Could sony release the PS6 for less than the PS5 pro?

I believe they will have two SKUs... with the only difference being the size of the SSD.

Both will not come with a disc drive, and one will be priced at $599 (1TB) and the other at $699 (2TB). The disc drive will be priced at $100.

For whatever reason, the $599 SKU will be very very hard to find.

Yes, the base PS6 will be cheaper than the Pro. Think of it this way. My iPhone 16 Pro Max retails for $1200. The base version of the next iPhone (iPhone 17) will be less than that. Yes, I know they priced the PS4 Pro for the same price as the base PS4, but I think that's an anomaly and not the standard practice.

No because they need legroom to charge more for the ps6 pro.
So the PS5 has taught you nothing?
Nah. they've already proved that a lot of folk are willing to shell out a ridiculous amount for the Pro. Watch them rip the absolute piss outta folk with the PS6 price.
That wasn't even them... that was Nvidia and every smartphone manufacturer. They have just followed the trend and tested it out with the PS5pro.

Can we really blame them though? When the same-sized chip on newer nodes costs as much as 3 times as much, how can we expect prices to remain the same?

And why does nobody mention Xbox One X, which cost $200 more than Xbox One S?

Why 2Tb?

1Tb is enough.
That's up for debate. Clearly it wasn't, as the Pro offers more.

It's also a console not launching in 2024. Would you buy a next gen console (which is sure to have even bigger games) that only offered 825GB in 2027-8?

My guess is they'll slide the PS6 in at the PS5 Pro price. And $80 games. Should be a great time....
My slightly bold take is that next gen would be the first time when digital and physical releases are priced differently. With physical being more expensive, and more frequently not even coming out at the same time.

I would double down on that and say physical releases will pretty much mostly only consist of limited/collector editions. Justifying their higher prices.
With or without the incoming Trump tarrifs on electronics?
Not if it's released in 2029.

There are only two options:
- "Cheap" PS6 at $599 but with a very small power jump = everyone complaining.
- "Expensive" PS6 at $699 or more but with an acceptable power jump = everyone complaining.

They have a hard time getting it right...TSMC will have to improve manufacturing a lot by 2028 to be able to have a balance.

599 no drisc drive and either not compatible with the current disc drive or the disc drive will have the same "avaibiliy" as today or a sudden price increase of >50%. PS fans should be grateful Microsoft is going for one more gen, otherwise Sony wouldn't use lubricant.

$700 in US it's $800-850 Europe, and in special lucky countries $900. And yes, that's without taking into account the drive. If you can explain to me how you want to create a player base on the next-gen start at such prices, I'll be happy to listen =)

Ask Sony, they are charging ridiculous prices for pro outside of us.

Pro is more expensive to make than PS5, and PS6 will be even more expensive than that in 2027/8 if they want to have sizeable power jump.

Yes! I've never ever filled my 1Tb storage up yet!

no.
it's 2024 and inflation is a thing. 700$ is just fine
Apparently you don't think the mass market matters for gaming. FFS they clearly marketed the Pro as an enthusiast model. What they should do is launch with 2 SKUs and give people the pro option from the get go. Make it 1k or something and idiots like me who only play exclusives will buy that and let it collect dust 11 out of 12 months.

PRO has no goal to create a user base on the market, this console is entering a ready market that was created by PS5 and its base, essentially doing all the work for PRO. That's why people who can't wait until PS6 will buy it, it will get its 30% of the total number of PS5 and that will be the end of it. Now imagine a situation where there is no PS5 and they released PS5 PRO at this price, what do you think the reaction will be? =)

Yeah, I don't think Playstation is in any rush to put out the PS6. The PS5 generation will be viable with practically every game probably until at least 2033. Especially, when you have Sony and Microsoft developing handhelds in the next few years. And developers will want to put all their games on handheld devices. And if a game can play on a handheld, it damn well can play on PS5/Xbox Series

Phil Spencer came out a few days ago and mentioned how 1000$ devices are terrible for the console market. That's probably what it would cost if Microsoft or Sony released a "next-gen" console in the next few years. The gaming industry is at a technical bottle neck

Okay, fair point, but what's the excuse for the seperate disc drive and stand?

One trip to the grocery store costs me $500. If my console is that much in 2026 and beyond it must be a PoS6. Get with the times, console gamers. 😁

700$ will basically be mass market price in 4 years .
Iphones are yearly 1000$ for years and it's most popular device in the world ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Depends on what price the next Xbox will come in at. I think Pro was designed with a large enough margin that Sony can comfortably drop the price before next gen and still make money in clearance mode. $699 is probably your standard starting price for consoles going forward.

It's literally obvious that PS6 will cost less, and MUCH less. It will be in the same ballpark of PS5. They are aimed to different targets and PS5 base is for mass market.

But no more subsidies. I could see the Series S model being $599 and there being an $899 model at launch. Both without a drive.

With the Series S model being basically a PS5 Pro with a much better CPU.

Yes, but it will be $600 instead. It's due to the economies of scale. Sony will buy a lot more components for their next main system. The PRO is not going to be a 100 million seller and so they would have bought less at a higher cost.

Yes, of course. PS5 Pro is designed for enthusiast market and they are making a nice profit on each unit sold. PS6 will be a mass-market product designed for normies, they will sell it at a lost in order to collect the PSN store cut and subscription fees.

Of course they can and will. They themselves referred to the pro as a premium product for enthusiasts. It’s not for everyone. They wouldn’t build another one that high for the general public.

I expect we won’t see if for 4 years though

Sure they can but why should they ?, people are seemingly okay with the current pricetag, so you can bet on it that they will milk you dry with a tiny more expensive product the next time, as long as people are buying and sony's quarterly reports go up so will the price.

Yes, next year the PS5 PRO is going to drop to 599 with disk drive and 549 digital only and 449 and 399 for the PS5 Slim to try to compete with the Switch 2 at 459 and 399. So 549 and 599 for the PS6. 🔮

I think new consoles will stick around the £500 mark. £699 is just not approachable for a lot of the casual market I imagine. Mid gen upgrades are targeting enthusiasts, not the majority of the market.
