Phil Spencer: announcement this week

My expectation is that they will restructure their business to be a bit more like Sony, which will reflect parts of the gaming business having an Xbox focus and parts having a wider focus

For Sony they currently have SIE. Under that is essentially PlayStation Studios which is the first party for PS5, and Bungie as a self publishing multiplatform entity

For Microsoft they will restructure to effectively allow Activision and Bethesda to act as independent publishing arms that are multiplatform and report into Microsoft rather than Xbox Game Studios. XGS will still have a focus on Xbox console exclusives. This will free up those two parts of the company from being tied to Xbox sales and subscriber numbers and to focus on driving revenue

Maybe they want "Xbox" to only refer to the console?

This is a stretch, every dev is competing and trying to outdo each other. Gears, BOTW, Halo, Pokémon, etc. There are many games that has been influencial for other devs. The Insomniac leaks also had Hellblade 2 as the visual target they were trying to reach. MS has had TLOU2 as their target. Competition is always great for us consumers. But whatever we’ll see what happens, I’m more concerned over price increases and a lower attempt to have big PS+ releases and longer generations etc.

The more independent they operate the better positioned to sell off the console business if Amazon or Apple wants to take a shot at Sony.

Or maybe this is part of the whole OEM strategy? Can't believe Microsoft is just going to try and sit on this for a week.

Ain't real according to Jez, but it is still hilarious

Also hilarious that before Jez received clarification, he was rationalizing the change. lol

Xbox PR is really in crisis mode. Their direct stream was not even 3 weeks ago. How do we get from Hellblade 2 and Awowed to the end of the Xbox name as a credible thing? I can't imagine what E3 period will be for them.

That's a great video. It starts with the culture.

For me it's a great shame that they have decided to also infect fans of their products with the same kind of mentality. Hence the general obsession with Sony, the constant blame for Sony for everything that happens to the Xbox business, and the eternal classic SonyToo™.

And the reason they've done it? It prevents them from having to be accountable for their fanbase.

I'm listening to this Timdog right now. He sounds like an idiot.
Turn it off, you'll be dumber for the experience. I've checked when you registered, think you missed his tenure here. Absolute clown and to think he was in his 60s at the time.
Isn't he the guy who followed someone to GameStop?
It was best buy I believe, there's probably a video linked here somewhere.

Didn't this already happen when Phil was promoted a couple of years ago?

Xbox is just the hardware now.

If they formally separate MS Gaming and Xbox brands into software and hardware, where does that leave paid online access? Would they drop the requirement for paid online? Require a MS Gamepass sub for online on the Xbox? Or make paid online separate from Gamepass?

No, they gonna keep gouging the people that are left buying the console.

Eh, Microsoft's library of games differentiate themselves really well against Sony's exclusives though.

Sony tends to focus on third person, story driven, high-fidelity titles. Whereas Microsoft has really leaned into open world games, Western RPGs, first-person experiences, and multiplayer games.

I could definitely see games like Forza Horizon, Avowed, Halo, Hi-Fi Rush, Sea of Thieves, and yes, even Starfield, etc... doing quite well on Sony platforms because they actually fill genres that Playstation-only gamers don't have wide access to.

Returnal
Gran Turismo 7
Kena: Bridge of Spirits
MLB The Show
Destiny 2
Rachet & Clank: Rift Apart
Astro's Playroom

and if you want to include 3P....

Sonic
Minecraft
Roblox
Fortnite
Harry Potter
Street Fighter
Tekken
Resident Evil
Final Fantasy

...like can we stop using talking points and start using actual sales data here?

No kidding, going from Indiana Jones hype to this mess is a historical failure I have never witnessed before, and I’ve been doing this for over 40 years now. Can’t think of a more abrupt brand suicide. And they’re doing this without any interaction at all with their customers. Silence. Phil was literally playing Diablo while the house was burning down. No wait then he actually came out and said we hear you let’s talk more next week okay thanks bye. 🤦‍♂️

Above the "developer level" where all decisions are actually made about scope, budget, release timing, crunch, its of course going to matter. Uncharted wouldnt even exist unless they were trying to chase Gears.
I mean, Forza wouldn't be what it is without chasing Gran Turismo. This is how competition works.

Doesn't mean their words have no validity.

In the meantime, they said nothing wrong.
It goes back to Mario, Sonic and Crash. Games will still have to compete but I could see decreased scope, budget, crunch, number of releases. Most of these decisions will be at the corporate level, not the developer culture level. The bigger issue will be system policies and pricing.

PlayStation developers disagree and have for years. They've been given the greenlight to create what they want, and when their games start taking a nosedive in quality, then we can start to wonder what is up.

Totally your right to think whatever you want. I definitely wont be investing in an even more complacent and dominant Sony.
