Many people on this board and by extension people in this thread love Disney. Zootopia was #4 in last year's movie of the year vote. So this point is moot. People can appreciate all kinds of movies and see past their intended audience to discern their quality.

Yeah, I like Disney too. Disney movies usually sneak subtle jokes for adults in there and are generally just really good. But this movie seems to be a kids movie. Not all animated movies are kids movies, but this specific film defintely is, as evidenced by all the hate it's recieving.

Like when the emoji movie was announced if you went "finally! This is exactly what I have been asking and waiting for." Then I guess you could be dissapointed. I just don't see the point of being so bitter and angry about a movie, even if it's bad, even if you don't like it because some people will. So let the people who like it, like it and move on with your life. It's a movie, not an important issue. If people want to be angry there are plenty of real things to be angry about. Who cares about the emoji movie?

I would much rather seen a horror movie about android emojis. In which the blobs try to survive getting replaced by Google only to learn the dark secret that their entire world is built on the corpses of yesteryears emojis. Near the end they think they are saved but in reality they became a museum exhibit in the Allo's Sticker Gallery.

It's just a little weird to me how much people are shitting on this movie. The movie isn't for you, and it never was going to be for you. And that's ok. It is a silly little kids movie which I am sure will bring joy to many little kids. Kids don't care at all about review scores or what critics think. The only appropriate response to this movie should be "eh, this is a kids movie and therefore not for me." And then you move on with your life.

Are people upset that Sony had the gall to make a movie that wasn't targeted at them? Well, the universe doesn't revolve around you. Like why are people so sad and bitter? I just want to hug these people and tell them "everything will be ok, it's just a movie. Wait, did the director hurt you? No? Then why are you so upset about a movie existing!"

Kids deserve better than shit like this. Being aimed at children doesn't excuse creatively bankrupt and exploitative garbage.

"Knowing audiences will acknowledge the film's commentaries on class warfare and racial barriers (is it a total coincidence, for example, that the emoji of defecation, brown in color, is mocked and surrounded by a community that's largely anything but?). And as the journey through one phone's app screen jumps swiftly from Spotify to Instagram, Twitter to Dropbox, it tells without words a narrative of digital indulgence that might hit the millennials in the cinema just a little too close to the Home button."

Passive aggressive shitting on people who shit on a shit movie(made even worse by the fact it is for children) seems like a waste of time, even by my not particular high standards.

I'm looking forward to the Greek version. I hear it's much beta, although this news means it's been delta blow; it could be a lambda the slaughter. Still, if it's even one iota as good as it could be, and audiences give it alpha chance, some people will be left eating humble pi.

How come it's for the kids? Kids aren't even old enough to have phones to even be familiar with emojis! lol

Why does this excuse get trotted out all the time? Why do we assume kids are braindead with their taste in movies? Why not show them better movies? Some of you honestly think movies are just babysitting tools to use on kids so it doesn't matter how bad the film is. Why do you assume kids would love this movie? Have kids given out their Cinemascore cards? Have your kids gone to see it and absolutely love it?

Sounds like you're the only person here shitting on others. No one has gone insulting others like you have done.

So if a film is being hated on, it's correlated to how kid-targeted a film is? That correlation is just junk.

Because it's a movie and not an important issue, it should be bereft of criticism? That doesn't make sense. So people should never be angry at movies, only real important political issues? Why are you so dictatorial on how and what people should have emotions about? If you don't care about the movie, then why are you here? Why do you care of how people react to a movie? I don't see the point of you being so condescending. Maybe follow your own advice: "So let the people who hate it, hate it and move on with your life."

Edit: I'm seeing this on Sunday with my daughter, pray for me.[/QUOTE]
Look, I'm not trying to tell you how to parent, but if it was my daughter I would never take her to this movie. Is she really that dead set on seeing it?

This is lazy and disingenuous. Being "a kids movie" doesn't excuse it from critique. "Kids" movies can and have been amazing.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
What's the budget of this movie?

According to Wikipedia, $50 million
This doesn't factor in the marketing.
They probably already made money through the excessive brand deals

Midnight's Edge on Popeye and the Emoji movie.

Saw it earlier.
I know the movie didn't really kill Popeye (the same way that the Problem Solverz didn't really kill Sym-Bionic Titan). But it's definitely a case of "product over art". One is a tribute to a classic character by a great director, the other is the essence of cynical branding.

Kids need great experiences and top quality product, this's a soulless, lazy effort, based mostly and marketing.

Well good for them, I guess. But at 50 million budget I don't think that would be true. It will probably get there after initial run though.

So what's the next "this movie will save us" for Sony?

This comment screams 'out of touch', little kids are absolutely familiar with emojis. And while most kids nowadays do have phones, you don't NEED a phone to be familiar with emojis either.

This is the film you're going to make this stance for?

The emoji movie?

Plenty of great children's movies, if people want to have fun making fun of this one, let them. It looked like poo.

And it has poo.

As someone who enjoyed a ton of movies as a kid and didn't realise how badly they were received (how the fuck does Hook only have 40% RT?) I'm sure this movie will go down well with a lot of kids.

What was the last successful movie by Sony Pictures Animation?

Oh my god this... this is wonderful

I dunno, kids watch a lot of YouTube and might run into the same opinions that we do. I know my 10-year-old brother thinks this movie looked horrible.

It varies with age though. My 7-year-old sister probably doesn't care.

Sony should of pulled their asses out of the Movie business game a long time ago. I hope this will help to push them over the edge to ax the movie division once in for all.

Man I loved the Guardian review of this. Kind of makes me wish Ebert were around to savage it.

Children should not be allowed to watch The Emoji Movie. Their impressionable brains simply aren't set up to sift through the thick haze of corporate subterfuge clouding every scene of this sponsored-content post masquerading as a feature film. Adults know enough to snort derisively when, say, an anthropomorphic high-five drops a reference to popular smartphone game Just Dance Now (available for purchase in the App Store, kids!), but young children especially are more innocent and more vulnerable.

...the most disturbing part of this toxic film is the way it infects audiences with its ugly cynicism. A viewer leaves The Emoji Movie a colder person, not only angry at the film for being unconscionably bad, but resentful of it for making them feel angry. A critic can accept the truth that art and commerce will spend eternity locked in opposition. Nevertheless it's still startling to see art that cheers commerce on while being stamped in the face by its boots.

There are few things I hate more when talking about movies than people dismissing poor quality films because they are "for kids". Kids deserve smart, fun movies! A bad kids movie is WORSE than a regular bad movie!

You never hear someone say "Yeah, this food is disgusting and bad for you. But that's OK, because it's for kids!" Give kids good food and movies!

Also, relating the "it's just a kids movie" argument - i found the Roger Ebert quote i was thinking of:

Kids are not stupid. They are among the sharpest, cleverest, most eagle-eyed creatures on God's Earth, and very little escapes their notice... They don't miss a thing, and they have an instinctive contempt for shoddy and shabby work. I make this observation because nine out of ten children's movies are stupid, witless, and display contempt for their audiences, and that's why kids hate them. Is that all parents want from kids' movies? That they not have anything bad in them? Shouldn't they have something good in them — some life, imagination, fantasy, inventiveness, something to tickle the imagination?

Look, I'm not trying to tell you how to parent, but if it was my daughter I would never take her to this movie. Is she really that dead set on seeing it?

Oh yes. She wants to see it precisely BECAUSE she knows it's going to be bad. She wants to go the emptiest theater we can find so she can make fun of it. It's going to be painful, but as a lifelong MST3K fan, I'm kinda proud of her.

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
A kids movie getting such a low RT score is a pretty amazing accomplishment. Usually you can find at least a couple reviewers who will give it a hand wave cause it's for children. I guess there is so much quality entertainment out there for kids these days, why settle?

There are plenty of great kids movies so that excuse doesn't really fly. Especially when parents take their kids to the movies.

Actually, they did that

the filmmakers saw fit to have a character sing, ‘Nobody knows the touch screens I’ve seen / Nobody knows the screenshots,’ while sitting atop a pile of trash, to the tune of ‘Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen,’ a spiritual written by slaves to bolster their spirits while toiling in the pre-Emancipation American South.”

Its just a really tasteless joke

The vast majority of "adult jokes" in kids movies are just references and not really jokes at all, like the one cited above.
