The minimum specs for PC games will eventually be a SSD. Sure. And someday a NVMe SSD. But not PCIe Gen4. Not for many years.

I know XSX/S have dedicated decompression blocks, but I'm very curious to see how efficient RTX IO/DirectStorage is when utilizing GPU hardware to accelerate decompression. With Nvidia and MS partnering to build the APIs for this tech, I wouldn't be surprised to see tools being made available for devs to work in something similar for XSX/S if the PC/PS5 advantage is that large.
Would it be worth sacrificing ~2-4 CU's to accelerate the I/O by a factor of 2X?

Im not sure about those second-hand informations but I remember clearly that Cerny told us on "the Road to PS5" that SSD was the most requested feature from developers and how he went from there to achieve the "dream" of 100 times the speed of a traditional HDD.Part of the reason why Sony went with that I/O solution was because of this:

but if its not rdna2 amd tech, so its not under AMD NDA.
So why doesn't sony speak more about it?
I have to say that this guy is a true sony warrior, I remember him from attacking dust golem.
Here, not only he does not address the reasonable points about amd h/w made in the article, but he also gives advice on how to handle such information:

All my phone's have been Xperia, well pretty much everything I have is Sony for good reason. But yes Xperia naming convention is confusing as hell, example I'll be upgrading my phone from Xperia 'XZ1c' to 'Xperia 1 II' ... really nobody would have a bloody clue which is better by the names alone!
BTW anybody looking for the best camera phone and for watching movies take a look at Xperia 1 II, it stands out from the crowd! I'm sure

Im not gonna pretend that know enough to go that indepth into those possibilities. But even if it was possible to redirect CU's from the Series X GPU to accelerate the I/O now with the Series S in the picture, I dont think MS would do it.

It wasn't speed, it was latency they reduced by 100x. The bandwidth is a completely separate advantage the PS5 IO complex has over all the other solutions.

Yeah it was in my wishlist when it only had PS5, Sony XH90 65-85", and Xperia 1 mark II. Now after Sony a7S III had to drop Xperia 1 II and XH90 for the meantime.
Wanted to buy Xperia 10 II instead now but can't find it in Amazon nor BH. Been a Sony phone user since 2005, won't change now even when Xperia branch has left the Middle-eastern market in 2018.

As I said, since he is claiming that somehow sony has a proprietary solution that somehow overcomes known amd h/w limits,
there cannot be an amd NDA on that tech, since it's sony's "proprietary tech".
It would be reasonable to talk about it. Not him, but sony.
His second tweet "teaching" how to deflect such conversations is much more telling about the subject than his first tweet in my opinion, and the reason I pointed it out.

Read again, I never said games need to run at 1080p in XSX, I put the most possible situation, 1800 and 1440, run the numbers again, and tell me what resolution it will left XSS in and think about optimization while you put those numbers...

I cannot provide you with absolute numbers, since there are things in the h/w still not known.
Reasonable numbers would be 1080p on S when 1440p on X
Numbers could be lower IF series S lacks gpu functionality that X has, but that doesn't seem to be the case right now.

No, I get it. You cant just slap a 5GB/s SSD into a console and expect it to actually perform at that level. Adressing latency, the 6 priority levels are all measurements for that.

I think he is saying SmartShift is proprietary and works differently than generic boosting on PC, or implying that Sony and AMD have further customised it to work in some way. Who is to say that this implementation is not RDNA2 or perhaps something that will eventually end up in RDNA3. I remember someone speculating that Smartshift was offered to Xbox but they declined it for some reason.
Regardless, whenever someone says something as stupid as developers will turn the TFs on the PS5 down to 9, so they can use more CPU, it is best to not engage with them as they clearly haven't watched the Cerny Road to PS5 and/or have no concept of how game developers work.

It has comparative benchmarks for the two gpus in ALL resolutions.
so for example,
metro exodus, ultra settings
2080ti @1440p 60-75fps
1060ti @1440p 30-40fps or 47-52fps @1080p
and then of course you have other options, like running ultra settings on one gpu, high/very high on the other, checkerboard, etc.
as you can see, actually its not so difficult to not be concerned

actually there were graphs in articles showing that if xbox had used that technology, it could boast over 14tf.
jason ronald had said that they went for fixed clocks because a) their prformance target was reached and b) variable frequencies are not the best solution for devs.
about your second point, Richard Leadbetter in his ps5 deep dive had said that multiple devs he spoke to, they are using a profile with cpu frequencies way down in order to sustain the high gpu frequency. iirc, he commented that this is very ok for now, because games all are cross gen, but he wondered how this will pan out as we move on and more cpu power is needed as we break from jaguar ties, or something in this manner.

Unreal engine is work in progress, epic has clearly stated that they need to work and optimize until a steady 60fps is a given.
and most probably, by the time they have reached that target more optimizations will be done also. those UE5 engineers in china talked about that in detail.
plus, we already know that it is very scalable.
