Phil Spencer: announcement this week

It would be hilarious if the business update event is going to be during the SuperBowl. I mean it IS next week.

Typical Phil. That's not the rumors they need to address. The rumors are about some XGS games going multiplatform to PlayStation and Nintendo.

Rumor: "XGS games to go multiplatform."
Phil: "No, we won't stop making consoles."

and the crowd goes wild.
Not to defend him, but this was a internal meeting. Not for us, but for Xbox employees, who do it for a living. Telling them that yes, Xbox is still in the business, that they don't have to fear for their futures is more important than learning if game X or Y will go to PS5. He did the same a few years ago, and said this to Eurogamer in 2016:
The work that happens month after month the team does is driven by thousands of people who are engaged and believe in the plan, and I don't know how to be a leader for that organisation if I can't communicate with them openly on what's happening. I don't think our team leaked, but doing things like that, if things leak, I will take the leak over not being able to be open and transparent with the team that's actually going to do the work, because their hearts and minds are infinitely more important to our long-term success than a couple weeks or days before our announcement, a leak going out.
We can laught all we want and I think like you about this subject and many others, but the employees don't have to suffer from Microsoft PR debacle. He had to say something, and we do not have the full detail of what he said. Still, the Forbes article have a great question in it:
How do you even get to the place where you have to ensure Xbox employees you’re still making Xboxes? This is part of the idea that Microsoft is going to continue to put increasingly less focus on console sales, even more than they have already, in favor of an “Xbox Everywhere” philosophy. That has included console, PC and mobile devices that can play via the cloud, but the rumors are that to some extent, that will now include PlayStation and Nintendo devices as well.
How do you even get to the place where you have to ensure Xbox employees that? And when we are at that point, can they even recover?

Phil Spencer had a meeting with all Xbox staff last week where he assured everybody that Xbox was still in the business of making consoles with no plans to stop.

Good, the Xbox brand needs to hang around a bit longer, I like their hardware personally

I retired 23 years ago at the age of 33 and currently residing in our winter home in Jupiter Fl

Wow, that's very early. I belong to an early retirement forum, and the average age of retirement there is about 55. I pulled the plug myself at 57.

Anyway, 33 that's great. You must've cashed in on something. :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:

I was a professional athlete but back then not everyone made generational type of money so literally every dime I made went into investment properties and land which has since exploded since retiring from Baseball

One hell of a climb down incoming which could have been handled by a tweet but they will create a drama and make a meeting only to say nothing.

A blog post with details and a statement or two would have been sufficient. If their plans are set then I don’t see why it would take longer than a couple of days to explain it .

It took them less than 24 hours to reverse the Xbox Live price increase

Well done! I'm wondering how long they'll allow this to drag out. You've got insiders now backing off and vanishing, so I wonder if the news forthcoming isn't as capable of "the spin" as they hoped it would be.

Who you got for the SB? I think KC will win, but I want SF to win.
I have money on KC but like you I would prefer SF to win

I think the Taylor Swift effect is too strong #scripted ;)

Nowadays there is very little to difference between hardware of both manufacturers. As long as one console still exists, it doesn't make much difference in the end for gamers.
When consoles are gone and we are limited to streaming 🤮🤮, then gaming will be dead to me.

I think it's ridiculous. He's always been ridiculous. He fired nastily back at me during the ABK saga, but when they went through and laid off 2000 people he wants to act regretful?

Back on topic...it's going to be interesting. We don't really know anything, aside from nothing has been outright denied and whoever that Discord leaker was has been pretty spot-on.

They've gotta do this right, but I still feel there will be irreparable damage, both from the length that this drags out and WHAT they bring over.

I still maintain if they bring Halo, even if if is Infinite, that's kinda it. No real way to sugarcoat that.

Xbox has sold around 200mil console man.

Orig Xbox - 26mil
360 -84mil (MS stopped giving numbers in 2014 so who knows what it actually sold in the end)
XB1 - 60mil (that was the last estimate we had not long ago)
Series around 24+mil (according to that thread we just had about 77mil next gen consoles being in the wild)

Xbox isnat as popular as Nintendo or Playstation, but to say Xbox was always a unwanted console, and always been a poor seller, well thsts just nonsense my man.
For clarity, the X1 sold 58 million and OG sold 24 million.

Regardless, he's on the right track but used the wrong verbiage. The 360 was an exception and that era left a false impression that it was an equal to the global presence of PlayStation. 50-60 mill is about the best it would ever do and the Series consoles are sure to fall flat of that latter number. Of course, it is what it is and not everything is a Nintendo or a PlayStation, so to its credit, Xbox made a niche name for itself.

Same. It's ridiculous.

It was hundreds of millions if I remember correctly.
My wife and I were walking around Miami a couple of weeks ago and saw a young girl wearing a Swift KC jersey

The NFL and those networks airing those games she is at know exactly what they are doing

My man is seriously just up and leavin'? The news must be more than Hi-Fi and Sea of Thieves.
He just doesn't want to be bothered on Super Bowl Sunday ;)

The fact that we are expecting the two Series consoles combined to sell significantly less LIFETIME than the Xbox One that was considered a monumental failure, it's simply unreal....

Sold my Xbox last year as well. Just far too much redundancy between Xbox and PC, imo.
I kept it for the sake of limited edition. But I am not a collector really. I just buy the limited version because it's worth more and desirable more when I resell the system ( as long as I pay through msrp price)

But I have no reason really to keep it when PC has the exact same games but better.

The 360 backward was the only reason and even that they stopped the program. So whatever

Will be funny how quickly he does a 180 if in fact Xbox doubles down on their commitment to making hardware and keeping games exclusive even if its timed.

But maybe he knows something all of us don't know, maybe Phil did send him a PM and give him advanced warning so Timothy the canine can start farming PS blue bloods clicks

I think it is hilarious how he flipped the switch from Xbox warrior to PlayStation warrior. But yeah, he'll switch back in a heartbeat. There ain't anyone on the Sony side who is going to pretend like he is important like Microsoft does.

Did you get a good return on that collector's edition?

I'm gonna laugh if this is business development is mostly good news... porting hi-fi rush and sea of thieves to PS5/Switch but otherwise lay out the road map for the next xbox consoles, finally fully bring out gamepass family plan, announce some more smaller acquisitions maybe? Everyone is expecting phil to get fired, gamepass cancelled, xbox going full third party, and death of hardware and brand.

I don't really scalp. I put it for the same price I paid for it with tax( maybe abit more than what i paid for by 40$ just to leave room for the peoppe that like to haggle.. I remember paying close to 900$ or 850$ Canadian so I put it for that price.
Didn't last 3 days. It was sold.
