account holders can view items such as photos or documents they have stored online through a process known as end-to-end encryption.

In a statement Apple said it was "gravely disappointed" that the security feature would no longer be available to British customers.

"As we have said many times before, we have never built a backdoor or master key to any of our products, and we never will," it continued.

From 1500GMT on Friday, any Apple user in the UK attempting to turn it on has been met with an error message.

Existing users' access will be disabled at a later date.

So, if I'm getting this right, the government wanted Apple to let them read all our text messages and access everything in our phones?
Pretty much. So basically the problem is if Apple gave them what they wanted then any system with this "backdoor" was effectively not secure but they were supposed to pretend that it was. (Since with something as valuable as a key to break in to everybody's phone that was going to escape at some point and who knows who would end up with it. Ok it's the stuff in the cloud but pretty much they were asking to make it not really secure) So Apple said pretty much we'll just cut to the chase and make it not secure so nobody will be under the mistaken impression that it's secure anymore.

Isn’t it just the case that if the police arrest a paedophile or terrorist and their phone is locked, they may have thousands of images the police cannot then check and use them in evidence?

It’s not a master plan to search everyone’s phones remotely.

Also - I think this feature is optional and hardly anybody was aware of it or has switched it on, so it makes no difference anyway.

When I did jury duty I managed to skip a case that would have gone on for weeks that was basically a group of lads attacking two girls - one with acid I think - and all the evidence was their mobile phone records - the messages passing between them. I guess with encrypted data there would be no conviction in that case now.

Correct. They would still require a warrant.

BUT….Do you trust that they will use that power correctly or do you think the temptation to just “have a wee look” and see what Joe Public is up to will be too much for them?

Encryption is there to protect our privacy. It also enables some terrible things, no one is questioning that. But as a wise man once said If you give up your freedom for safety, you don't deserve either one.

It's pretty obvious that they let people out after short sentences so they'll reoffend. Every time a "terrorist" strikes they are known to police. The more reoffending that happens the more laws they can pass to curtail the masses. They don't care about protection from 1 or 2 people they care about making everyone live in fear.

I guess the thing is that, up until now, criminals probably haven’t encrypted their phones, so when they are arrested, the police can get all the messages/photos off them. A couple of decades ago, nothing would be encrypted. It is interesting - I always assumed my internet history, messages - anything really - would be up for grabs if I was prosecuted for something and the police had a warrant. I suspect that most people here do, so it is uncontroversial.

Really? So if you were arrested for some low level crime, you think it’s acceptable for the police/government to go through all your information looking for more signs of crime? We are truly fucked if people think this is ok, but I must be in the minority.

I think you missed the bit where I said if they have a warrant - or for that matter if the information is relevant to the investigation. It has always been this way - same with searching your house and personal things to be fair.

The rapid state this country is going unbelievable. No wonder my close friend is making a long term plans to move to the USA.

Ah yes free access to anyone's private data to protect us.. if the UK government didn't import 100 of thousands of religious nutjobs every year and didnt run around trying to cater to Muslim needs. We wouldn't have a terrorist threats to begin with.

Showed this to the missus earlier, made me want to puke. And I fucking hate Apple

Fuck this country.

It's pretty bad when Apple is the good guy eh 😆

Fuck this already fragile state... we're not even 20 years away from being a failed state, We got starmer sending troops to Ukraine/Russian border too so we will be nuked soon!!

It's actually mad how anyone thinks it's OK for the UK Government to go through all their online footprint even if it's supposed to be secure this would be abused beyond words, Arrested for calling someone a lefty cunt on FB and they then go through everything they possibly can on you with an easy to obtain warrant..... UK citizens are such pussys and or so ill informed.

this is not a warrant, they’re still doing this on a daily basis. They probably have already got the data you are sending to iCloud as they will have tapped it off in the ISP data centre under whatever UK GCHQ version of PRISM is in play. Capture and store is the plan, with the ability to decrypt later!

All this messaging does is state publicly to the UK public is that we are doing this for your safety, we all know that’s not true and I think it’s naive to think it will not be abused. People still trust the government when we were locked in our houses while the health secretary was grabbing his receptionists arse and the PM was having wine every day. They’re rotten to the core (both parties)

Create the problem, provide the “solution.”

They’ve been doing this for centuries. Don’t worry, they have bread and circus to distract on the telly.

Switch to Signal, make a username, and don't use imessage or icloud. Unfortunately this will all get worse once AI is fully implemented. Everyone will be walking around with the worst spy devices known to mankind, and authoritarian countries will love it

The problem is the police have started arresting people for telling jokes and being offensive.
