I recently had a Resident Evil renaissance of sorts.. after loving all the Remakes - after playing 4 I had to go for 5 which I've never played beyond some demo that I hated.
I ended up loving RE5 and think it's pretty much Majora's Mask of Resident Evil. Skipping a lot of details, of course I went on to try Resident Evil 6. Wtf is that .... I could not believe what I was playing. I tried it for a little over an hour and just turned it off. I'm soooo glad they dropped all that nonsense and went closer to something the series is with Resident Evil VII. But why in the world are we getting the seemingly awful RE6 before 5? November 5th, 2024 was all the go-ahead Capcom should have needed to go ahead.
Yes RE5 is good. I don't like the setting but its absolutely not as bad as I once thought. Its worse than RE4, which isn't really all that surprising. But the gameplay is legit good, if you can accept tank controls. The shooting, the hit reactions, the sound etc is all on point. Knee capping a zombie, and then uppercut never gets old. It just feels perfect. Best mercs in the franchise too. And its still active online. Last year I managed to find a good random player and we beat Desperate Escape on Professional. This was an awesome as fuck experience.
RE6, well, I went the extra mile and beat the remainder of what I had open (mostly the last 2 chapters of each) except for the 4th campaign which 1) sucks and 2) wasn't even directly unlocked in the vanilla release. Its shit, but you can do a lot of movements. Dive, roll, duck, cover, run and shoot, run and punch, quick shot, counter attacks... Its clunky but it does work, you can quick shot, slide into enemy and then coup de grace. It feels good when it connects.
And there isn't even that much action gameplay, its much less than I remembered. Half the campaigns are cutscenes, rail running scenes and QTE scenes. Jake kind of shot up in my ranks, its by far the shortest with approx 45 mins per chapter w/o skipping scenes. The final boss isn't a nuisance either, hes as straightforward as they come. Sherry is a pretty cool character, wasted on this worst RE. Its funny, but I realized but in the Remaster you can directly choose the final stage of any chapter you open up. So you can pretty much skip 80% of the entire game if you desire so. Probably do only the final boss stage on the highest difficulty for trophy whoring.
