No Man's Sky - August 9, 2016

I'm ok with the delay. It's not the end of the world for me. Yeah, it was disappointing but I would much rather have a solid game at launch versus a buggy/glitchy game put out too soon.

I'm still excited as ever for it. It's still one of the reasons I got a ps4 in the first place. And I'm still getting it day one.

Thanks for the responses. I see where you both are coming from, but personally it just worries me that a delay is necessary to polish up stuff. Especially since the delay is so last-minute.

It may very well still be a good game. And if it is, the reviews will still say that and I'll still buy it. But last-minute delays like this one simply worry me.

Sean made another tweet an hour ago that might alleviate some of your concern:

Night y'all! Thanks for the kind words. Wrapping up a 35 hour coding weekend, and feeling fresh. Good things are happening

Huh? I just received an email from Amazon UK. New estimated arrival date for my order of NMS: November 14 - November 16. What's going on?

The center of the galaxy will just be a sun surrounded by planets players will all meet up and eventually treat as "home". From there, you can re-experience the whole game again but this time with plenty of other players, travelling together or in groups to the outside of the galaxy again, simply because everyone will be there.

Done. This was my theory back when we first talked about it and I'm sticking to it.

They just emailed me a second update and have moved it to the 10th of August, maybe us UK'ers are getting it the same day as Europeans now?

Hopefully this means they might add even more music to the game.
I believe the OST is set in stone (in terms of tracks on the album). The idea then was to work all the individual elements of those tracks into the procedural system. And you just reminded me - a month after pre-orders opened, that work was still in progress:

When it comes to the procedural elements, did that change how you approached writing the music?

Shrewsbury: We’re actually working on that now with Paul. We’re taking the sessions from the record, which were mixed and mastered some time ago, and we’re diving back into those and pulling elements out, and then re-recording more variation, more complimentary sounds

The Verge, April 21

This makes me wonder if the "key moments" needing polish (mentioned in Sean's delay announcement) are soundtrack related.

Here's a new screenshot for No Man Sky, pretty.

I really really want to get on the hype train for this but I was burned so badly by spore, cautious optimism is the best I can do.

You're correct to be cautious. Game is going to surprise a lot of people by how repetitive/boring it will be. The backlash is going to be great.

lmao. Boring for people who can only play games that tell them what to do or accomplish in a linear/scripted fashion.

I cant wait to just explore and find planets and eventually get to the center of the universe and along the way find weird creatures and landscapes. Thats what im looking for this game to deliver and how can that be boring if thats what its about i dont know man.

Cautious optimism is good, with any game really, hyped or not.

But look at it this way, No Man's Sky has nothing to do with Spore or its creators.

If this is true, then HOLY FUCK. The central planets will be completely populated by tens of millions of players using it as a social hub. The game then becomes an MMO of sorts and you can take friends back to the planets you already discovered. Stupifying amazing if true, but I'm still looking forward to the game even if it's not.

Man if the game DOES do something like this. It would be pretty damn awesome. It would make sense as you progress your character evolves into higher levels of sentience to travel the universe to that point. Its going to be fun to see what all goes down.

outdated info, but Sean Murray talked about it not being an MMO; and that the player will travel around with a lobby capable for hosting just a few players. Maybe things have changed but I wouldnt count on it..

If we were to make a game where we synchronized every player, what they were doing with every other player, then that would be impossible and no one has ever done that. What we can do is, like many games that you have at the moment, where you are flying around with an open lobby. People are coming into that lobby and leaving it – like if you play Watch Dogs or something like that. Effectively, we have players joining your discrete space. We're not trying to make an MMO where you can play with literally 60,000 people on screen. We handle the case like where other people can fly past in your game or that you can bump into other players in the game.

But that's okay for us because it will never happen. I guess the whole of the entire community could organize to go to one specific spot and then they would find that they weren't all there at the same time. .

True it's got nothing to do with spore really aside from the big concepts. But in my mind if Will Wright couldn't pull of a game with this kind of universe sized scope and make it interesting/compelling, what hope does any dev have? It's really hard to imagine anyone making a game with this level of ambition/size and knocking it out of the park. I sure hope they do but i'm not gonna bank on it with my hype levels.

We cynical and jaded now
He's right. But those who complain will be the only ones to blame. These guys are not lying to anyone and they've repeatedly established what the whole game is about. If you buy this game at a full price and then drop it a few hours in because it's boring you're an idiot and you didn't inform yourself properly before dropping the 60 bucks or you didn't have very realistic expectations in the first place. It's just Noctis IV with a facelift. You either like the concept or not, but don't pretend it was supposed to be anything else.

I've been excited for the game since the very first reveal, watched every interview and even joined the Reddit community for it before they went batshit insane. What you say has always been in the back of my mind. The game is very niche and after the novelty of 18 quintillion planets wears off I think a lot of people are going to be upset. I'll be happy to be wrong if it turns out I am.

I'm a little worried that this game is gonna suck, but Amazon does new games for $48 when you have a Prime account. It's so tempting.

This will be a cool game to play for an hour every once in a while. Nothing wrong with that.

Hmm, I have a feeling this will be a game you'll say "I'll just play for an hour" but it will have the "just 1 more planet to visit", "just 1 more trade to make", "just 1 more animal to discover", "just 1 more mineral to mine", just 1 more hill to peak over to see what's over there", etc etc.

Yeah, I think that's how they built it. To give you a consistent urge to nudge forward again and again and overcome small challenges/roadblocks.

Over time that will add up to huge progression in terms of character, politics, skill and world.
