Do you feel that the PS3 has too many multiplayer shooter games?

I recently ran into this problem when the summer drought caught on and was staring at my shelf wanting to play a multiplayer game.

First Person
Exclusive:
Killzone 2
Resistance 2
and others (Punisher etc.)

Non-exclusive:
Battlefield: BC
Battlefield 1943
CoD 4: Modern Warfare
CoD 5: World at War

Third Person
Exclusive:
Warhawk
SOCOM: Confrontation
upcoming Uncharted 2

Non-exclusive:
GTA IV

I say this because well when you think first person shooter on XBOX, you think Halo or (depending on where you stand) CoD. For third person, Gears immediately comes to mind.

Which franchise do you play on the PS3?

Title should say PS360.

And the answer has been yes for years.

And that's only a "yes" in the sense that there aren't enough multiplayer games of other genres.

And there still are people playing R1 :lol I'm not sure if it's a big problem anyway, I mostly play Killzone and R2, and I never have a problem to find a game. I'm not sure if you can blame the PS3 for having too much great games to play :lol

If anything it's better, you have more chances to find a game that suits you well, if you have an Xbox and don't like Halo and Gears, you're pretty fucked up.

No.

Why is that too many?

Well maybe also I feel its a branding issue. With that many highly marketed multiplayer shooter games on the PS3, there isn't a specific game that we flock to. Unlike of course MS with Halo or Gears.

Too many fighters are coming out I hate video games.
Too many rpgs on the ds I hate handhelds.
Too many platformers are coming out I hate the NES.

I never perceived any genre as too many just how many I want to buy or not buy.

I got grudge sucked!
Maybe for the hardcore nihono-philes.

Seriously though, FPS and 3rd person shooter games are currently all the rage, especially now that online console gaming is pretty mainstream. Soon it'll tire out and pass on like every other tired genre before it. Only the niche and truly superb will remain.

Oh this is the point you were trying to make?

Dumb.
I don't want to "flock" to anything.

I think the problem is not enough diversity. I don't care that there are a lot of shooters, I care that there isn't a lot of everything else.

Yah I would say they don't have too many multiplayer shooter games, there are only too many if you start to see empty games and not because the game sucks. So far the only game I have a hard time finding other people to play with is Calling All Cars which I really love but at least there is 4 player split screen. For first or third person shooters I'm always able to find games so I don't think there are too many etc.

You forgot Uncharted.

And why not? Shooters are the most common genre these years. Everyone wants a piece of the cake. Hell, even the Wii is having a decent number of shooters.

It has enough shooting franchises to be able to offer something to everyone - from people who just want to play Call of Duty with their friends for an hour each day, to people who want to invest some serious time into games with very deep clan system implementation (Killzone and SOCOM come to mind).

I personally play Killzone and CoD4 mostly, though i sometimes get bored and boot up SOCOM or Resistance.

Multiplayer shooters are very popular. The market will determine when there are too many and publishers will respond in kind. Just like it does with every genre throughout history.

What? Why do you care about branding? That's Sony's problem if you want to call it that. Just enjoy the games.

Oh, and there's plenty of people playing even the obscure games on Live. All we get to see is the top 10.

Does Safeway have too many kinds of soda? Does Walmart Supercenter have too many different kinds of wine? Are there too many magazines to choose from at Barnes & Noble? Does Hollywood Video stock too many movies?

More variety is good. More of 'em, especially the Playstation ones, need co-operative play as a form of online multiplayer though. I mostly play a lot of the better ones for the campaigns.

Agreed! For me, more quality platforming games would be nice, but I don't want to deny others the selection they have in genres they prefer. Different strokes for different folks.

Nope. And this is sorta a weird genre mix you have. GTA IV is a shooter? Under this, Ratchet should also be in there, when it's a mix of shooting and platforming.

Uncharted, Ratchet, GTA IV are more action-adventure games.

I play a lot of them.

I think the problem is not enough diversity. I don't care that there are a lot of shooters, I care that there isn't a lot of everything else.

Sorta debatable. Folklore, Flow, Linger in Shadows...the RPGs I can agree with pretty easily.

Yes.

Certainly better now than the early days where Haze is the only option available :lol

More variety is good despite the oversaturation if you will :)

If NeoGAF can't have too many bad PS3 threads than surely the PS3 can't have too many shooters?

Console gaming is driven by the masses and if you don't like what the masses like you're going to run into a lot of games that aren't your speed.

@ OP: I don't think most people bought GTA IV for the multiplayer

In general: The more games of all types the merrier I say.

Certainly too many shooters, but then I don't like shooters and we're in an era where shooters dominate.

Given the overlap with he 360, I'd rather see Sony leave those kinds of games for third parties and use their resources on other stuff.

No because I don't think the PS3 has enough quality MP shooters.

If its a multiplatform game I will almost always buy the 360 version simply because they are usually better plus all my online/real life friends game on the 360. And Live.

So that really only leaves exclusives for PS3 and I am in the minority I guess of not being too impressed with what PS3 has to offer in that regard. I bought my PS3 the day I bought KZ2, it was ok. Not much staying power though. I haven't played R2 but the demo for the first game was absolutely horrible.. completely turned me off from ever wanting to try the franchise, really. But I guess I should give R2 a shot.

I almost bought Crash Commandos but I heard there is not much of an online community left.

Wait, what's this ? PS3 in the same sentence as 'too many games'?

headexplodes.gif

I think there are too many FPS/Shooters on PS360

How is that too much? and what are the "and others"?

basically take resistance 1/2 and put gears 1/2, remove kz2 and put halo 3 and...yep 360 has the same or more :confused

Red Faction and Killzone 2. I'd play Halo 3 and Gears 2 online if I could ever get a solid connection to a host.

That list is not what I call massive.. you are missing a few plus someone should compare it with the 360.. far more shooters going somewhat strong over there. It is the most popular online type game console wise so the user base should be able to handle it.

It has a few but none of them are worth playing, to me. Shooters are my favourite genre and I hated Killzone 2's multiplayer. Had Socom for a while but was pushed out due to the elitist community. Had Resistance 1 but hated the art style whilst finding the game completely unoriginal. Finally the polar opposite of quality in terms of multiplayer shooters is present on my 360. For this reason my PS3 is turning into my singleplayer box. I have nothing wrong with that, it has some quality games.

Absolutely not. In fact they're the only games that have actually benefited from the increased power of these consoles. As opposed to something like the jrpg which people keep crying for.

I didn't really liked killzone 2, if you had a 360 why did you buy a ps3 for a fps?:/ uncharted, infamous, mgs4, a shit load of psn games are all miles above killzone 2 in My opinion. The resistance franchise is not my cup of tea either.

I don't know. I don't own a PS3 and wouldn't buy one if it had 100 more multiplayer shooter games as I have access to more than enough of those on the PC.

yay

I have resigned myself to the fact that I am a multiplayer shooter kind of gamer. I wanted to broaden my gaming horizons but I am always coming back to shooting people in the face. Really, I should save myself a lot dough this fall and just buy Uncharted 2 and MW2 and call it a day. I won't even finish the other games.
