It's good that this guy is no longer employed by Insomniac. Infact he should never be employed in the industry again. Private meetings regarding IP's should never be made public, it's totally unprofessional and unacceptable. Problem with this people who find problems everywhere is they never have any solution, and solution proposed by others are usually wrong. They create problems but they are unable to solve problems. They usually force people to solve problems they create.
I imagine 100 years of Disney's animators to find ways to create different characters using few traits, then this guy arrives and say "It's wrong, it's a fox!“. I just want him to do the same for my right to express my views. I'm a huge advocate of freedom of speech. People can talk about him because this forum agrees with the need for a free exchange of ideas. You also have the freedom to ignore this thread or him. What are the game director and art director realistically supposed to do in a situation like this?
Ratchet is a 2002 character and so his initial designs were limited by the PS2 technology.
His PS3, PS4 and now PS5 designs are kind of bound by that initial design.
So he is kind of set in stone.
The decision is made that the new PS5 game should have, in addition to Ratchet, a brand new "female" lombax.
From a design perspective where can you really go with this?
She's a lombax like Ratchet but she's supposed to be "female" OK.
There's not a right or wrong way to do things but is it really all that shocking that a design team being told to design a female version of a male character that is essentially some weird anthropomorphic space Pokemon would come to the conclusion that she should be "female looking"?
Look at this furry anthropomorphic male character. Now design a female version. What the hell are you doing!? Hips!? Breasts!? Just what do you think "female" is!?
Can you imagine actually having to deal with this guy in a work environment?

I would listen to him and give him the respect I give every colleague.

Every response from a woman I've seen to him on twitter has been positive, I haven't seen one negative one yet so 90% is probably not high enough lol. I appreciate the passion in standing your ground on creative matters, but this guy sounds like he overstepped majorly. I'm not surprised he "left"; generally having a huge row with the creative leads on a project is futile and non-constructive. They will either be persuaded, or they won't. Because its their show, so your input is more of a courtesy than a right.
Making this public after the fact is all about ego, the big problem it reveals is not that this character is willing to throw former colleagues under the bus, but that you cannot trust him to be a good collaborator. Who'd hire someone like that ?

I mean, his thesis is that designing a female character to have a stereotypically female body contributes to a hostile and harmful working environment. Which I could understand maybe if the character designs were lewd or suggestive.
The problem with designing an anthropomorphic character that is supposed to be a "female" is that you kind of are stuck basing the designs on humans anyway. I'm not sure how the issue of hips and breasts can really be avoided.
What if the design instruction had been that instead of female Rivet was to be Irish or Old or something else. Wouldn't it just be the same case that the designer would look for quick ways to get that across to the audience.
I can kind of imagine some designer in the future getting their instructions that the character should be female but also not have any trace of femininity. Don't give them a female voice. No hips. No breasts.
Hilariously, I think you could take it so far that the "female" character design just ends up being a stereotypical male.

It must be hard for the creative industry in particular to come up with something in the current world. Thankfully I am not from a rage-everything is offensive culture like the US but I remember a conversation I have with a close relative I didn’t see for a long time and man was part of that conversation very awkward because you had to explain just to be sure or not be misunderstood.
It only shows the world has a long way to go to create a equal society where girls/womans/people aren't judged based on their gender. That you are not willing to take responsibility, even having a civilised discussion about it is proof enough. You need to be able to talk about these things regardless of how you feel about it or think what the world looks like.

Wow! NICE TITS!I have not played the game so I can not speak for all of them but one of the suits have slight differences between the Lombaxes.
Rivet's suit has a wider (to take her hips into account) and thinner "belt" and a smaller codpiece.

That's a pretty big contradiction.
Hilariously, the character ends up having an obvious feminine voice.
So design a female character without using any stereotypically feminine traits because that's "harmful".
Oh and if she is a lilac color and has a stereotypically feminine voice and mannerisms then that's totally 100% fine.
