Astro Bot is TGA's Game of The Year 2024

Astro Bot received those high scores partly due to the massive fan service aimed at PlayStation fans. Behind it was a carefully crafted game design specifically tailored to appeal in that direction. Super Mario games, on the other hand, stand in a league of their own.

I liked the game and even pre-ordered it.

But this being game of the year is... not great.

Astro's Playroom was more complete and had more creative and challenging game play.

ANY Mario game from the last 15 years is better than it too.

This is more a condemnation of the state of AAA than praise of Astro.

A bit of a shocker for GOTY, I thought, but he really gave an outstanding speech when receiving the award.

Honestly, even if the announcements weren’t all at the top of my list, it really felt like a lot of LOVE went into the Game Awards this year. Really good show.

I was watching Doucet's victory speech and I couldn't help but laugh at this moment:

That one blue-haired dude(?) with a covid mask sticking out like a sore thumb. :pie_roffles:

Is that Shu with his hands up on the right side of the pic? If so, shout-out to Shu.

And props to Doucet for thanking Nintendo for inspiring Astro in his speech, very classy move.

Gamedesign won

Yes. Simplicity, honesty, and the pure fun of playing won. No hidden messages, no politics, no grandiosity behind the "game."

This is very good for the industry, and although I don’t think it will happen, I hope it sparks a change among developers who are more concerned with showcasing themselves than with what gaming truly represents: fun.

Grifters like asmongold are really salty about this huh?
Of course he is, the game is not some PCMR "Rated M for Mature™" and "adult" game, it's an innocent fun game that push all of the nostalgic buttons with its references for people who experieced said moments back in their young gaming days, hell, you have people here saying the game can't win because "kiddy demo"

I don’t care about covid but I’ll still wear a mask once in a blue moon if I’m a little under the weather but still able to walk around. The reduced, warmer airflow makes stuff like sore throats hurt less in my esperience. More common in Asian countries I think.

don't totally agree but I'll allow it.

I liked Astro Bot a lot but I'd give it like, an 8/10. I liked the Playroom nostalgia more because it was all hardware. By the end of AB I was a bit bummed out, like look at waht they took from us. We haven't gotten a real Ridge Racer or WipeOut since when, 2006?

LOL at the conspiracies that "Sony paid for it", as if it winning was some huge upset.
It's literally the highest reviewed game of the year on Metacritic... you know the site that adds together all the reviews from the same mainstream gaming sites that vote for TGA winners.

People only claim shit is "paid for" when their personal favorite wasn't selected. That's the definition of being salty.

I would love to see the vote numbers for curiosity. I thought all if China voted Wukong?

TGA has a panel of "experts" who choose the winners - insiders, journalists, whoever (their names haven't been disclosed). They determine who wins the GOTY awards. The vote isn't open to the public.

I think TGA has a separate poll for gamer's choice, where everyone can vote. But that's just a poll, and no one really cares about the result, because it doesn't determine who wins the award.

You're saying this like it's a negative. "Oh no, a game carefully crafted to perfection so that it appeals to its intended fanbase". I sure hope the developers don't get away with this.

i havent seen this much hate for a GOTY ever, social media is going insane over this winning. Im happy GAF supports its win, gaming needs games that are fun, we can't have only Nintendo creating them.
Really? I don't check the messages but overall people agree on it. Sure, you can't please everyone but seeing they win it in front of so many, let's say important, people together with the message from the Larian guy sends a positive but very important message.
