GAF, would you help me redesigning my gaming habits?

Hi GAF.

I just got a Steam Deck OLED and I'm absolutely loving it. I found a confortable, powerful enough system with the cheapest offer of games in the market. And that got me thinking in going back to PC gaming... I always been a console gamer, but I really enjoyed playing in PC in my first twenty years of gaming. I stopped gaming in PC when hardware started to have stupid prices and, mostly, when I definitely switched to Mac (been with Mac for twenty years and I don't see myself using a Windows machine at home anytime soon).

So, I currently have these platforms:

  • Switch
  • PlayStation 5
  • Series X (gone)
  • Deck
  • 10+ years PC
  • Mac

I just don't have time for all of them and I think is an absolute waste of money maintaining four platforms, so I'm getting ride of at least one of them.

I use Mac, so it doesn't makes sense to me to buy a PC just for gaming. On the other hand, I'm enjoying the Deck (and Steam) so much that I think I'm missing something and I would love playing the games in a big screen. How would the Deck handle 4K (with upscaling, obviously) for 5-10 years old games?

Xbox. A friend is giving me 280€ for the Series X. I'm 99% decided on selling it as I already have the Deck for all my indie needs and we all know all the exclusives will come sooner or later to PS5. I don't care about Game Pass.

Switch. Keeping it only for the kids so technically this is the other platform I'm getting rid of. I know I will pre-order the Switch 2 the moment it's announced, but...

PlayStation. Undoubtedly mi main platform. Exclusives, trophies and PSVR2 makes it a must for me.

With all of this in mind, I think I'm focusing in PS5 and Deck. What do you think? Is it really worth it expending two thousand in a PC if you already have a Deck and a PS5? Have any of you gone trough this feeling of having too many platforms?

Edit: Xbox is gone.

PS5 + some kind of PC will generally have you covered.

I actually think PC + Deck + PS5 is the ultimate combo. You only need to maintain a library on 2 platforms and it gives you access to 99% of games out there, and it includes a portable solution for both your PC games (natively) and PS5 games (via Chiaki). If you have to decide between the deck and a full on gaming PC then I'd say go for the deck only but that depends on your use case and what types of games you play.

If you can also throw in a Switch then you're golden but there is a lot of crossover between that and the deck, even the games (but we won't talk about that).

Unless you have fairly exotic needs, like serious flight or racing simulation and the associated controllers and monitors, I would say no.

i would install chiaki4deck get that ps5 crisp image with hdr on the steamdeck so you can play AAA games from the big screen to couch anytime you want.
Keep ps5 as your main AAA platform since you like the ecosystem but indies and less demanding or older games buy it on steam or gog for the deck.
Invest in pc gaming when the time is right.

I'm mostly PC/Deck with some PS5 on the rare occasion there's a game that I actually want to play on it. I also have a Switch which is a Zelda/Mario machine.

I find that Steam Deck is a great way of working through my backlog as I can pick it up and put it down. The only time I'll play desktop is where it isn't supported by Deck.

Like you and most others, time is limited and having all these devices is really just a bit of a waste if you can't actually use them.

PC-PS5-Deck is my current go to and what I'd reccomend. All basis covered. Xbox games are on PC. So are (cough) Switch (cough)

Series X can go, Switch and PS5 are maybes.

Mac is good for nothing in gaming unless it’s via the cloud, but you’ve a Steam Deck now that will do it better

You know, I often tell people that enthusiasts don't keep multiple platforms so they can play every game, but so they can play any game.

The only thing it looks like I'd change in your position would be to nix the subscriptions on the xbox. Keep everything else. It'll all age out eventually.

PS5 is my primary vidya machine, PC is for the stuff that is optimal on PC like strategy games, Switch is for Nintendo stuff. I’m happy with this. I actually had a Deck but I found that I would rather just use my desktop at home and it was too big to take on say a plane. I also had a Mac I got rid of, although I still have an iPhone. I doubt I’ll get another one.

There’s absolutely no need to own a Xbox anymore. It’s something people talked about when MS moved to put everything on PC day one, and the years since have proven it.

Edit: I also have a Meta Quest 3. But that is a specialized device.

I actually tried Deus Ex Human Revolution at 4k.
Actually not bad, 29 - 40 FPS range. Could probably get away with a 30fps cap
Knocking it down to 1440p was mostly 60, few minor dips.
Only tried it briefly and it's one game but there you go.

Series X sold almost three months ago, no regrets at all.

I've been playing with my Deck (LOVING IT) every day since then, haven't touched the PS5. I feel scammed by Sony with the PSVR2 and the only game I know I will miss (that is not yet / will be available on PC) is GT7. So, if they announce a GT7 PC port, I will sell my PS5 and I will be a PC (mostly Deck) gamer, again.

I know I will buy the next Nintendo day one, so my future as a gamer is shaping like PC + Switch 2. Not bad at all.

I can’t help but feel I’ve missed the window of opportunity on the Deck Oled. If I buy one now it’s likely a successor will be announced within the next 18 months and I’ll feel obliged to upgrade, making the £479 a sunk cost.

I really want one but I’m happy to just wait for the Switch 2 first and then hopefully the Deck 2 a little later on. Seems like the dream combo to be honest.

Some friends tell me that I bought the Deck OLED too late for the same reasons, but I can tell you that it is, without any doubt, the hardware I have enjoyed the most in the past few years.

Is there any "official" thread for PC configurations? I'm choosing the components for a new PC and I have some doubts...

You use all that, I bet you don't even multiplayer, I suggest to build a Rig for emulators specifically and don't worry about messing with Nintendo or any other company, just buy your copy and let those mf say whatever they want, it's your copy therefore you decide where to play your games, not them.

Old thread but recently had same conversation with myself. So I’ve gone with MAC with GeForce now for some of the games I can’t get on console. It’s good enough for all but the twitchiest fps games for me. Also had game pass and Ubisoft titles so I spend less buying than subscribing so I save money. Kept Ps5 cause it’s the best console with the best game I wanna play without headache of drivers and patches breaking things it’s just plug and play. And Switch. Steam deck is just for moving around the house and playing indie types and slower paced games.

Ps5
Switch for the exclusives
Deck

You can have a gamepass sub and use XBPlay to stream those games to your deck if you really want something that’s on gamepass.

Don't forget you can sign up to geforce now and stream most games to your mac if you wanted and you'd own them across steam geforce now stead deck etc as it hooks into your steam library.

  1. Keep all of them, but put the ones you intend to not use anymore in their boxes and store them away
  2. I'd rethink the part where you're sure you're never gonna build a PC "just for gaming" and the part where you're absolutely sure you don't want to live without Playstation
  3. You don't need 2K for a decent gaming rig, especially if you use SteamOS (or similar distros) and the features they bring (basically the same as a Deck, just stationary and with much more power)
Basically put the consoles away and build a "console" PC. Deck + Steam machine will serve you nicely.

PS5 + PSVR2 gone.

I might come back to the PS family with PS6 (but Sony needs to change many things for me to come back). For now, I'm only gaming in PC and Switch (and Switch 2 eventually).
Good choice. Pc + Switch 2 (+Quest 3) is the combination.

I bought a Deck Oled not long after this exchange and it’s fantastic. I have no regrets. I’ve used it mainly to play none competitive online multiplayer games. My most played game has been Sea of Thieves.

Glad you managed to refine your habits.

The Switch and Deck combo gives me access to everything I want.

I don't understand that. Does the game I buy/rent in GeForce appear in my Steam library?

PC is the ultimate backwards compatible device. It can play almost every console game up until the ps4 era, and can play bloodborne.

You also have an amazing library that is tenet to hundreds of times the size of any other console. Much of it is shovels are, but there are more classic gems than you will ever be able to play in to lifetime. 1k will let you play every modern game at 1440p, 800 will get you a 1080p beast. If you don’t care about modern (last 2 years tops is what I mean by modern stuff) as much, which is imho overrated, you can go even cheaper.

There are entire genres that work best on pc, such as rts. I don’t enjoy FPS games on controllers because keyboard and mouse feels so much better to me. For genres that don’t work best on a kb/ mouse setup, you use a controller. Any controller for any of your modern consoles will work on pc with minimum effort.

You also have access to mods and rom hacks, such as Pokémon polished crystal or the myriad of Skyrim overhauls, or even DOOM.

There are some good console exclusives, but in my opinion exclusives are the only reason to own a console. That’s just my opinion and I’m CERTAIN others will differ. I stopped being too into consoles during the ps3 360 era, when consoles started to homogenize rather than having a unique identity outside of corporate marketing bullshit.

Just my two cents, take it or leave it.
