As great as steam is, it really is lacking some extremely basic features.

Like notifications for owned games. It's honestly baffling, they have all those useful notifications for your wishlist, but if you buy the game, it's all gone. Want to know when the game game you already bought leaves early access? Or just releases? Well too bad, if you wanted those notifications you shouldn't have bought the game and just left it in your wishlist. It's like you're being punished for spending money. Also notifications for DLC's are non existent, i obviously dont want to get spammed with notifications of dlc releasing for all the games i have, but being able to go to a game in your library and being able to click on something that enables that stuff would be great.

I just bought doom and clair obscure and it's not a big deal with those games, i'll know when they release but i also thought might as well just buy split fiction already which im gonna play with my sister, but that's a game i'm likely to forget, in fact i had forgotten about it, if i didnt check my wishlist to see if i wanted to buy anything else that's releasing soonish. Kinda regret having bought it solely because of that. I wouldn't have missed it on release day if it was on my wishlist, but now i just might. I probably wont because i even made a thread about this so it was long enough in my mind now to not forget, but under normal circumstances i probably would.

Dude those notifications are there, just at the top of your Library page.

Not only that, tinto con Casera is one of the best things you can drink in a hot summer evening.

The only basic feature missing was observational skills I guess.
Tell me what a feed has in common with the notifications you get for your wishlisted games except for absolutely nothing

This isn't how notifications work.
Thanks.

One thing is you not have to worry about it because steam will remind you, another thing is to go manually check. Who even opens steam that frequently? Lets say a game releases today and i dont open a steam window for like 3 days? oops, it's gone, or you can scroll but then again you're actively looking constantly. And i go weeks without opening steam, i open my games through the steam icon in the tray. I only open steam when i need to go to buy a game or play a game i havent played in a long time that doesnt show up in the tray.

You get a whatsapp message and your phone doesnt tell you, but you can open whatsapp and you'll see there anyone who wrote to you? According to gaf that's some top tier notification system.

Ok….so you would like features added to notifications? That’s fair. Is that it?
I just want to be able to get the same notifications as your wishlist. Except the ones that dont matter anymore. Like you have the game, you dont need to be notified that the game is on sale. But the game releasing? It would be nice to get an email telling you that just like you would if the game was on your wishlist

You can see updates to your games in multiple ways on Steam lol.

First on log-in you get a seperate pop-up box that displays big content updates for games.
Then, at the top of your library, there is a feed that displays new updates of any kind, no matter how small (especially if you "follow" games).
Further, you can check your activity feed where you get a facebook-style feed through all game updates (including friend stuff).
AND EVEN MORE you can click on individual games in your library to instantly see all latest updates for a particular game.

I mean... you're being kind of anal no?

You go and follow the individual games news page.

/edit this is the same as following it on the store page btw. Just noticed that. You should get e-mails for that if you have them enabled.

Are you talking about the '1 of your wishlisted games is on sale' emails? Because that is the only update I get for wishlisted games I think.
So you want an expanded email notification system? Because within steam they do a good job of keeping you updated on your games.

does not send you notifications, just goes to the feed
I could be wrong, but I distinctly remember following games and having them send a toast notification when they'd post a new update. Maybe things have changed in recent years though.

I am aware i can manually check. I dont want to, especially since it's a feature when it's on your wishlist but no longer is when you buy the game.

You'd be okay with your phone not sending you notifications for messages or emails because you can always open those apps to see? Exactly. That's not how notifications work

It may be "fair" but the type of "noisy" notifications he's basically asking for sound like a complete nightmare for anyone who (like me) has hundreds of games in his library.
I have more than 1500 titles on Steam alone. If I had to be get a BEEP and "notification" for each time any one of those got any sort of update it would drive me crazy.

I can look at the feed on the top of the library, I can look at the game's page if I'm curious about what's going on with one title in particular and from time to time if you didn't disable them you can also get emails remembering you what's on sale, what's out of Early Access, what got a new DLC or significant update, etc, etc.

It's more than enough, frankly.
Anything more would be exhausting.

I hate how the store is only in the center of the screen and there are massive blank spaces on each side. Never did get this.

Notifications for dlc should obviously be opt in instead of opt out but tbh i dont care about those that much. I mainly want them for when a game releases. Just give me the same notifications that the wishlist has which you seem to be okay with. Without the on sale notifications because those dont do anything for you anymore because you already bought the game.

It makes zero sense to me that you can wishlist an early access game and get an email when it releases but you can no longer get that email if you bought the game.

I get it, but your thread title made it out like you had some list of issues. This isn't really all that much.

Either way, you should be posting this on the Steam "Suggestion/Ideas".

That's basic UI design. You put all the content in the middle so the user doesn't have to move their eyes from left to right all the time. Makes reading more comfortable.

It's the same reason as to why so many games have the textbox not occupy the whole width of the screen:

Valve should create a dedicated, lightweight Steam OS that’s installable on any PC, stripping out all the extra background tasks and bloat you get with Windows. That way, players could boot straight into Steam and enjoy a clean, performance-focused gaming experience without any distractions.

Can we all send this idea over to Valve together please? K thx bye

Op does not want to open steam 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is an imperfect complaint but the sentiment is still valid. Steam has had no reason to make any UX improvements...ever. They've had no one come in and push them so far in the content department that they had to compete in basic user experience. Steam is black hole, when it comes to accessibility, for example.

I've never pre-ordered a game in my life but I can sort of see how that would be useful for people who do. But why would you be so interested as to pre-order and then not care enough to be anticipating the release date.

Idk why this is such a foreign concept to you. I dont want to open stema just to check whats up.

Just like you dont want to open your messaging app on your phone to see if someone messaged you. No, you want your phone to tell you hey this person messaged you now.

Yet they do it anyway. I remember thinking Big Picture was a total waste of effort when I used to game only at a desk with mouse and keyboard - now it is a godsend and I can't live without it.

Why not just use a reminder on your phone? Hey Siri/Google set a reminder to check out game XXX on XXX date.

One example is early access games. They're cheaper during early access so if there is one i know i'll want to play when it comes out i sometimes buy it while it's cheaper. And then sometimes yoi forget because it was months ago and there are so many games.

Only thing I'd like to see is an opt-in notification, and maybe this already exists, but for early release > full release. It's on the library feed and in the game page, but I've got hundreds of games and am not always on Steam. V Rising for example I was busy with work and personal life. When I did play games, I was only playing D4 and finishing a 2nd Elden Ring playthrough in prep for Erdtree. If it weren't for seeing the news on GAF of going 1.0, I would have missed it entirely. I don't actually use the "follow" feature, so maybe that notifies?
