Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
One and done, oof.

Hate to see people lose jobs but that UD remake was kind of trash.

I thought the speculation was that they were gonna make a sequel after the new ending to the UD remake.

Shame about the layoffs but this isn't very surprising.
They were founded 6 years ago and in that time their only game is a Remake of Until Dawn that some people argue is a worse way to experience the game than the original 2015 release.

Yeah, I don't want to wave away people getting laid off but they released a single let down of a game in 6 years. From a business standpoint it's not surprising in the slightest.

They probably pitched the remake so they could fund a new game. And that's the result of the funding.

Literally the first few words in the OP. Lol

The game was fine after all the patches. Launch was a dumpster fire though. No way Sony was giving a popular IP to a noname studio for a sequel. They were hungry for a project and got thrown a bone with a superfluous remake since the leads had a history with Until Dawn. It just seems like they couldn't secure funding to keep the boat afloat after that. And Sony must have cut them loose after gauging public reception

They probably pitched the remake to Sony, lol.
No, when Sony greenlit the movie (Jan 2024) , SONY then got a studio to remaster/remake the game (Jan 2024)

"In January of 2024, Sony announced that it would be porting Until Dawn to PC and PS5 and tasked UK studio Ballistic Moon with this job. In May of 2024, Sony officially revealed the Until Dawn remake during the State of Play."

I believe some past rumors floating around mentioned Firesprite might be working on UD2

You seriously believe that Sony announced the remake as soon as it started development? You seriously believe that it was made in 7 months?

I'm also sure they had plans well before then for the movie as well.......both were done hand in hand.

Just like how they were working on a Twisted Metal game at the same time as they were making the TV show.

Because it was made in just 7 months, right...

2024 Remake
The remake has been in development since, at the very least, summer 2021. We have internal PS Studios documents that confirm just that. Plus, when develepment footage of the remake started to leak in the spring of last year, the gameplay clips of the game running in the Unreal editor were dated "February 2022", and so on.

Pretty sure that's with a different developer doing the rumoured sequel
That's with Firesprite right now. The next game BM was a multiplayer title, but they couldn't get funding or a publisher to foot the bill. The UD remake was the only thing keeping the lights on over there. We heard about the first round of layoffs months before the game even launched. The writing was on the wall that this is where they were headed.

They deserved to be closed! They did a HORRIBLE job on UD remake.

Another casualty of Sony.

Not sure why they figured an Until Dawn remake was a good idea.

Sony is getting almost as bad as EA and Activision at this point.
Nothing to do with Sony.

Sony hired them for a game (Until Dawn remake), which is now released. The contract is over.

Ballistic Moon failed to secure funding or a publisher for their next project. It's mentioned in the article.

The original game was built on an early version of Decima. Porting the original to the newest iteration of that engine would have been more than enough - Guerilla and KJP have expanded it so much in the last decade. Instead, a full rebuild in UE5?
