This is a naive or partial view. Core clock speed isn’t a measure of actual work done. You could program a game for PS4 that causes the power draw/wattage/work done to exceed design limitations, overheat and crash. Even if the console was somewhere cool. Even with fixed clocks.

Fixed clocks do not mean fixed maximum work load. Anyone that has overclocked a modern GPU/CPU knows that you should target maximum power draw with enough cooling to keep it there.

Thank you for your great posts, man. You are a NiceBreathOfTheWild but being humble. We need more of you here!:messenger_clapping:

I am seeing many people saying the ps5 downclocks from 10tf which sounds like the most retarded thing as pretty much every computer device upclocks

But the official ps4 blog states Varaible up to 10tf meaning its base is probably 9tf and it will uplock under load

Anyone able to shed some light?

It could just clock to whatever it needs at the time. So basically if your playing a simple 2D game it could downclock the GPU to around 8TF and when playing highly intensive games it would increase it to 10.3 TFs.

That's my understanding on how it works.

It's basically the opposite. Max clocks will be maintained as long as the power budget is not exceeded. If the power budget is exceeded, either the CPU or GPU (depending on which has the lower workload) is downclocked slightly to compensate.

But what we're talking about when we say loading is more apparent to the eye is what the AVERAGE CONSUMER will see. They may see higher numbers on one, but see instant loading on another and THAT may be seen as more powerful to them. That's the idea, anyway.
So, instant loading versus better graphics? I feel like many people would choose Better graphics but ultimately it comes down to games.

Can't it also reduce clocks when it doesn't need the extra power?

Like when your watching a movie it probable doesn't need the GPU at maximum clock speeds.

depends on the difference between the graphics, no one cares about negligible differences such as blades of grass being more sharper. Most people wont even notice and even DF will have to nitpick at times, that excludes things like LOD and fidelity which PS5 may have an advantage on.

instant loading times however, that's a bit more interesting, people say they don't care but once they get used to such a feature they won't be able to play without it, as steve jobs once said "people don't know what they want unless you show it to them".

That doesn't mean the framerate Will be extremely unstable while playing a game correct?

As in the PS5 will just make the clock speed go up and down like crazy while your playing the game.
Not at all. With SmartShift, power is allocated where it's most needed. And it's not as if the CPU and GPU are constantly under load. Most of the time one of them is doing more work than the other. Doing it this way is actually quite efficient. AMD is using something similar in laptops, but using temperature sensors instead of predefined power tables.

That doesn't sound bad at all. I remember when they announced variable clocks there were people freaking out over it. But once you understand how it works it's actually a good thing.

For how ironic that tweet can be, that's proof it's better to show than tell. People would have realized how disruptive PS5 SSD was if Sony had shown a demo/game much earlier.
For sure. Apparently the UE5 demo was supposed to be shown at GDC along with the Cerny talk, so I wonder why they waited so long to show it, instead of showing it as a part of Road to PS5 or closer to when that was uploaded.

I guess they wanted it to be part.of that summer of games thing.

Textures are also graphics which we know from the demo that PS5 can stream in 8K textures while Xbox being slower might be 4K.

Both will still look great but graphics isn’t as cut and dry as you were suggesting.

Exactly, this is the kind of narrative being set by some and its setting xbox up for a fall IMO.

Weve seen it go from tflops to SSD doesnt matter, then suddenly it does and SFS and bcpack can magically make up for the lack of io hardware etc.

The ssd and io is looking to have a much bigger impact than a lot anticipated, if that results in better quality assets than the most powerful console then oh boy...

I personally think the cpu will be equal as 3.5 vs 3.6 and sony has been very open about tempest power and that'll reduce the cpu load. Xbox less open about their audio hardware and usually when quiet it usually means something.

Also not sure about the cpu needing more usage on xbox side for SSD where ps5 is almost completely taken care of in the io?

Huh? XSX has a hardware decompressor, DMA and a thermal heatsink.... Man you guys are something else.

Loading games is not what I constitute as power and many won’t. Even if I can load a whole world in mere seconds does not
Mean I will have the best visual experience. Both systems will require developers with a keen eye on detail, that’s what’s going to sell consoles.
Loading times will be much more perceivable than a 18% difference in teraflops. It's like when people were struggling to see any difference between 1440p base res on PS4 Pro and 1820p base res op Xbox One X.

Maybe he's talking about what it's missing compared to the PS5s?

I know the only difference isn't just the design of the actual SSD.

Does the Series X has all the hardware that the I/O complex has or something similar?

Except in 3-4 years when games begin to push the CPUs and there is no power budget to steal. Also Sony still won't say what loads besides avx are problematic. If this was awesome they would have charts and talk exact details like the SSD and tempest engine instead they gave a few generic marketing speak terms and nothing else swept under the rug. Ask your self that if it is awesome why no details or talk about it since the initial talk reveal? The SSD and tempest are awesome and non stop talk and we have specs and details not marketing speak. Variable clocks suck no thank you to random performance drops when systems are pushed hard in a few years after cross generation is done.

Cerny said the CPU and GPU will spend the majority of their time at their top clocks so I would assume it sticks to that 10.3 number, I'm sure it only says "up to" because it is variable and they can't give a locked number so they are just advertising it's highest number.

I guess based on that picture. I can't see much games matching the Ice Berg picture unless is a new IP.
If the "insider" is right it couldn't be a new IP, how can you highly anticipate something you never saw before?

Anyone can think of a Sony IP on an icy environment besides HZD's The Frozen Wilds? GOW?

Whats your deal? We havent heard more because they've yet to even have a reveal event, chill out

So, I can assume several videos were made saying how PC's would crush this demo and even a laptop with a mobile NV chip could run this better......I bet there was a storm after this laptop information. Heard lots about mandarin translators too...Tim Sweeny was probably saying, how did these guys get this demo, we never released it to anybody else...….So more fud and made up information......I must say, this generation is the most I've ever seen people peddling so many untruths, it must be something they are defending against so badly....

Its kinda strange people only talke only about the teraflop difference .. which is by itself is significant '' i still belevie the PS5 is a 9 TF mechine''
while ignoring other XSX hardware advantages like :
- 112GB/s higher mem bandwidth
- 3.1GPixels higher fillrate
- 58GTexels higher texture rate
Mark my words .. the XBX will be > 40 % faster

BandWidth requires you to take into account what's using it. The XSX's BW advantage is proportionate to its Compute advantage; and so is unlikely to lend it any further advantage over and above that. It still has a tiny BW per Flop advantage but it is absolutely minuscule. Both boxes are likely a little low on overall bandwidth.

That Pixel Rate assumes the XSX has 80 ROPS, as it currently stands, absolutely nothing points to this other than fake spec sheets. A much fairer and technically-informed -- but still not guaranteed -- assumption based on the nature of AMD GPU's would be it's still 64 ROPS. Giving PS5 a moderately higher Pixel Rate.

You're correct that XSX has a higher Texture Rate.

XSX will be 20% faster wider more powerful in a best case scenario. This will likely result in small resolution differences that will be negated further by reconstruction.

This ideal 20% applies to the GPU CU (ALU, TU, RT), everything else on the PS5 GPU will benefit from a higher clock and the gap will effectively be closed in that respect. Not to mention that tasks less suited to heavy parallelization or high CU interoperability will likely be more efficient on the PS5.

This all FUD campaign is derived from the underwhelming confirmation from the head of xbox studios, Matt Booty, that XSX first party studios won't get next gen exclusives for around 2 years at least, and that PS5 is planning the VERY opposite and will do their best to transfer as much players to PS5 as possible from day one.

As a result of that, if 4-June-2020 packs Sony's hard-hitters (GOW, HZD, Spiderman, etc) and shown with the best graphics/gameplay/presentation then it'll be a staggering jump start for PS5 when it's the most critical time for XSX to pick as much as possible in a predicted lost pursuit.

I highly recommend watching it, he goes through a lot of information especially how next-gen will effect development of games and also the actual workflow of gaming studios because they won't be spending hours on certain tasks they need to do with current gen.

A quote which really stood out to me and really ties into whether this technical demo relied on PS5's SSD I/O. Keep in mind this game development engineer is not even familiar with the PS5 specs.

"Just having to sort through all this data, I'm sure this demo is like hundreds of gigabytes , because there is so much texturing, so much triangles, so just reading that data, it's interesting to look at the PS5 architecture, I'm sure a lot of this is being streamed in from disk (SSD), every frame, that SSD has to be blazingly fast, that relationship between disk and VRAM, has to be really tight and think it has to be specific to this architecture"

Amazing video analysis of the PS5 demo. Thank you for sharing it, man!

Dont miss it guys.

Holy shit, if Silent Hill is really alive, I'll buy a PS5 as soon as possible (if it's exclusive).
Context: This Nitroid, which I don't particularly know, was charging some journalists (or insiders, whichever you prefer) in relation to the fact that they believed / knew that a new Sillent Hill was in production.

The question is who I almost sure is Sony the reasons:

1)Xbox has the game Medium so they probably know that will happens for this reasons this game will exists
2)Konami the only game which can do now are about soccer
3)Japan Studio is too quiet about a AAA game, the closest thing is The Last Guardian

Anyone think we'll get a God of War sequel announcement and trailer during the June 4th event? That would be so crazy! if the game is getting released 2-3 years from now it would make sense for them to release some sort of teaser or confirmation over the next few months.

What they were able to achieve with the PS4 is still pretty insane, no load screens or should I see more secret load screens and there was some crazy action sequences, with the capabilities of next-gen my imagination is going crazy wondering what they'll be able to do accomplish.
I don't expect anything related to God of War until maybe 2022 well maybe 2021 just the announcement.
