It's like procedural generation. An open world that's entirely procedurally generated will probably suck, but from my understanding a lot of open world games still use procedural generation tools to help create their world, because having devs waste time individually placing every tree, bush, hill or bump on the road would be a waste of time. They use procedural generation to create a base on which their environmental designers/artists get to work on.

I see AI similarly. Can and will it be abused? absolutely. But I also see a lot of potential in it as a tool when used correctly.

Because making games will be faster and easier, meaning many more people can try to do it at lower cost.

This will displace many AAA workers, sure, but it will also mean more creators overall, smaller teams, lower budgets, and therefore more risks taken and more originality.

There will be AI slop of course, but consider, say the explosion of rock music when recording on a 4-track became affordable and quick. Or the explosion of short form sketches with the advent of smartphones.

Every time tech speeds things up, you get cataclysmic change - some good, some bad. But there's zero doubt in my mind that we will have MANY more creators, MANY more games, and MUCH more risk-taking.

I'm sure Black_Stride has reasons, but I can think of many that tempted me to be part of it:

• I've been on GAF for ages. Pre-ERA. Pre "gamer gate". And then I went dark for years, because life made me choose other priorities. When I came back, GAF had split into 2 communities. Most of my buddies from back then are only on ERA now. A lot of them not retarded. I used to play online with them. Now I miss them, even though I'm not interested in online gaming anymore. Some people are on it to just to maintain continuity.
• Most gaming media and devs are on Era now. Used to to be fun interacting with them once in a while on GAF. It was exciting when Geoff Keighley or Paul Rustchynsky would respond to you out of the blue or you could call out a top exec at Sony or MS and they would actually respond. None of that happens here on GAF anymore. We still have some stars, but the sky ain't so bright
• Sometimes it's actually fun to argue with people who have gone completely cuckoo
• They seem to generate way more traffic and activity. So if you steer clear of the politics, there are still more potential people to interact with
• But none of the above matter to me if moderation is so idiotic and censorship is so absolute. I simply refuse to comply like that. I'd rather enjoy my freedom here than the tyranny there. But others may simply have different priorities. At the very least, we should respect that and not jump to conclusions or ad hominem attacks.

Yep. Most of these people here act like they’re artists themselves taking umbrage over “quality issues” they’d otherwise never know unless told. Nobody gives a shit if some artist spent 1 month 3D modeling and sculpting an asset if they did it in half the time or less AI assisted.

The cope is real with people acting like they’re going to notice the difference. The quality of AI generated material isn’t just underwhelming amateur level you’d find on fanfic forums.
