Army of Two: The 40th Day The Official Thread

Completed this last night. Enjoyed the last missions actually. Though the ending... I'm confused at what really happened? Anyone care to elaborate?

wow, this thread isn't going anywhere, huh? I just fired up Army of Two 1 and really like it so far. My backlog is up to like 10 games, so I'll hold off on 40th Day til like the end of the year where I can get it for near nothing. I think a lot of people are in the same boat, glad to see you guys like it though

Yeah no one is posting on this thread. Sorta sad because the game is such an improvement over the first game, its ridiculous. The aiming problems people complained about from the demo seemed to be due to the net code, though the final game seemed fine in this regard. The story in 40th day is more of a "Get the hell out of dodge story" I mean they came to do a mission, got caught in a invasion basically, and time to get out. Simple but effective.

I will be replaying this title and as a co-op game, definetly loved it. Granted I just love co-op games in general. Still 40th day had me saying whoa a few times! :D

Finished it last night and, like Left 4 Dead, and I wouldn't recommend playing it without a friend. The bot AI is just fine if you take each area slowly -- basically ordering him to stay in cover wherever he is and only expose himself when you've cleared out the majority of the enemy. With a buddy the flanking necessary is just way easier to pull off.

I really liked the weapon customization and once the big head mode is unlocked, it's like a hyper-violent version of NHL Hitz 2003. (It's the tiger-striped gun skin that tips it.)

And some of those set pieces are pretty awesome.

So what did you do in the ending?
if you killed the bad guy, what was up with them just leaving and tons of helicopters coming in?
I was confused.

Yeah, I killed Jonah. The fact the achievement for finishing the game -- Survivor? -- includes a question mark, it's left ambiguous. With the
white flash before the credits start rolling it makes me think the bomb actually does go off. Jonah's entire speech at the ending about "holding the trigger" or something... I call bullshit on that because it doesn't look like he's holding the trigger (the big read button, I'm assuming)
I haven't restarted the game so I'm going to re-try the last checkpoint to see if the ending is any different if I make "the sacrifice."

Well it might have been
a grip trigger and if he just left go of it, it goes off. Though it just seems the two guys were left hanging and that was that. I definetly need to watch the ending again and also see the other endinds as well.

Played through the game with my buddy in two days. First game in a long time that has held my attention for hours at a time (aside from multiplayer sessions with a full room of buddies).

The storyline was incomprehensible **** - they were obviously pushing a theme of the mercenary mindset vs. sacrificing for others, but when you dont even get a hint of the big baddie's motivation until the last scene of the ****ing game, it loses any kind of weight and comes off as completely hackneyed. The level layouts were sometimes needlessly confusing too, but that was a minor irritation.

Aside from that, loved it. The co-op mechanics felt alot less tacked on this time. Instead of coming to a point in the position where you use a specific ability, you were free to use whatever abilities you want throughout (save the back-to-back which is still rigid). The tactics felt natural, the set-pieces were suitably frenetic and forced communication. The morality choices werent particularly interesting to me, but the 'save the civilian' spots were GREAT. Loved solving those little puzzles.

Not sure Im gonna bother with multiplayer outside of extraction mode, but Im definitely going back in for Contractor difficulty, to get all the collectibles, and to make all the 'good' decisions (obviously I was an ***hole my first way through).

I'm playing splitscreen coop with my brother. Framerate is nice and stable. Overall I like this game more then the first. The trophy list is terrible though.

just finished the campaign on contractor difficulty and i have to say Ao2:4oth Day was just simply all out fun and non stop action, loved every minute of it. its definitely already the sleeper hit of 2010, i was not expecting the quality to be leaps above the first :D

Some Gaffers should post the final impressions after they completed the game to get this thread going, Also im taking the best funny remark to add with the thread title, any takers?

i will be doing the same but im out for the night, will post my final thoughts soon

Finished it. 7/10. It's a little better then the first.

Still No story.
Same length as original.
Shooting feels better.
Shanghai was a better setting.
Weapon customization is purely cosmetic and adds nothing to the game.
The game can be cheap at times.
Fans of trophies aren't gonna be having a fun time. Multiple playthroughs and grinding.

I can't seem to find a non-laggy game (PS3 version). Everything is coming up either 1 red bar (or something only marginally better).

Did one coop campaign match, it had a lot of "waiting for player" pauses and controls felt sluggish. I wound up capping two hostages in one game when I was trying to aim for their captors :lol

I think I am going to pick this up this weekend. I have gotten my fill of Borderlands and it is time for it to go.

Dude I haven't been able to play a game online since Tuesday. I just sit in the lobby waiting for someone to join. I finally gave up and started a solo game.

Are you into multiplayer cause the game is barely 5 hours.

contractor difficulty on solo alone took me 8 and half hours the game is pretty lengthy if you ask me, also there is no
challenge on normal mode add in Extraction and multiple SP playthroughs you have yourself a winner :lol

Nice to hear. For me, Borderlands had the exact opposite problem. That game was too freaking long and too much of doing the exact same thing. I am going to pick up Army of Two today.

I was having fun with this game with a buddy untill.... the game froze in chapter three during exiting the shopping/customization menu. All my friend's progress gone (not mine, strange enough). Couple of hours down the drain. Ugh.

I'm having a pretty good time with the early part of the game. Controls are a little cumbersome and stiff, but I'm getting used to them. The moral choices are somewhat interesting. But I admit, I laughed when I shouldn't have.
In the second mission when you choose whether to take the ammunition or not, I literally could not stop laughing when I opted to take the ammo and the cop blew his own head off

this is sad... no one on gaf has gave this game a chance, its a shame there is alot of fun to be had

Yeah its a damn shame. I'm actually playing the first game again because I never completed it and you know what, its got funny dialog and bits, but its not that much funnier then the second one. So I think alot of people complaining saying it went to serious need to replay the first again. Memory is not serving these folks right.

Also the first game has some cool varied locations, but aside from the air carrier end sequences, the set peices in two imo blow the first games out of the water. Though I'm still enjoying the first game alot replaying it now.

I did, but my friend didn't, so I think I lost out on the most significant portion of the game. Bummer. I liked what I played, but it's obviously meant to be played with another human player.

Ive finally started playing it after Darskiders and while Darksiders was a disapointment for me at the end (loved it at the start) this really has made me smile.

I liked the first one but it had very clunky aiming and the AI was pap and towards the end the story and areas where pretty shite. This just seems to have improved every area and no longer has those weird man love moments while killling people.

I myself was put off buying the sequel but it reminds me more of a Gears of War contender now than a poor clone.

First, I'm one of the few that enjoyed Army of Two playing through co-op.

Now having said that, 40th day has improved in every possible way. This weekend a friend and I played split screen and we had A LOT of fun. It's worth at least a rental if you have a friend to enjoy it with.

Glad to see more people posting now! I know with the mix of all these great games coming out people will pass on 40th day, but anyone that enjoyed the first game, or fans of co-op games need to check this game out in some way. Its just a guilty pleasure of a game.

Doubt I'll ever play this as it doesn't really seem like my kind of game and I doubt I'd have someone to play co-op with, but the commercial is pretty cool. :lol

split screen co-op is alot of fun but the vertical split screen did get annoying, hopefully they will patch in a horizontal option, you can force horizontal but putting your display settings to 4:9 and that does the trick but you miss out on the higher resolution image

glad some ppl are giving it a chance

here some of the things there working on

Online Disconnects and/or Lag
Fixing disconnects when playing the campaign online is a big priority for us. We are working on fixing the issue, and once we have a fix nailed down and tested we’ll work on deploying a patch. We are also looking into the lag issues that you may be experiencing in versus play.

Masks Not Working in Multiplayer Games
This is also a priority for us. We are looking for more information so that we can troubleshoot the issues. If you are no longer able to get your custom masks working in multiplayer please respond to this thread with the following information:

1) When did you first start seeing this issue?
2) Did you see this issue every time you play the game?
3) Did your masks appear correctly in the game before?
4) Does this issue occur only in versus mode or both in the campaign and versus modes?
5) Do your masks show up properly in the menus when selecting them?

UPDATE: Extraction Relocking

We are aware that for some people Extraction appears to be re-locking after you have already entered your code. A fix will be up on our servers very soon to fix this.

Alternatively, if your Extraction code did not work the first time you used it, please make sure that you are entering it exactly as shown (in all-caps). You can contact EA Support if you cannot get it working.

Update (Jan 19th): This issue should now be resolved.

Inverted Y/X Axis
If you inverted your Y/X aiming axis in the control options, but it did not change in-game please reply to this thread. We haven’t been able to reproduce this problem so are looking for additional information so that we can resolve it.

1) What are the steps that you are taking to invert the axis (please be as specific as possible)?
2) Which platform (PS3/X360) are you playing on?
3) How are you launching the game?
4) Anything else that could be relevant.

Subtitles

We currently don’t have plans to add subtitles to the game, however we are looking into an audio issue that is making it difficult to hear the dialogue in-game.

Xbox 360/PS3 Freezing
If your console is freezing while you play the game please reply to this thread. We haven’t experienced similar problems, so are looking for more information. Please reply with the following information:

1) What type of game are you playing (multiplayer or campaign)?
2) What is going on in the game when it freezes?
3) What are the events leading up in the game before it freezes?
4) Does it happen at the same spot every time?

AS-KR1 / Grand Pinger Relocking
We are aware of a bug with this whereby if you unlock the weapons and quit the game before reaching a checkpoint they will not be saved. We are working on a fix.

Custom Soundtracks (PS3)
We are currently investigating custom soundtracks on the PS3.

Mask & Armor Creator Gallery
We are currently working on resolving the “No Designs Found” issue with the Custom Mask & Armor Creator gallery. There are now more than 100,000 masks designs (in under a week!), which has caused very heavy loads on our servers. None of your existing designs are gone, but you may not be able to view them temporarily. We’re actively working to fix this.

Played this with my dudebro in Chicago this weekend. Had to drive down and see him in person (despite this Internet thing I hear of), and I praise the split-screen gods for facilitating our brodeosity. Seriously, though, the split-screen is partitioned really well. I like it.

That said, we had a fairly similar experience to when we spent a Saturday two years ago playing through the first one. Lots of problems, which lead to some fun, but not a good game.

The plot, firstly, is a mess. I appreciate hot messes so long as they provide a good setting and a good time
loved the zoo level
. But whereas the first game had some potential with its merc plot, this one rested on convoluted Bible metaphors and shallow societal critique that didn't come together until an arbitrary bad guy explanation in the end.

Storywise, I did enjoy the off-the-wall craziness of the "morality choices," especially loving the
tiger stops bank robber and *hurray* I finally got to (indirectly) kill an annoying kid in a video game
.

The gameplay simply has a ton of problems. For one, melee with the riot shield doesn't work, and I feel like this bug exemplifies the "coulda shoulda woulda" attitude of the whole game. It's just a step below the polish of something like Gears of War (which it was obviously channeling moreso than in the original). A full step. Hit detection, both on the player and the enemy, is weak. I know lots of people don't like the "filling the screen with blood mechanic," but I think it works well when it's as clear about your health as it is in a Call of Duty game. That wasn't the case here.

Which brings me to the major problem - the weapon purchasing/upgrade system. When you go into the menu screen to do this, you could spend maybe 10 minutes polishing your loadout. HOWEVER, when you get back into the game, if you don't make it to the next checkpoint... NOTHING SAVES. You have to go back in and do it all again and just hope that you don't die until you get to the next checkpoint, and how are you supposed to know when that is? Me and my bro would get to a tough part, die, decide to upgrade our weapons, go back in, die again, and be reset back to our original weapons. What the hell. Even doing this at the beginning of a chapter doesn't work, because, again, nothing saves until a checkpoint.

This needs to be fixed immediately if I am ever to recommend this game as even a passing fancy. Which I may, at some point, but I can't do that now.

well then. Cant kill the first gattling gun guy on contractor. playing by myself though. Anyone want to help?-360

Awful game. First things first: I actually liked the first game. It passed 6 hours of my weekend when it came out, and I enjoyed it. I had high hopes for this one, but it's fucking dreadful. The shooting feels off, the plot is just ghastly, the graphics seem to have taken a step back, the personality - even as hateful as it was - has been drained out and replaced with (bless him) Nolan North...

Just unpleasant. I returned it to the shop for a refund, something I haven't done with a game in years.

playing online multiplayer was really not pleasent, i love the ingame brower its a absolute great idea to find good games, but the downside is 99% of the rooms are all red bars and the lag becomes unbearable

if their were a create match option (public) it would have worked wonders with the ingame server brower, just to make things a little easier finding local games instead of luckily grabbing host when the host decides to leave.

oh yeah, if you dont work as a team prepared to get thoroughly pwned

The lack of horizontal split screen kills this game for me. The way the characters are justified to one side just doesn't work with vertical split screen. It's sad because even with all the problems the first game had it was still a lot of fun to playing local co-op.

Anyone else played the game co-op on PS3 and notice the lack of voice chat? Decent game for rent, but that specific lack of online functionality is bush league my friend. Wish my brother had a 360 like me...

Just popped it in for like 45 mins of so. Fun, but I liked the weapons better in the first one. And I liked the "look" of the first one better. But We'll see. It is no boardlands but it's keeping me busy until Mass Effect 2 shows up

it may just be me but this game is awful.Picked it up luckily I rented it as I originally planned to buy it.Playing Co-op with a friend and first of all no option for horizontal splitscreen which is stupid and cuts so much off couldn't tell half the shit that was shooting us.

We rented this on PS3 and we have already packed it in tonight as the game crashed outright. The visuals are garbage and look like complete ass the fucking camera work in the cutscenes is completly laughable . The original game which was great tops this in every way.I'm so dissapointed and pissed right now after playing this it has put me in a bad mood now.I feel bad for anyone who actually paid full price for this

There should be a law against not having subtitles. I mean for fucks sake the dialog was written down some where, it's not like they had to sit though the game any try and figure out what was being said over the really loud SFX/music. Which is exactly what I'm trying to do.

Started playing this last night on 360. I enjoyed the first one, but I don't know, this one isn't grabbing me much. I'm not a fan of the new engine, and why do all the sounds come off like you're wearing earmuffs??

So far the only improvement I'm seeing are the new co-op moves you can do with your partner (fake surrender, etc..)

Got some niggles with offline co-op: hopefully I'm just missing something. Can you guys confirm.

1. Does not remember player 2s (even though my bro signs in) progress just mine. So everytime we come back to it I have bad ass weapons, he has stock, with no money.

2. I was thinking if I could just swap guns (I remember doing this in the 1st game), then buying another with the rest of my money.

If all else fails, is there an unlimited money cheat so he can rebuy shit he's lost? It's ruining his experience.

Did anybody DL the new DLC?

I played through the campaign already, going to play through again to finish off the achievements, and am interested in playing through the new stuff. Give me a shout if you're interested.
