Isn't the 'story' just the novel Journey to the West? I'm not sure how much of it it depicts though and how much people are filling in the gaps knowing it's that story.

In all seriousness though, Wukong was a great game and I'm not surprised to see it take stop spot.

And damn... people just love the monkey boss rush souls. Never played it. Don't know if I will as I am soulslike, boss rush burnt out currently. Glad to see Eastern Devs stepping up.

But I respect any list that isn't a small group of out of touch assholes dictating their personal biases and it being implied to be the industry consensus. You can be cynnical as fuck and imply it's all bots, but it's pretty fucking difficult to manipulate en mass. Even if it is that the Chinese consumer base stepped up and represented, they loved the game and did it. It's the will of the audience and I am for it.

I only wish Steam would have a separate entire GOTY series of lists for specifically Indies. Those awards would go a long way to bring eyes on some up and coming studios.

yeah that surprised me, while GoW:R is a great game I voted for Hades II because it’s an amazing game on the Deck

I"m surprised at Ragnarok being the top Steam Deck. Actually I wouldn't be surprised if most of the people that voted for don't even have a Deck. It runs like shit. Same for the other finalist, Rogue Trader.

Doesn't matter because people just vote for recognized names to get their stickers or whatever but GoW:R as "best game on deck" is laughable. The only time it's on the deck top played list is "past week" and even then it's well below the first GoW game. Meanwhile Balatro, Deep Rock Galactic and Hades 2 are on all lists and placed higher.

The story, as someone pointed out, is a sequel to the Journey to the West Novel. However, if you aren't familiar with the story in the game, you cannot make heads or tails of it. Furthermore, the Old Monkey who narrates the beginning is an unreliable narrator, making the plot even more confusing. If you do know what the hell is going on, the story is quite interesting. Again though, it's seeped in Chinese culture, history, and religion, so for westerners, it just seems confusing and nonsensical.

8 major patches and 29 hotfixes at an almost monthly pace since release. They have another new major patch planned for 2025 with 12 entire new subclasses, animations, abilities and so on
