No Man's Sky |OT| Hello Worlds.

Put a few hours into the PC version today. I seem to be one of those lucky people who've had very little trouble with the game--the occasional tearing in the form of flickering bands across the screen are about all I've seen in terms of issues, and performance seems good.

Still on my starting planet, now just hopping from place to place to see what's what. Exosuit and ship space are quickly becoming problems, though. I discovered a shipwreck and decided to swap my ship, only to find that because the new ship had more modules in it than my starter ship, I couldn't move as much stuff over, and thus didn't have as many materials to repair the new ship as I thought. Also, is there any difference between ships besides number of slots, or is that really the only functional criterion that distinguishes them?

The way your relationship with the procedural algorithm changes as you play the game is really interesting.

At first, it's mindblowing. Absolutely mindblowing that an algorithm could create such a realistic planet-sized space for you to discover. And not just one, millions.

Then you get used to it. The animals aren't that impressive, each planet is just one biome. The seams start to show. After about 5 or 6 planets you wonder if you've seen it all.

But what's interesting is that AFTER this low point, once you've 'seen behind the curtain', the game then is able to surprise you by doing things you've suddenly assumed it couldn't because you hadn't seen them before.

After seeing 15 planets without proper oceans, I thought that wasn't possible. But I just found my idyllic planet - green grass, blue skies, massive oceans and coastlines you can follow in your ship. Then I found a nice beach with a base in waist-deep water, and off the beach was a sea cave. Under the water was a stunning diversity of plant life. Just 'being there' was enough to entertain me for 30 minutes to an hour, whatever about the gameplay loop. (The fact that the place was stuffed with graviton spheres didn't hurt.)

Then the next planet I went to had a massive crater. Another thing I'd assumed the game couldn't create. I parked my ship on a floating island so I would be forced to explore, and the next hour was a fascinating trek to try and find a spaceport.

Just now I found my first planet with megafauna - massive dinosaur like creatures. Hilariously, they were surrounded by bouncing pineapple creatures. It's once your trust in the ability of the algorithm to surprise you hits rock bottom because you feel like you've probably 'seen it all'... that's when it gains the ability to surprise you and the pleasure of exploration returns to the game.

The gameplay is pretty fucking dire, but this is one of the most memorable experiences I've ever had with a game. Also, just got my AtlasPass. Finally!
Where'd you get your AtlasPass?

I love this idea, thank you.

A little fluff between the ears never did any harm...
I wish I could find previous systems I've visited. The second system had this moon with huge floating islands. It was so gorgeous standing in one with the host planet taking up the whole sky. I can't believe I hadn't taken a screen shot. I never even explored it much. I wanted to get all the other planets documented before going back, but I forgot. Colon open parenthesis.

Is it just the multi tool that requires those highlighted technologies to be next to each other for their bonuses or whatever?

I'm looking to buy a ship and it has some quirky spacing of the inventory. So I'm worried that future upgrades will require that on the ship and I'll be screwed.

What is everyone's advice when making a ship purchase decision?

If you're not too far away already, on the Galactic Map, press up, then (if the servers are working) right on the dpad to cycle through.

Your instincts are pretty much right, the initial layout of a ship informs its upgrade potential, you have to kind of plan around it.

However, definitely bear in mind that you're not going to be hanging onto that ship forever, and you'll be dismantling any tech you install as you transfer. Don't hesitate too much if you need an upgrade and see something you like, because it won't be the last time.

Had that happen to me, think mine was a bit taller. Was fun cutting holes through the tower and boosting up bit by bit.

Ok, sorry to reply to this again, but I went to the space station, and just landing there does nothing :( Can anyone help figure out how to repair my ship?
I honestly have no idea, it's always either been I completely die or I don't lol. I just remember one time I didn't back when I first started, and all I remember doing is docking at the space station, selling some stuff, and then it's health was back. Maybe make sure your shields are repaired first? Not sure, sorry :/

yeah, just landing doesn't do the trick
If you continue speaking with an attendant in the space station you should get an option for repair. However, you always start a session with full ship health so quitting and logging back in works too.

I'm scared! What should I dooooo

Looking at a 1.5 million ship with 24 slots and decent weapons. I'm still using my starting ship.

Keep Warping forward. Just got mine after passing the first anomaly
Atlas ship
. Once you warp, you will find another anomaly
(a circle ship, with Nada and Polo. Polo is the one that gives you the recipe for the AtlasPass)

I dreamt of distant planets last night. Half-awake I scanned alien life forms and scavenged to survive. I stood alone on mineral-rich rock deposits and twisted my mouth to utter words in strange languages. I felt perfectly alone and content in my adventures amongst the stars.

This game is deeply embedded in my psyche and I'm super glad it exists. Thanks HG!

Ugh. Hit a "wall". I saw an "Atlas Station" marker in space, telling me to go there. I said "In a minute" and went back to exploring planets in that system.

When I realized that's where I needed to go to construct my first Atlas Pass, I went back into orbit to look for it and it was gone.

Damn. Where the hell do I go now??

Anyone?

Played for just under two hours and I still don't know what to make of the game. When I did finally manage to get a nice starter planet, I had fun exploring at first. Lots of interesting terrain on the planet like huge caves and large ravines. Not much alien life around to speak of but plenty of those Sentinel things

What life I did come across seems to do... just about nothing. They wander around. I haven't seen them interacting with each other or doing anything with their environment. It could just be what I've seen so far. I don't know if there are instances of things like this happening.

As is, it seems like there's not a whole lot to do on the planets other than gather things. Exploration doesn't really seem to lead to a whole lot from my experience so far. The terrain still makes me feel like the game would have benefited from another form of travel like a ground vehicle of sorts or a grappling hook even (let me swing around when I'm surrounded by cliffs!). Basically, something to actually let you play with the planet you're on. Were it not for the jetpack jump trick I think I would have a much bigger issue with how slow traversing the planet feels.

Can't say much about the ships so far as I only recently left my starting planet. They feel pretty basic and looking through my ship upgrades, I'm not sure that will be changing soon.

So far the game feels incredibly lifeless, even when you do happen upon alien life. I made it to a space port and there wasn't really anything going on there. Other pilots parked in their ships and a trader or two. I'm wondering if there's anything beyond that.

I'm kind of at that awkward point where playing any further would void my steam refund, but I don't necessarily want to give up on the game either. It's just that my experience so far has been fairly similar to the more negative impressions of the game, which worries me. I'm wondering just how much more there is to this game.

I'm right there with you. I got the hyperdrive and jumped to another planet that looked almost exactly like the first two i was on. Requested a refund after it crashed shortly after. It was also hitching up quite frequently.

You don't use boost power if you're climbing a wall. It's tricky and might still use boost depending on the sloop, but I've climbed huge walls without the boost metre falling off.

Man...I want something like a godzilla sized creature. It's like, c'mon Hello Games, it's a video game - do some crazy shit.

I had hoped for creatures that size to fight in your ship in atmosphere.

One of the most disappointing things to me is how the transition from atmosphere to space is very discrete and not at all natural.

Like, you can't just fly your ship around in atmosphere above the surface freely, you're sort of on rails in a way.

Maybe they can change that someday but you would never be able to do a strafing run on a ground based enemy or base from your ship the way it is now.

The sense of scale is all off when you're in your ship over the planet. It's strange.

I Love this game but I think i need a little help. I have two upgrades too my hyperdrive. I am 35+ hours into the game and im 172000 light years from the center. Every time i warp I get about 300-500 light years closer, sometimes if I can take a straight path 14000. Still Im looking at warping about 300+ more times. Am I doing something wrong?

What do you mean? Of course you can fly at varying heights. Even way up in the atmosphere. Maybe I'm misunderstanding something.

I have no idea what kind of ship to buy, Whats some of the best ships you guys have? Post some pics, and price you payed.

on ps4
Not that far in, paid 2.3mil, doesn't have a super big inventory but I'm loading it all up with weapons and shields anyway.

What you're looking for depends on what you want to do, if you want to prioritize cargo space, a better hyperdrive than you have, pre-installed weapons, etc.

i have a theory about this. I'm not sure but don't think you're doing anything wrong. Just keep heading there for now.

PC port is absolute garbage. How do they get away with this in 2016 after delaying for 3 days and twittering about implementing "features" (aka normal options for a PC game)?

What a joke of a company and game.

You'll have to divert back to your original Atlas Path via Star Map I believe...happened to me too and did the aforementioned - I guess it moves around? Which is why whenever the opportunity presents, I make sure to pop in and say hi thus

Yeah, it seems like every upgrade I get is "already known" but it never shows up. I still don't have the hyperdrive blueprint even though I discovered it like 20 hours in and I have two of the companion units for it, lol. Good thing every ship I've had already had one installed.

Extreme desert planet is a lot of fun. Just running around trying to get enough resources to survive and still do some mining. It had to be here during an extreme storm I finally find some nickel for my hyperdrive upgrade.....

You can either find a black hole or be told where one is to cut down your journey time.
