How Do People Think That The Order: 1886 Will Turn Out?

I was really excited for The Order because I think Ready at Dawn are really great. I loved Daxter and Ghost of Sparta. Chains of Olympus was pretty meh, but still. I just haven't really liked what I've been seeing from The Order.

It doesn't seem to let you play enough. And giving me control in little pseudo cutscenes isn't something that excites me. I haven't watched every video, so maybe I'm missing something they have shown to dispell this. I don't mind cover shooters, in fact I like them, but the level structure seems very narrow which hurts for those type of games I think. The setting looks really cool and the graphics look amazing. I do like that there seems to be more variety in the gameplay based on your article. That should be a plus.

Anyway, I will definitely be playing it, but if I had to guess I'd say it will be pretty average and not really memorable. I'd love to be wrong. I think if I'm being honest I wish they'd have gone with something more along the Daxter/God of War route for a new IP. Something more action/adventure than this perhaps. Stil I'm curious to see how it turns out.

Most beautiful game we've ever seen, but linear levels and mediocre story leave much to be desired.

See more on our written review at IGN.com! (but we know you won't)

It will fit the knockoff uncharted market that tomb raider gave up

It aspires for nothing new or notable mechanically, and the story doesn't look like anything special. People that don't care about those shortcomings (like your average gaffer or game journalist) will still buy it because graphics and shooting, and probably have a decent enough time.

I think the game will do just fine, probably it will get 8s review score. While the gameplay is not anything special and not a strong point of the game, the story and set pieces will be the most important aspects making The Order interesting and fun to play.

I have faith in RaD :)

It's on my watch list but there's nothing I've seen so far that makes me want to own it. I'll see how reviewers and the internet react to it. Really my only interest is the graphics but a game needs a lot more than pretty graphics for me to pay $60.

I expect it to be a very short, extremely linear corridor shooter with gorgeous graphics. My big complaint about the game is how they have the button prompts that appear on the screen during QTEs.

It makes no sense- everything the devs have said about this game indicates they're going for something 'cinematic' or 'filmic'- they want this to be as much like a movie as possible. So why have a triangle button pop up in the middle of the screen during one of those cinematic moment? It breaks the immersion and makes the whole thing less cinematic.

I'll check out reviews and impressions first, but the game's looking very shallow and hollow to me at this point.

I personally think, outside of the graphics, it looks like complete dogshit. Reviews will be probably middling, around 70-75 Metacritic. As far as public reception, they'll likely be fans of the game who will love it, but most will think it's a mediocre game.

I think it is going to very much be a sleeper hit.

A lot of the negativity has revolved around the black bars and the fact it looks to have very standard mechanics.

I think we have not seen enough of the mechanics to truly say if they are in fact standard or not, and in fact they look quite competent the more I see. Not what I would call groundbreaking by any means, or for that matter doing anything new, but they do look to be doing what other games in the genre do. So I am not that concerned there.

I also think (most) people will get over the black bars once they see it in action in their own homes and they will eventually not even realize they are there and enjoy the fantastic visuals, which everything is leaning towards there is pretty much no doubt the game will have fantastic visuals. At least imho.

Take all of the above and combine a possible horror element that I was not even aware the game might have until the latest campaign just this past week, and yeah, that all equals a game that personally really fits my own tastes.

With that said, I do think it will be one of those games that some people truly just hate. That is one thing I can say with certainty.

It is actually by far my most anticipated game of Q1. Cannot wait.

Consumer opinions will be mixed with the majority feeling like they wasted their money on overhyped dogshit. Critic reviews will average at around 55-65.

-Gameplay will be mediocre and basic.

-Out of this world graphics and presentation.

-The story will be interesting, but the campaign will be on the short side.

DAY 1 purchase for me, not kidding, I love some good cinematic gaming.

One more thing, I expect it to sell pretty well. It's coming out at a good time to get a lot of attention and if Sony can get a good commercial out that makes it clear that what's being shown is gameplay it'll move a lot of copies.

Overhyped is one of the last words I would use to describe this game.

This was one of my main points as well. Ready at Dawn were arguable the best developer on PSP.

As it turns out, you probably won't be doing much "gaming" with The Order. More watching than playing

I think it will be another game like Uncharted that has mediocre gameplay but regardless people will love it and call it a great game because of the graphics/characters/story/other non-gameplay stuff.

I feel like it'll have a great story and atmosphere with okay gameplay. It's totally getting eaten alive by critics though unfortunately.

It will probably be a gorgeous but very mediocre game.

Meanwhile, many will praise it more than it deserves because it is an exclusive. And many others will trash it more than it deserves for the exact same reason.

Hard say. The very vocal, anti-shooter contingent on GAF will hate it. Same with the 'open world or bust' crowd.

Outside of that:

  • Game is going to need a lot of marketing to get those sales. The our own RAD GAFer has hinted that we'll be seeing more of the game very soon (probably GDC), but it needs a big public move to get more than just enthusiasts on board.
  • Game has a strong visual element to where those who value that will jump in and be pleased.
  • Hard to say on gameplay. Some of the gunplay sounds interesting, but we haven't seen much outside of corridor shootouts with brain dead A.I. The recent leak of footage around the time of PSX better highlighted the combat, but was still limited in scope and didn't take advantage of the more experimental/unique weapons. Could go one way or another. At the very least it'll be competent.
  • Story seems interesting and well presented, so those who play games with a preference to narratives look to walk away pleased.

It's just too early to say. Should have made this thread a couple weeks prior instead of a whole month before there is even any marketing out there.

I'm really looking forward to it and i know i will enjoy it whatever the reviews say because i love third person action games and this seems to have alot of interesting elements to it that i really like (monsters, mythology, horror, stealth, cool weapons). From the footage i have seen it's the best looking game i have ever seen as well.I'm pretty sure the game just doesn't preview well, but taken as a whole will be an excellent experience.

As someone who absolutely loves steampunk I pretty much immediately lost interest when I heard it's going to be a linear TPS and everything I've seen since just looked gorgeously average.

So all in all I think the game will end up as utterly mediocre.

It has ace graphics, a solid-looking setting and characters, and fun-enough looking TPS. I am in. It could easily be PS4's Ryse. I am hoping it is a bit less linear though. Visually, it looks even better than Ryse. Will be the best looking game on any platform when it is realised in my opinion.

I think the visuals and presentation will be praised, maybe even the gunplay, but the value for the money won't be there and the QTEs don't provide a meaningful gameplay experience. I see it getting a 7 or a 7.5/10 average.

I'm hoping it's all around great, though. It's still pretty hard to tell.

I'm optimistic. I'm not sure how the critical consensus will be but I'll be happy as long as it has solid gears combat and a decent horror vibe.

I expect to have my most immersive experience yet on my PS4.

Graphics that can be rivaled by very few games, diverse and punchy weapons, and a sound track that seems to amplify the games tone.

Im looking forward to a single player focused experience as well. I'm one of the people that loved Wolfenstein for that.

Only a little over a month left, I'm ready!

You can have a wholly unique setting for a third person shooter and still be generic visually

I could see generic being lobbed at the gameplay but the visuals? Not in the slightest. Be it tech or art, this game is top notch visually.

We haven't seen the more open areas, the Lycans battles, the exploration parts, the mysteries solving etc..

And I'm pretty sure it won't be a short game either (for what it is)

We'll see February 20th.

Probably much the same as other story-based single player games turn out. It'll be all the rage for about a week or two then fall off the Earth after everyone beats it and moves on.

Recent previews seem to be generally positive, but high 70s would not surprise me either if the game takes control away too often, which would surely be complained about.

To me, I think failing a QTE with a game over would be detrimental. In games like Heavy Rain, the game adapts to your inputs, regardless of if you fail them or not. That doesn't seem to be the case here, and I can see that annoying people.

On one hand, QTE needs to be challenging or else it will feel like uninspired filler. On the other, if you can fail with QTEs, and if the game doesn't adapt to mistakes and just presents a game over screen, then they can't be so intense, or else people will fail often. I am mostly curious to see how QTE is in that regard.

Everything about the shooting and cover look solid though, at least in the latest previews, and I hope there is some lore exploration, even if it's just picking up notes or something, because the world is interesting to me.

How is this game overhyped? Every The Order thread I've seen on GAF is filled with negativity, same with the YouTube videos, nothing but negative comments.
