My guess is that she knew she would get torched no matter what. If Barbara put out a strong white male, the twitter shrillers would screech and caw about "oh noes, ANOTHER white male bond!!!!!" but if she allowed anything OTHER than a white male Bond then the audience wouldn't show up. So rather than stress about this for another couple of years and deal with the Amazon marketers, she just gave a number and amazon met it, buying her out creatively but allowing her some $$$ as the franchise continues on.

She is 65, Wilson is over 80, maybe their kids aren't as interested, time to cash out. Wouldn't surprise me if there are some "must make content every XXX years" in there or the rights revert back to the kids, so Amazon has to produce or lose it. Maybe they think they can cash in now, invest, and then get it back cheap if Amazon bungles it.

I'm actually curious if Amazon will survive Bezos or get chopped up. Most of the massive tech companies are still riding on the impulses of their initial founders, we'll see if Apple, for example, can innovate again or get dustbinned when smartphones make a leap they can't capitalize on. I feel like amazon is reliant on a lot of international shipping and trade that could rip it up if the global community stops being so nice to each other, or if the EU and US govs stop letting them be massive multi-pronged conglomerates and force them to break up.

I'd like to see Jon Faverau do one as well, so long as he tones down the CG stuff. Peter Berg as well, get that gritty feel. Fair number of accomplished action directors with a sense of technical flair that would work for Bond. They need to stay away from the artsy directors, for sure.

More than anything, I don't want it set in current day. 50s/60s was prime bond timeline. Modern day spoils too much of the mystique and appeal of Bond. Cell phones, geolocation, drones, etc would take away any agency for Bond or reason for him to exist at all.

I have zero faith in Amazon studios making anything good though, not sure why I'm even wasting my time typing this out.

So true. Nothing kills my excitement in a bond film more than him handing a flash drive to some pencil necked geek who then bangs on a keyboard for 5 minutes until bond gets the next bread crumb to follow.

I will say that the last act of Skyfall was pretty great, once he left all that behind and was isolated at the house.

To be fair that's basically all Bond has EVER been. They were rapidly thrown together stunt spectaculars that were super popular in an era where that type of film was a rarity due to the stunts.

Now we have CG shit everywhere so a real human death defying stunt is "ho hum" so the exotic locales and big set pieces are no longer novel. There are 'better' Bond films now, like the M:I series, that have borrowed so many of the successful aspects that a true Bond film feels derivative.

Now some would say the way to go is to mix up Bond, hence the call for a PoC or woman. But that doesn't address ANYTHING, as it would (presumably) just be a different face dealing with the same structural issues and tropes. What I think we need are more consistent Bond releases so we can have the "tense thriller" and the "big action" and even a "gadget filled semi-comedy" but since they come out every 2-3 years you can experiment more with the formula while still having the trappings the core audience wants. I can pick a Connery, Brosnan, or Moore bond film to fit my mood because they cover a wide range(ish) of tones and themes. Not so much for Craig, IMHO, and Dalton/Lazenby didn't get enough. Use the change of actor to 'reset' the audience's appetite and then hit them with sequential films for a 4-6 film spread, then pause for a bit and reset again. Rather than put all your Bond eggs into 1 250 million dollar basket every 5-6 years, strive for a 150mill film every 2-3 years because it SHOULDN'T cost so much to make a spy thriller IMHO.

They aren’t great films by any means but they also aren’t all “woke” like people are assuming. Either are all of their TV shows. I mean they have Nolan’s brother making stuff.

And you had the same thought as me.. they may save the girlboss stuff for a streaming series, but mainline Bond films will continue to be… Bond films.

That’s what makes the most sense to me.
