GAF is the only one that I use. Always had a good time on here and love seeing what everybody else is playing especially in the 'What are you playing' thread. It's opened my eyes to some absolute gems that I've ended up picking up myself.

I've seen the OP of that thread make quite a few questionable statements in various threads there the past couple of months when it comes to Sony in gaming discussion topics. Now here's a quote from an actual DICE developer in the same thread:
Now, if you're supposed to be a responsible individual in ongoing gaming discourse, I don't know why you would stoop to a talking point that's been weaponized for console war fodder, providing no evidence as to how your point is actually in any way potentially factual, and would fall into a macro pattern of discourse which you know you've seen weaponized for at least the past year now.
They also had a couple of threads this past week on their thoughts on the business direction for Sony and Microsoft. Now, they seem to be a lot more enthused with Microsoft's direction, but if you actually looked at the rationale behind some (well, a lot) of the posts for both, a lot of the rationale was based on BS.
Just taking a guess here but I think a lot of the exaggerated hostility from that place towards a certain brand of late come from a rather banal email leak, and they're just using that to contrive things to be upset about, a lot of which are easily disputable with actual information and level-headedness.
I'm frankly quite shocked at how uncivil gaming discussion on the other site has gotten these days; they lack balance, taste, and humility.

yeah it is buy it's not really saying much. i'd say this is the best place to talk about games without having such a negative response. i mean if you go to resetera and say something they don't like then you're banned. on reddit if you say something that they don't agree with then your post is downvoted until it basically disappears. i used to go on gamefaqs years ago and that was awful. i don't know about discord it's not really my thing and i don't really know anywhere else to talk about games online.
i know forums aren't as popular as they used to be but i feel like recently the activity on the site is slowing down. maybe i visit too much
but it's like the same content stays on the 1st page for so long and there's not a lot of rotation. of course people will post new stuff and there is activity in those threads it but overall there doesn't seem to be as many topics. if you go into the communities/off topic it's more noticeable. you quickly find threads that haven't had responses in weeks Maybe i'm imagining it but it makes me sad to think the site might be "dying". also with the post a while back about trying to fund the site it makes me worrie it might not be here much longer. of course a lot of people responded with buying gold and some changes were made to advertising i think.

There are posts there now at the bottom that have replies over one hour old. Gaf in its heyday had 'a moment ago' for at least a page and a half. Refresh and the entire first page would change. Gaf was a behemoth until some asshats with an agenda caused the big split. And for what? Two smaller forums, the offshoot with worse problems than the original GAF with even more unhinged mods. ERA is slow, gaf is a little slower but is less littered with reaction posts but has more console warring. Pick your poison I guess.
Generally forums have slowed anyway. Reddit is good for specific info on games at a per sub level but most of the generic ones get overcome with memes etc. I kind of feel whereas GAF was the main source for everyone at one point, everyone is now using mutliple sources themselves. Gaf/era are just part of a main course.
Can we go back? I think it depends on the changes coming to twitter and social media. If people get fed up with the fake news, click bait and cockteasing by prominent individuals then maybe. But on the whole I also think we have less anonymous interaction from devs and industry figureheads like the old days.

Which makes one realize... If every forum out there is running on what is essentially the same architecture (ie Xenforo), then how can a certain forum (ie Neogaf) differentiate itself from other forums?
Because by and large... The users aren't really all that different.
My main hangout is Reddit... Not for the gaming discussion. But for everything that isn't gaming.
As some people here have said, I don't think Neogaf will ever be "great" again. Not if it carries on like a conventional forum. But it might be able to up it's numbers if it tries something different. Something that attracts users in a way which the other forums aren't able to attract.
My idea would be "exclusive articles and content".
Incorporate a section that acts like all the big name gaming sites. Where you see exclusive articles. That have been written by some of the industry greats. Stuff like that would get Neogaf name-checked more often. And also allow it to bolster its reputation.
But that requires money.

Yeah, no. If I were to start using the ignore feature, I'd never be finished. I've been here a short while, watching the "discussions" you guys have and I have to say, I dislike most of you. Your fake concern and supposedly sincere takes on everything make me gag.
The only thing this place is good for is as a news aggregator of sorts, as people here post news within 3 seconds of it happening. But other than that, from what I can tell most of the active posters are: 1. American and 2. 15 physically or mentally.
The only constructive criticism I can offer is segregate the forum into 3 gaming areas. Playstation, PC & XBOX. That way at least you'd stay out of eachothers way and stop polluting this place with your piece of shit hot takes.

You are not wrong, but most is a bit harsh. I think it's "only" around 30 people who are endlessly concerned, disappointed, sarcastic or making "harmless" jokes and spam lol emojis on news. I was a fan of the ignore list, but those are also the guys who desperately comb the internet for good and especially negative news and when you got them all on ignore you miss out some news and it sometimes is tough to follow coversations. So i now only ignore the worst of them. Not perfect, but much better.
Console areas wouldn't work, because most pretend to own both consoles, they are just much more concerned about one of them.

I really hope they do a Twitch and or Youtube-tied NeoGAF channel and just let posters who also create content stream & post videos to said channels. There's plenty of monetization and ad revenue opportunities in both of them.
The other place has really become a really unpleasant space even for regular gaming discussion that isn't politically charged. So much pessimism and anger mixed with narcissism. I kind of feel there's a real mean-spiritedness nature to gaming discussion over there these days, not to mention hyper disingenuousness. Versus here where in most gaming topics when someone gets mad, they just make a comedy of themselves and you're free to engage with and even joke around with them.
Also I think being able to keep discussions open and honest (unless someone's doing some extreme console warring BS over a long-term...but even that is rather amusing compared to some stuff on the other forum) is a good thing. Most people are well-intentioned, if someone's being a real dickhead you can just put them on Ignore, and generally there's not a lot of high-authority types trying to control the flow of conversation (on the other site you'll regularly see mods and even administrators insert themselves in ongoing discussions, even rather banal gaming topics, in ways where their input is obviously intended to police and control the range of discussion, where you basically feel like you have to "walk on eggshells" the entire time especially if there's a dominating perspective in the thread).

NeoGAF should lean into that. The NBA learned that growing the stars/players would help grow the brand. Evilore should David Stern the valued posters here somehow.

Now being serious, that is the problem, people take things way too seriously and makes words to personal. There's always a need for a balance, it is ok to show you are passionate, if someone is derailing the thread if that poster is ignored (nobody replies to his post) the thread will resume to the topic. Also nobody is perfect, we all written things that we regret or wish we written it in a better way.
I do not know if my method is good but I just view everything lighthearted and in a humor way but that is the thing, I am not perfect and I think nobody is, also everyone is different so I understand people will have different opinions etc. That is why a forum exists - exchange of ideas... If everyone agreed on everything threads would not even reach page 2.

Gonna put my tinfoil hat on but i think there are astrotrufers on era, some of the posts are just so blatant. If any one remembers early last gen astroturfers got caught on gaf and reddit shilling for xbox trying to change the narrative, would not be surprised if they are out in force again.
